nick__m··on Lee Kuan Yew's Singapore Story (2023)
It's really an old problem, there were graffiti in Greece in 200AD !
nick__m··on Mathematicians issue warning as AI rapidly gains ground
You can but sadly most people ask for awnsers.
nick__m··on Re: [PATCH] OOM_pardon, a.k.a. don't kill my xlock (2004)
You could launch it as a systemd user target with OOMScoreAdjust=500 in the service section; weird and unconventional but wrapped in .desktop file it doesn't appear to be unwieldy.
nick__m··on Restartable Sequences
That's reads like an egotic cocaine fueled rant mixed with a PBS pledges drive.

I understand why the author deleted it !

nick__m··on Dav2d
It's a Rust/ASM port, look there: https://github.com/memorysafety/rav1d/blob/main/src/ext/x86/...

I am not sure if it is that much safer than the C version when raw assembly is still required.

This thread made me think of this song/sketch from Kids in the Hall.

nick__m··on Navier-Stokes fluid simulation explained with Godot game engine
excellent article, great vulgarisation and human written !

Thank you

nick__m··on EU fines Temu €200M for allowing sale of illegal products
It's so cheaper that you can buy 2, disassemble one and inspect the electronic (spot thermometer and a cheap ESR tester). it's a charger not a nuclear power plant !
nick__m··on What is a Demand Coop
It really depends on the union, mine concentrate on less hours for a salary that follow inflation, parental leaves and a gold plated drug insurance. I work 32.5 hours per week in the summer, have 24 days off, 2 personal days and 12 statutory holidays; that's 36 paid days off !
nick__m··on The Fil-C Optimized Calling Convention
Memory safety for existing C and C++ codebase.
nick__m··on "Not Medically Necessary": Helping America's Health Insurers Deny Coverage
But it was truly not urgent, I would have been ok with waiting 6 months!

And the scans are not scheduled months in advance. We complained that we were only informed of the date and time of the next scan a few days before it... The explanation was that they have a must not be done before and a must be done after dates but the actual scheduling is done just in time so urgent case are prioritized before routine care.

nick__m··on "Not Medically Necessary": Helping America's Health Insurers Deny Coverage
I live in Québec, Canada and the longest I had to wait was 3 months for a gallbladder ablation. And my wife, who is on her fourtht year of ribociclib to prevent her spinal metastasis (breast cancer) from coming back, have timely periodical CT-PET and IRM scans.

MAID is popular not because of lack of care but because Québécois values their autonomy and quality of life above being simply alive for the longest time possible.

nick__m··on Sierra Raises $950M at $15B Valuation
Either it doesn't work or it's happening gradually and then suddenly, like bankruptcy according to Hemingway.
nick__m··on Using the internet like it's 1999
I had cable internet in 1997; it was wonderful in it's unmetered¹ symmetric 10Mbs glory.

1) wasn't supposed to be unlimited but the ISP didn't bother to mesure it until sometime in 2000

nick__m··on NimConf 2026: Dates Announced, Registrations Open
The concepts feature of Nim really looks like what your looking for https://nim-lang.org/docs/manual.html#concepts
nick__m··on SpaceX files to go public
Thank you for posting that. I also read that on some less authoritative source I don't remember. It's truly scandalous. I wish ETFs will revolt and apply the old rule for inclusion, but I have no illusion it will happen.
nick__m··on The rise and fall of IBM's 4 Pi aerospace computers: an illustrated history
just one: why it named System/4 Pi ? (the Pi part especially)
nick__m··on Scientific audio equipment analysis with analyzer shows no difference in quality
There a difference between overpriced and snake oil. If you claim that your cables "gives the breath-taking experience of ‘being there’ thanks to the purity of its conductors and their precise geometry" your firmly into the snake oil territory. If you sell an amp with hand picked components to achieve 0.001% THD at 100w on a 4KHz test tone, it's probably overkill and overpriced but unlike the cables it's not fraud adjacent.
nick__m··on Twice this week, I have come across embarassingly bad data
As long as the garbage data is authentic and the method used to produce it is adequately detailed, I agree with you that: "it's better to publish the garbage data than to not publish it"

But fake data or garbage data without the method, is better left unpublished !

nick__m··on We haven't seen the worst of what gambling and prediction markets will do
It's the inverse, here how you have to bet (unless you plan to be doing the hands on assassination works) : X will get re-elected. Company Y CEO will not change in 2027. This is not artist Z last tour. Athlete K will participate in this event etc.

Like I said elsewhere in this thread the bet have to be lost if you want your target dead.

nick__m··on We haven't seen the worst of what gambling and prediction markets will do
If someone want him dead, someone have to bet that million on the target being alive at a specific date. Unless someone plan to do the execution themselves, the bet must be lost for the target to be unalive !
nick__m··on Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US
I too had esophagogastroduodenoscopy and the "sedation" I received as a barely noticeable dose of fentanyl. It was unpleasant to feel like I was drowning in saliva but it was quite bearable.

If I ever receive that procedure again, I will ask to skip the fentanyl microdose. The anesthesia and the buzz were not only underwhelming but for some reasons I started to feel the typical opioid warmth when the procedure was almost completed. Had they waited a few minutes after the IM injection I might have had another opinion on the usefulness on fentanyl during endoscopie because the last 30s were almost pleasant!

nick__m··on FLASH radiotherapy's bold approach to cancer treatment
Because the cancers cells adapt! (fast reproduction and high mutation rate of the cancerous cells make that process quicker than antibiotics resistance)
nick__m··on FLASH radiotherapy's bold approach to cancer treatment
from the article (pay attention to the part in italics):

FLASH radiotherapy flips the conventional approach on its head, delivering a single dose of ultrahigh-power radiation in a burst that typically lasts less than one-tenth of a second. In study after study, this technique causes significantly less injury to normal tissue than conventional radiation does, without compromising its antitumor effect.

nick__m··on America vs. Singapore: You can't save your way out of economic shocks
I actually like the forced saving of Québec. I also have a defined benefit pension plan, a TFSA and RRSP but I am happy to be forced to contribute the RRQ for the general welfare of the province even though I know how manage my portfolio.

Considering that they also have to consider economic development in their investment decisions, the RRQ funds are well managed by the CDPQ.

nick__m··on Designing a 36-key custom keyboard layout (2021)
Reading those keyboards posts, and the accompanying replies, make me feel like an unwashed troglodyte; 96-key is the lowest I am willing to go.
nick__m··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
Here the law https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2332g it says "shall be sentenced to a term of imprisonment not less than 25 years or to imprisonment for life." Even conspiring to acquire them is as illegal as possession!
nick__m··on Nvidia shares are down after report that its OpenAI investment stalled
Doing nothing different is the kind of plan I can easily execute !
nick__m··on Nvidia shares are down after report that its OpenAI investment stalled

It will be worse than the dot com bust.
If you believe it will happen in the next 6 months how do you prepare for that?
nick__m··on Europe just started building a 'kill switch' for U.S. tech
I don't know if your wrong or right about "The Morning Star" but Morningstar.com is a financial firm specialized in research and recommendations. They have a lot's of influence relative to their relatively small holdings.
