newdee··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
It is, and people seem to ascribe some implicit goodness to these companies because they’re seen as providing an alternative to an implicitly evil industry and degenerate dietary choice. Truth is, they’re running the same game, just with a less wholesome food product.

I dunno, I kinda like the new icons.
newdee··on RFK's proposal to let bird flu spread through poultry
I’d rather eat an actual egg than some hyper processed, plant based “alternative”.
newdee··on Show HN: Octelium – FOSS Alternative to Teleport, Cloudflare, Tailscale, Ngrok
I’ll be keeping an eye on this, but I’ve gotta say, first glance it just seems like it does way too much, and all by a solo dev in private? Impressive but also perturbing.

All marketing? None of it is real? Citation?
newdee··on No Hello
Hi
newdee··on No Hello
Yep. This is the way I’ve ended up handling it. I believe it has been established now that these interruptions in flow (context switching) have a cost in terms of time taken to refocus on a task. Minutes vs the few seconds it took to have that focus broken and clicking away into a single word DM.

You’re not helping people by neglecting to point out errant use of messaging platforms. It harms productivity and is something that a manager should be treating. You don’t need to be “hard” about it, but not guiding people is arguably more harmful than maybe a couple of hurt feelings. Make things better.
newdee··on No Hello
I just drop malformed packets that only contain “hello”
newdee··on No Hello
Surely it’s more efficient (for both parties) to type and be able to read the whole thing and then respond meaningfully?

E.g. If you’ve just say “hi”, two hours later I get to my DMs and say “hey what’s up?” and you end up not following up with the “actual” message straight away, let’s say another hour later, this all took way longer than necessary.

The no-hello approach just makes sense when dealing with asynchronous messaging platforms such as Slack. IMO, not following the no-hello approach is bad etiquette and there’s a ton of people out there who still don’t really get that.

newdee··on Containerization is a Swift package for running Linux containers on macOS
Atomic distros (fedora’s specifically) are what got me to stick to desktop Linux. That was after seeing how well the Steam Deck worked, and therefore Proton. I haven’t reinstalled in almost 2 years. Not even got the distro itch once.

Tailscale is more than just a VPN. It has a number of features and capabilities which make it more like a private overlay network that just seems to work wherever and whenever. Some of those features; WireGuard (the VPN bit), NAT punching, automatic key distribution, ACLs, split or full tunnel routing to internet resources, SSO. Just to name a few.
newdee··on Just Fucking Use React
Well, that’s just like your opinion, man.
newdee··on Windows 11 is closing a loophole that let you skip making a Microsoft account
Well, better keep a hold of those older Win11 ISOs then.

The only beneficiaries of this are corps who want to ensure that new devices must check-in for AutoPilot enrolment on first boot out-of-box.

In fact, Macs with Apple silicon will require an internet connection on setup, but only after that machine has been online at least once before and has seen that it’s registered to business (handled by a firmware flag).

Which is ultimately another way of saying they don’t care about customers and only care about their bottom line (?)
newdee··on Coffee reduces risk of Type 2 Diabetes; okay to add cream, but not sweetener
> I do like light roasts, except i "feel" they're a bit too caffiene-y.

As I understand it, the darker the roast the more caffeine has been “burnt” off, so this would explain what you’re describing.

newdee··on X users are unable to post “Signal.me” links
I’m reminded of this line from Stewart Lee, when talking about the disillusioned British working class voting for radical political parties/causes:

“A protest vote for UKIP is like shitting your hotel bed as a protest against bad service, then realising you now have to sleep in a shitted bed.”

newdee··on Show HN: FlashSpace – fast, open-source, macOS Spaces replacement
Precisely. It’s not really about system performance anymore, which just leaves the workflow benefits once you get used to it. As you point out, when using keyboard shortcuts thoroughly, the WM behaviours just make sense.

Command-Tab, Tab to select the app for foreground, Command-N for a new window. Combined with Command-Space for Spotlight (or Alfred/Raycast) it’s all very quick and seamless.

newdee··on Apple's Best Option: Decentralize iCloud
Starmer has a long history of authoritarian tendencies, he’s always sided with the police or establishment powers, even when there was public outcry over the circumstances. He’s going to bend to whichever powerful spooks are pushing for this.

Most notable are the cases of Ian Tomlinson, Student Fees Protests and Jimmy Saville. Generally though, he’s been in favour or instructed his party not to oppose the introduction of greater police powers.

Man is a snake.

newdee··on Show HN: FlashSpace – fast, open-source, macOS Spaces replacement
> Every single running UI app needs a window.

I’m sorry, but this is false. The default/conventional behaviour is for apps to keep running even if all their windows are closed.

There’s actually a toggle for this behaviour on the app delegate.[0]

You may be thinking about LSUIElement, which is loosely related, but doesn’t mandate that windowless apps must quit. [1]

I’ve been very happy with the Fedora Atomic spins overall. Bazzite is a great starting point if you also care about gaming.
newdee··on Norway's wealth fund now worth $319,900 per citizen
It’s easy to stand on the outside, pissing inwards, isn’t it? So thanks for the sweeping generalisations and absolutes, very helpful.

Since you have made no point so far, only offering spiteful generalisations and offence, I feel my lived experience is a good a counter point for those who may scroll by and want to see an alternative view.

newdee··on Norway's wealth fund now worth $319,900 per citizen
Counter point: the NHS saved my life last year. I’m glad it exists and I’m grateful for the amazing people who work at its front lines.
newdee··on Avoid ISP Routers (2024)
More and more I see articles and videos about programmable SFP modules which can be used to directly connect devices like UDM to GPON/XG(S)-PON networks, completely bypassing the ISP provided ONT.

You may well find something that fits your situation with a little searching.

newdee··on Go Is a Well-Designed Language
People do this with all sorts of things, but ultimately want validation that they made the “right” choice. At least that’s the most charitable assumption I can make.
