nfd··on Show HN: I made a Hacker News for podcasts
That's a new favorite of mine.
nfd··on The Minecraft Generation
That's horrifying.
nfd··on When did porn become sex ed?
Europe?
nfd··on Meeting People Is Easy, but Hard
Alright, I parse it, and I blame the post-finals slump I'm caught in. Propositionally, the relationship's fine and it's clearly stated, despite what sleepy-me might've thought a couple hours ago. But what's the useful assertion? Assume high programming skill, low shock; is it trying to say that programmers are obviously all socially oblivious? Does it say that it's especially common for everyone to know any amount less than all of the information in the link?

Heck, is an inverse-corollary relationship even meaningful if you only have one datum (one double of the two observations he's made) and not a sliding range?

nfd··on Meeting People Is Easy, but Hard
I... can't parse that sentence.
nfd··on America's High School Graduates Look Like Other Countries' High School Dropouts
I didn't get regular social interaction for a really long time. Think on the order of 10 years. Turns out that people really need it. I spent most of about 5 years mostly holed up in my room teaching myself about programming, crypto, bits of math, reading, playing games, and breaking and fixing my pet Linux install. I don't regret teaching myself that much for an instant, but I do realize that my entire life probably would've been much better much earlier if I'd gone to school. I could've just skipped all the depression and loneliness I felt between the ages of 8 and 15.

Look, I was homeschooled, and it's possible to do it right. Don't get me wrong. The way I was homeschooled, however, wreaked total havoc on my long-term mental health (though you better believe I ran the equivalent of "lock your child in a basement with an Apple II and a book of documentation on Applesoft Basic" on myself and learned what a sweet hack looks like). I ran headfirst into college with poor social skills and no practice working under actual pressure. It's taken a nasty toll on my body and I'm still struggling to keep my weight from dipping even more. I learned a lot of lessons really, really quickly. I'm a natural extrovert. It was a special hell.

I'm not saying you're wrong. Sounds like a pretty good idea, even. _Please be damn sure you know what you're doing._ And I'm here if you've got questions.

Weird. If you natively visualize things, I natively reduce them to text. It's damn hard for me to remember the fine details of an image, but I can remember a description. And I zip through most reading material really quickly, unless it's really verbose or overly purpled.
nfd··on Dear Cryptocat Users
A usable, secure messenger is a pretty important niche to fill. Cryptocat is a good concept (usability is important), but its implementation is flawed enough that it's worse than useless. With some TLC, better ground-up design, and through auditing? Pretty sweet. There isn't one messenger that fills every niche reasonably well (eg. Tox is fragmented and hasn't been audited as far as I'm aware, Jitsi is clunky and relies heavily on outside services, Retroshare requires an intricate knowledge of GPG, several other messengers sit over Tor which requires education, and libpurple is garbage, etc.).
nfd··on Tableau stock down almost 50%
I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that they're going to keep going on that guy, possibly with a bit of delay. Running joke over here is that Fremont is basically TableauVille. Or they're to Fremont as Microsoft is to Redmond. Hell, rumor has it that new buildings are being built in Fremont just for their damn expansion right now (take a wild guess if you're in the neighborhood which ones--it's not hard, just look for glass). I doubt even a big dip in share price is gonna quash their thirst for real estate for very long.
nfd··on Jailbreak firmware turns cheap digital walkie-talkie into DMR scanning receiver
Still is heavy on the GTFO, they still know how to tell tell people to fuck off in innovative and superficially polite ways.
nfd··on Android Full Disk Encryption Cold Boot Attack (2012)
Most Android phones throttle the rate you're allowed to enter PINs if you fail multiple times in a row (from minutes to hours). You can set the phone to wipe the entire flash memory if too many PIN entries in a row fail.
nfd··on Skype for Windows is broken
Oh, and watching two video feeds at once? That's "not supported".
nfd··on Kazakhstan to MitM all HTTPS traffic starting Jan 1
Raise awareness, spread the word about Tor. If they start running attacks against Tor, start an uproar. And pitch Tor as an elementary security measure; say "do this to make your communications more secure." It isn't perfect, but maybe it's better than nothing?
nfd··on Adsuck – a small DNS server that spoofs blacklisted addresses
If you're Joe User, it's much easier to install a browser plugin or hosts file than it is to set up a DNS server of your own, route your machines to it (even internally), configure it properly...
nfd··on Please don't use Slack for FOSS projects
Slack may have a working IRC bridge, but it still has a closed-source server. You're still trusting a third-party with all your data.
nfd··on Please don't use Slack for FOSS projects
Slack and IRC have two different (but interconnected) use cases. I love IRC, and I haunt a couple servers to chill or to ask an occasional newbie question. I'm pretty comfortable with IRC; it's a part of my culture.

I often find myself needing to establish a line of communication between people who aren't particularly tech-savvy. Slack works excellently for this: I make a new team, fire off some invites, and everyone just understands how it works. I can only imagine that, say, coordinating dev, corporate, and sales over IRC would be like living in the same circle of hell cardinally occupied by people who talk at the theater. If IRC works well for your team (whatever it is), excellent! Don't try to fix something that isn't broken. Slack isn't flawless, but it does have its usecases, and it fills them very nicely.

nfd··on Ask HN: Where can I find decent near-eye displays for less than $200?
I've seen this! I guess it's my best bet. The only thing that was scaring me away was the pretty low resolution (even for other near-eye displays I've seen).
nfd··on Ask HN: Where can I find decent near-eye displays for less than $200?
Looks pretty good, but it also looks like they're pretty dependent on the software suites and non-display hardware they're shipped with. Got any experience with them?

Ooh; I should clarify: I already wear glasses, so I was planning to hold the display with a printed chassis.

nfd··on Ask HN: How much do you earn with donations vs. ads?
Yeah, you'd basically need cash or cryptocurrency for that size of microtransaction (nanotransaction?). If I could pitch in 20-50 cents to a project I like in a few seconds, I would.
