Level1Techs make their own high end KVMs. They’re expensive but reasonable if you need high refresh support and other such niceties.
newdee··on Feeling Sad about AI
> and your existing skill and experience mean you can master these new tools, provide value, and execute at a level far greater than anyone who is just getting started building software using agents without any of your depth.

And now the ladder is effectively pulled up behind those pre-AI engineers. What does the pipeline for newcomers look like? How do those who come after achieve that same level of depth and understanding in a world where AI permeates everything?

newdee··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
Dunno, my experience has been different. I cycle between macOS, Linux and Windows all day every day and it’s just automatic muscle memory for me now as I switch between each. Thanks for the link though, keeping that stashed.
newdee··on As a Windows user, it's a surreal way to install a program
I don’t think less advanced users think that deeply about it.

They just see “oh, I drag the app to applications”. The main issue I’ve seen is that people try to run the .app from the disk image, or forget to eject the image after moving the app.

Well designed dmg drag-drop style deployments will actually put some background artwork with arrows and text instructions telling the user to drag and drop into Applications.

Still, I think .pkg package style installers are the most intuitive process for non-techies, especially those coming from windows where MSI and install wizard style exes are common.

newdee··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
It takes over port 22 on the Tailscale interface only. Only had problems with this when I’ve wanted to hit a host’s non-Tailscale ssh service via Tailscale. Otherwise it’s been great for me
newdee··on New York becomes the first state to impose a data center moratorium
What about the technology itself is evil?
newdee··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
I don’t think they were making that comparison, rather that touristy cities have more pickpockets, which is obviously true and expected.

You seem to be very sensitive when it comes to anyone that might deign to question the supremacy of the US and very quick to disparage those outside of it.

newdee··on Steam Machine launches today
I don’t really think were disagreeing at this point…
newdee··on Ask HN: Anthropic banned me from using Claude Code and I don't know what to do
I fear that it is a dead end once they start doing KYC via Persona.
newdee··on Steam Machine launches today
Steam machine is a console: - homogenous and standardised hardware - vendor backed compatibility certification programme - standardised OS with atomic, image based updates - plug in, login and play your library potentially without touching a mouse or keyboard - HDMI CEC out of box - controller integration with instant sleep/wake (as seen on steam deck) - operates quietly

Steam machine is a PC (not like a console): - not priced as a loss leader - runs any desktop OS - it’s a PC

You can do all of this out of box, it’s turnkey, it’s primarily a console experience but a PC if you need it. My point was that comparing this to a prebuilt or BYO PC is like comparing a console to a PC. Different value prop.

newdee··on Steam Machine launches today
Yes, you could also buy a gaming console instead of a PC. These are not the same things. This will sell out.
newdee··on Ember, a native iOS Hacker News reader I built around accessibility
Looks great, do you plan on publishing to the AppStore?
newdee··on Microsoft builds MacBook Pro rival with NVIDIA-powered Surface Laptop Ultra
This is false in my experience. You can use the cli to clear the quarantine bit, or you can take the (admittedly annoying) trip to system preferences to override. This is rarely something I need to do; most software is already signed and notarised.

Also not at all equivalent to being forced into linking an online account before being allowed to use your computer at all.

newdee··on The seed oil panic is hurting my cardiac patients
The sugar you get from fruit is also accompanied by fiber, water and other nutrients. Also harder to overeat and generally gets released into the bloodstream more slowly. I think the argument here is to eat less (highly) processed food in favour of whole foods.
newdee··on I love Linux, but I can't quit Windows
> They are either solvable without a comp sci degree, or (and this is the important part) simply ignorable while still being able to use the computer

If this were true there’d be no need for IT/tech support services.

newdee··on Mullvad exit IPs are surprisingly identifying
Have you taken a look at Mullvad’s browser?
newdee··on Linux gaming is faster because Windows APIs are becoming Linux kernel features
Agreed. Recommendations to use Arch-based distros especially. My personal recommendation, which has ended up sticking for a few Linux-curious gamer friends, has always been Bazzite.
newdee··on Metal Gear Solid 2's source code has been leaked on 4chan
Do you think this leak will harm sales of the Switch 2 version?
newdee··on UK to permanently ban future generations from buying cigarettes
Why not?
newdee··on Vercel April 2026 security incident
> Vercel’s internal OAuth configurations appear to have allowed this action to grant these broad permissions in Vercel’s enterprise Google Workspace.

This was an interesting tidbit too. If true, this means that Vercel’s IT/Infosec maybe didn’t bother enabling the allowlist and request/review features for OAuth apps in their Google Workspace.

On top of that, they almost certainly didn’t enable the scope limits for unchecked OAuth apps (e.g limiting it to sign-on/basic profile scopes).

newdee··on Vercel April 2026 security incident
It looks like the app has already been deleted
newdee··on Apple Silicon and Virtual Machines: Beating the 2 VM Limit (2023)
Yes and many people choose differently to you and that’s ok. They are free to do so.
newdee··on Apple Silicon and Virtual Machines: Beating the 2 VM Limit (2023)
macOS* VMs. And if you don’t care about that, is it no longer solid?
newdee··on How to get better at guitar
The universe didn’t offer a manual, but mankind has largely arrived at some orthodoxy for the most efficient and ergonomic ways to fret, bend, pluck, tap, strum, etc. In many cases, these are objectively better techniques to use once mastered, but they’re not the only way.
newdee··on German implementation of eIDAS will require an Apple/Google account to function
Genuinely curious to hear what great value you think is being delivered to society by adtech.
newdee··on Hold on to Your Hardware
It would be if it wasn’t also universally shit.
newdee··on Apple announces new Mac sales record following MacBook Neo launch
Very neat looking device for the price you paid, but you do not mention how (and I have doubts that) it competes in the areas of:

Fit and finish (not being made of creaky plastic) Display brightness & colour representation Battery life Trackpad Keyboard

For a portable these are just as important as “the numbers”for most people and definitely more noticeable. Perhaps not the case for you though!

newdee··on Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill
And then only trusted devices with an “acceptable” posture and valid manufacturer attestation can participate! Hellscape.
newdee··on Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill
Yes, parental controls already exist. You’re up and down this thread advocating for this particular bill, but what does the technical solution actually look like to you beyond the controls already available? And with regards to account creation specifically, what do you see as a workable solution that isn’t defeated by a “pinky swear”?
