nicobn··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2021)
Tuned | Remote (Worldwide) | Software Engineer and Software Reliability Engineer (AWS/Rust/Java/Kotlin/React/Flutter) | Full-time | http://www.tuned.com

Tuned is a cloud-based algorithmic trading platform that gives anyone the ability to build and grow a quantitative trading business. Using Tuned, traders have access to real-time market data and high-powered testing capabilities to help them build winning trading strategies and then get paid for sharing trading signals with their communities. We launched in July 2020 and in this time Tuned traders have facilitated over $1b in transaction volume. After raising our first major round of funding, we’re looking to grow our team with software engineers interested in building complex and scalable systems that democratize access to financial markets and enable the creation and protection of wealth.

You’ll join me on a team with experience working at companies big and small, spread across 7 timezones, with a shared interest in cryptocurrencies, fintech, and trading communities.

nicobn··on Ask HN: Remote workers in a non-tech city, what's your experience?
I've been working remotely on/off for the past decade and vastly prefer it to commuting to an office. It has afforded me the opportunity to live in a corner of the world that I truly love: a quiet and remote 20+ acres property in rural Colorado.

In my experience, the key is to work for a company that is remote-first (or even remote-only), because it will be structured accordingly. I've never worked on a team that's partially remote - I can imagine that could cause friction and a certain degree of alienation.

I would also add that there is definitely an advantage to being on-premises and in a tech hub for an engineer that is at the beginning of their career: easier access to mentoring and learning opportunities, creating a professional network, meeting friends, etc.. It's a tradeoff.

nicobn··on Kubernetes Failure Stories
I've actually seen your hypothetical in action, but the bug was even more subtle. Assume service A, B and C. A and C both need information from each other which is usually cached. Normally, you'd deploy one service at a time so the call chain would go A -> B -> C -> A or A -> C then A -> B -> C but in this particular instance, A and C's caches were cold, causing an explosion of service calls that took both services down.
nicobn··on Ask HN: Why do tutorial writers combine 10 technologies when 1 or 2 would do?
Teaching is a skill and like any other skill, it needs practice. I have immense respect for teachers who have dedicated their lives to perfecting their craft.
nicobn··on SiriusXM buys Pandora for $3.5 billion
Howard Stern makes a risk-free $80M/year for 4 hours of radio 3 days a week. Maybe he could make that much making podcasts, but why risk it ? He's at the tail-end of his career anyway.

Do you know a lot of "smart" people who would trade a guaranteed $80M/year for possibly more doing podcasts ?

nicobn··on Distributed architecture concepts I learned when building a large payment system
You're being downvoted - maybe because of your tone - but I partially share your sentiment. A good counterexample to "overdistribution", not without its own set of problems, is the LMAX architecture.

nicobn··on Psychiatrists Can’t Stop Mass Killers
A car attack killed 6 and wounded 30 in Melbourne in January of this year.

Granted, attacks are much rarer in Australia. Part of this is attributable to the population difference: all things proportional, you'd expect 13 attacks in the US for 1 in Australia if the rate is the same between the two countries.

nicobn··on Psychiatrists Can’t Stop Mass Killers
You seem very sure of yourself. I'm going to be generous and attribute your confident demeanor to a lack of imagination.
nicobn··on Psychiatrists Can’t Stop Mass Killers
What he's saying is that your cure might be worse than the disease.

Nobody knows what the effects of mass-confiscation would have on American society, but the range of possibility includes civil war and massive unrest. Most people would surrender their firearms peacefully but there's a strong minority that would not do so peacefully.

nicobn··on Psychiatrists Can’t Stop Mass Killers
In areas with strict gun control but access to a black market, mass killings still happen with firearms (see the November 2015 attacks in Paris or the 2017 Quebec City Mosque Attacks).

In areas with strict gun control but limited access to firearms, mass killings still happen with other modalities. A lot of things can effectively kill a bunch of human beings assembled in a restricted area: knives, machetes, bombs, trucks, etc..

