nickcotter··on Someone stole a Jasper radio station’s 200-foot tower, owner says
Note that the tower doesn't really look like that picture in the nypost - it's a much more portable looking affair: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y9QMBDPnazGT1cgj9

nickcotter··on Trap and test AWS SES emails locally
Thanks for the link - we’ve been using mailhog for local smtp testing and it still works ok for basic tasks, but it’s not maintained any more.
nickcotter··on Ask HN: How many people on Hacker News live in rural areas?
I live in a village on Dartmoor, UK, complete with a pub dating back to the 12th century. But the village shop has disappeared, the internet and even the water connection seem increasingly fragile. On the other hand, working from home in my own office with a view across the valley, and working on our woodland are great for body and soul. Also, there are enough children around that our kids don’t feel isolated - at the same time we’ve never worried about traffic when they go off on their explorations.

nickcotter··on Google Mars (2005)
I thought I was about to read that it had been discontinued. Glad to see it hasn’t!
nickcotter··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Same here. We can live without the extra pixels. Space is the barrier though. We have a huge old cowshed that the previous owner turned into a snooker room, and we turned into a library with remote control screen. Makes watching a film more of an event. Nice playing games at “life size” scales too. We’ve been through three projectors in 15 years at ~£350 each.
nickcotter··on Master Plan Part 3
My neighbour has a Mercedes eVito van which does something like 200 miles in practice.
nickcotter··on Twitter was down
On the positive side website response time has seen a dramatic improvement…

nickcotter··on Elon Musk wants every Twitter employee sending weekly updates via email
Is the hierarchy totally flat apart from Musk now? I don’t email the CEO of the multinational that I work for weekly updates.
nickcotter··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
They had a PR team as well as a DR team?
nickcotter··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
I’d be surprised if usage didn’t spike with the elections going on.
nickcotter··on Low Energy Chest Fridge
We had a power cut while on holiday. No real damage or loss but the bottom layer is now re-frozen icecream, probably caused by something not quite sealed being stacked sideways.
nickcotter··on Elon Musk considers ‘slight’ Twitter fee for commercial users
Also for "government users" whatever that means.
nickcotter··on The clockwork universe: is free will an illusion?
This has always seemed to me to be the inherent contradiction in free will but I struggle to elaborate it. If it’s my choice then doesn’t that mean it’s determined in some way? In which case it’s not free. But if it’s random then that’s not “will” either. What then is the thing that could be both free and willed?
nickcotter··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
You're right, it could be anytime soon. But I was more concerned with what comes after that: distribution, stock piling etc.
nickcotter··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
Pharmacists don't have them available. Boots for example are "working hard to acquire additional stock" but have suspended their service.
nickcotter··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
According to my GP they had a batch for the over 65s but they ran out pretty quickly. I usually get free flu jabs due to asthma but although it's strongly recommended I'm not aware of it being a definite priority group.
