niclupien··on Becoming a high performing software developer working from your bedroom
I'm single dad with 3 young kids and I would never change from working from home. After leaving the kids at daycare in the morning, I come home and quickly clean up the house. I do stuff like meal prep and laundry in pauses during the day. I spend quality time with my kids in the evening instead of doing chores. When they go to bed, I can relax, read a book and workout. I don't know how I would do any of this with 1-2 hours of commute.

In term of productivity, I'm more productive at home without the distraction of a workplace. I don't have any special setup. Just a laptop really. Not even headphones. I have a nice office space setup in my basement with a whiteboard and an extra monitor but I rarely use it. I'm more often working from the kitchen or living room.

I still love going to the workplace (or another place) from time to time. There's no substitute to interacting with people in real life.

niclupien··on How to make a friend fast
I use Materialistic HN reader for Android and I just turn on readability.
niclupien··on A crashed advertisement reveals logs of a facial recognition system
Wait, why do you know the post codes of the places you shop?
niclupien··on Ask HN: Have you ever thought of leaving programming for something else?
First time I quit programming, burned out, went working on a friend's farm. After some times, I felt much more valuable helping them with computers/website/payment processing problems. Didn't took long, I was back in programming.

Second time, I took some time to execute on a non profit to help our local community. Being good with data really help organizing event people really liked so I tried to spin that into a startup and failed. Like other commenters said, I was doing stuff I didn't really like.

I'm back to programming but I'm really glad I tried different things. Not everything was a failure, I eat fresh organic food from my friend's farm and I have an impact on my local community.

niclupien··on Ghost in the Shell remains our most challenging film about technology
I find anything cyberpunk very good "near-future" literature. Currently reading "Ready Player One" (Ernest Cline) and watching Caprica which are both about AIs and VR. Seeing much VR (ex: HoloLens) on HN frontpage lately adds to the fun of it. If it's your kind of stuff, you can try this list from GoodReads https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/487.Best_of_Cyberpunk
niclupien··on Chrome Cleanup Tool
Interesting, I understood something completely different. I thought it would detect and remove malware installed on the user's computer that affect chrome behavior.
niclupien··on MRI Scans of a person's brain
My friends did this http://www.artofthebrain.com They sell brain art but they can also produce one with custom data from MRI.
niclupien··on Atlas by Hashicorp
Atlas as a project name seems very popular these days (Facebook Atlas API, o'Reilly Atlas platform, etc).
niclupien··on Ask HN: What domain registration and DNS service do you use?
Yes they do, when I purchase a domain they give a SSL cert for 2$ for 1 year. That's kind of a no brainer for me.
niclupien··on Ask HN: What domain registration and DNS service do you use?
Namecheap works well. They have an API but I never used it.
niclupien··on Network Solutions Auto-Enroll: $1,850
A while ago I've read on a paypal presentation on ecommerce that the expiration date isnt use for verification and can be completely false. I'm curious if this information was true and is still valid.
niclupien··on Java Virtual Machine in pure Node.js
It's exactly what I thought whem I saw this.
niclupien··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
It's excellent! I'm so going to use this site. Is there a way to see the lyrics at the same time ?
niclupien··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2013)
same here
niclupien··on Web hosting, but good
I've been using WebFaction for more than 5 years and I've probably deployed more than 200 web apps on their servers. I am very satisfied by their performance and support.
niclupien··on Ask HN: Why you do open source?
I do open source because I don't care of making money I just want to hack on something, pass the time, have fun.
niclupien··on Amazon turns Cloud Drive into a Dropbox rival with file syncing
I stopped reading at "Java security flaws are well-known"
niclupien··on Dear HN "Who's Hiring" responders
I've applied to many positions (internships) advertised in these threads with a lot of effort to craft each email for each of them. I don't speak english so often so it took me a very great amount of effort to do this. Got only 1 reply, the others didn't even bother saying "Thanks for applying" or anything.

I don't know if this behavior is normal but I would expect a bit more from hirers advertising on HN. Especially when they ask for very specific things that I know I got on my CV.

niclupien··on The 3-year old "Implement RSS natively in Chrome" bug just changed to "WontFix"
With which private technology are they trying to switch to ? I believe they are dropping RSS not replacing it.
niclupien··on Node v0.10.0 (Stable)
I think exactly the same. I'd love to give Node a go for some of my projects but seeing a version like 0.10 kind of dissuade me. On the other hand, there are some big sites built on Node like MySpace, and don't know what to think of it.
niclupien··on Announcing AWS Elastic Beanstalk for Node.js
IMHO Heroku is way more easy to do deploy and makes it more accessible to non-sysadmins.

    heroku create
    git push heroku master
With Amazon, you need to spend some time understanding how it works and what do you want. It's also not very clear for a beginner to define what kind of bill you will get today, in a month, in a year. I think Amazon is trying very hard but I always end up reading tons of documents and finally not really understand what they means in the end.
niclupien··on Google: search for an application
11,100,000 results for "twitter" now that is scary.

The idea is good but having application aggregators such as download.cnet.com, softpedia.com and others in the result means a lot of duplicate entries.

niclupien··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
Love it! In my mind THIS is the best new feature of foundation 4 (I mean the new doc ;)
niclupien··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
I'm a big fan of presentation-free markup and IMHO, SASS offers a good way to achieve it with mixins. Look at this article, it pretty much covers that topic. http://chriseppstein.github.com/blog/2009/09/20/why-styleshe...

The idea is to get something like this :

  @mixin three-column {
    .container { @include container;  }
    .header,
    .footer    { @include column(24); }
    .sidebar   { @include column(6);  }
    article    { @include column(10); }
    .rightbar  { @include column(8);  }
  }

  body#article,
  body#snippet,
  body#blog-post { @include three-column; }
I describe the whole thing with examples here: https://github.com/niclupien/compass-examples/wiki/Example-0...
niclupien··on Ask HN: What's your blog?
I like your blog dude ! I found your's and nathanbarry.com very intersting. The web app challenge is a great idea. I'm Australia for an internship and I gave the link to your blog to my boss for inspiration.
niclupien··on How I feel, when in GIT [animated GIFs]
I don't know if it's because it's late but omg this is hilarious!
niclupien··on Lend wings to Rails development with Hermes (A shell development framework)
ie: for all those times I press ctrl-q accidently instead of ctrl-1
niclupien··on Kickstarter's new team page
Great job. Everybody looks very happy.

How long is the video playing before it loops ?

niclupien··on From Linux to OSX - 1 Year Later
"Can XCode help in this case or do you have to basically be writing Mac/iOS apps to access that power?"

I'm also very interested to get the answer of this.

niclupien··on Gnome: Staring into the abyss
Same thing here. Gnome Shell integrates perfectly with my workflow while Unity does not. I would like to leave Gnome 3 for something better, but that thing is definitely not Unity. I really don't understand all the hate about Gnome 3. There is pros and cons like every other window manager. I use it everyday (mainly for coding and system administration) and it's very stable and it got everything I need and well configured by default.