The idea that restricting one modality of mass killing will prevent all mass killings is misguided. Would it reduce the frequency or the lethality ? That's debatable. Someone who has decided to pursue mass killing as systematically as the Las Vegas shooter will simply find another weapon to kill en masse.

nicobn··on Percentage of Young Americans Living with Parents Rises to 75-Year High
I think you're doing the right thing. The first step towards financial independence is building a reasonable emergency fund. The peace of mind is liberating.
nicobn··on Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf Steps Down
So, your solution is to liquidate a bank that controls 2 T$, employs 265,000 persons and has over 200 B$ in shareholder value? Don't get me wrong, this fraud affected a lot of people but ultimately liquidating the whole thing will have a negative effect multiple orders of magnitude greater.

I'm curious; where in rural Arizona are you based off ?

Genuinely curious here. Can you point me to some of these strengthening exercises ?
nicobn··on 1 in 5 Seafood Samples Is Fake, Report Finds
It certainly does matter.

In terms of texture and taste, white tuna may very well be indistinguishable from escolar for a lot of people. It's still much less desirable than white tuna. Japan has banned escolar in 1977, deeming it toxic.

nicobn··on Insomnia 3.0 – A simple and beautiful REST API client
A comment like this is precisely why I come to HN. This product looks amazing.
nicobn··on How Fake Money Saved Brazil (2010)
I don't mean to nitpick but your explanation is missing a critical detail. The chain of command for operational purposes (military operations) completely bypasses the Joints Chiefs of Staff and goes directly to the Unified Combatant Commands. By design, there is no military leader that has operational control over more than a fraction of US forces at a time, which further improves civilian control over the military.

The JCS have a very important role but their control is mostly administrative (doctrine, assignments, equipment, promotions, etc.).

nicobn··on Why We Moved from Amazon Web Services to Google Cloud Platform
You're not insane!
nicobn··on Why We Moved from Amazon Web Services to Google Cloud Platform
Don't get me wrong, I love AWS. I use ~15 products almost everyday. I actually like how powerful IAM is.

But yeah, CloudFormation just sucks. It does. It's painful because it's a really good idea but the configuration format is inadequate for the task.

CF should have been implemented using a declarative DSL similar to Puppet from the start. I've been tinkering with the idea of creating a DSL with a JSON translation layer but I always assumed AWS would eventually move away from JSON anyway, making the effort futile. Four years later and still no improvements. Definitely my biggest disappointment with their platform.

nicobn··on Hacker News' “Who is Hiring?” thread, part 2, remote and locations
Not always. A friend of mine works remotely for a financial institution. His manager wanted to revoke his work from home agreement because he wanted to hit a target metric of number of man-days worked in a physical office to justify a corner office with upper management. Sad but true.
nicobn··on Peter Thiel, Tech Billionaire, Reveals Secret War with Gawker
Freedom of speech does not imply freedom of consequences from speech.
nicobn··on What Makes Texas Texas
Liberals as a whole are easy people to sell to. They have a fundamental revulsion to status quo, regardless of how positive it is, and their ears will perk up whenever they hear a point of view which matches their own prejudices. California, therefore, is an easy sell to Californians who tend to skew liberal. Just spend a few days in the state and listen to television and radio ads. They don't say "California." They say "Cali."
nicobn··on Twitter open-sources a high-performance replicated log service
Blanket statements like "Cassandra doesn't work" and "Hadoop is a complete waste of hosts for most companies" are unproductive and contribute nothing, unless you can back them with data and real world examples.

So, what data do you base these assertions on ? Also, not to burst your bubble but a lot of businesses (if not the majority) run Spark on YARN. And Spark is built on the JVM.

nicobn··on Twitter open-sources a high-performance replicated log service
For better or for worse, Java runs a big chunk of this world. Not running a Java application because "ewww Java is gross" will prevent you from enjoying some of the most exciting database technologies out there.
nicobn··on Differences Between the CLR and the JVM
The point that was made is that multiple (static) classes cannot be declared in the same file, which is 100% false. I'm not arguing that C# is functionally equivalent to Java. There was no mention of "compilation unit" or "partial classes", which are a completely different subject.

It doesn't matter whether the additional classes defined in the file are top level or not, they're still classes that can be used independently.

nicobn··on Differences Between the CLR and the JVM
There's nothing stopping you from declaring additional static classes inside a class in Java. You can definitely declare multiple classes in a single file.
