Income and wealth are not the same thing. Wealth is a measure of total assets, while income is annual wages and investment income. A lot of high income people carry huge student loan and housing debt and are not wealthy.
Why? Our "poor" have televisions, air conditioning, cars, and homes. There's so much food in America that obesity is a major health issue. This is a profound success and departure from the normal human condition of misery. Please put down the Marxist textbook.
I've lived, studied, and worked abroad, and you definitely get the wanderlust out of your system. The U.S. is amazing and there's a reason everybody wants to come here. The U.S. is actually getting more interesting as regional spots like Austin and Asheville bloom and nationwide America continues to restore its urban city centers.
Yeah but you obviously have a doctorate and commensurate experience to get hired. With respect to local hiring, I'm sure making less than what you'd earn in Seattle or San Jose is ok, but it isn't the high life that the OP was talking about.
Yep, I've worked in China and the only way to get to live abroad on a fat expat stipend is to have your existing US or European employer rotate you there. If you try to get a job through local channels you'll be getting a crappy local salary. Do not try to work overseas right out of school-- you are far better off getting solid industry experience and then trying to make the jump. Working abroad is a career-killer too, most of these operations are corporate backwaters.
Pull yourself together, your posts are easily proven factually wrong and your garbage posts are destroying HN.
In addition to BP's $4billion criminal settlement, BP executives were individually indicted for manslaughter and other crimes, and many of the subcontractors also face charges:
A better question is why local zoning failed to keep the plant away from homes, and why their insurance company wasn't more concerned about conditions at the plant.
Hitchhiking is pretty dangerous. Better to use a car-sharing board. I once took a long-distance Greyhound bus to Florida at Christmas, which was filled with homeless wanderers who had splurged for the bus ticket because they said hitchhiking was too dangerous. It isn't an option at all for women and most of the men had stories about being robbed, aggressively solicited for sex, or even having been shot at while walking roadside.
Problem is that my business is in VA, and I'm now subject to complying with taxing authorities in, say, California, where I don't have representation or a physical presence. It is unconstitutional in principle.
Don't blame Bush, the Obama administration Justice department created the Miranda exception for "operational terrorists". This has nothing to do with enemy combatants; rather, there is the possibility that an active terror suspect on US soil has information about an active threat to public safety, and the police have a right (and duty) to question him about possible threats.
Why do you assume the regulated entity will be better? Private carriers UPS and FedEx deliver to the doorstep of my farm, whereas the "universal service" US Postal Service won't come near us and requires we have a PO Box in town.
Nope, the medallion systems exist to block new competition. Sure there are some regulations that seem to favor consumers-- such as price controls-- but these are a short-term benefit, and at the cost of reduced innovation. Far better to allow competition, and customer service will improve through market action rather than government rule-making.
Bitter and jealous is no way to go through life. All of these guys executed on their project or have specialized knowledge. The pie is not zero-sum, and we live in the greatest, most fair time in human history.
Of course should be allowed to own the truck, but I'd have a problem with him parking it visibly and operating it regularly in a residential neighborhood.
Kids bike and play in neighborhood streets. Surely you recognize that some untrained guy driving a massive firetruck up and down that street just to get groceries is a problem.
This is long established common law. Just because it is your property, you cannot escape your obligation to mitigate obvious hazards, particularly where children are involved. So hanging a tree swing that is unsafe and snaps, injuring a child playing on it, still creates liability for you even though the child was trespassing.
I'd be pissed to be his neighbor. The firetruck spews dirty exhaust, is unsafe if there are kids running around, and definitely is an eyesore. Even though there's no HOA he is probably running afoul of city or county zoning rules...you shouldn't be able to park large work trucks in residential neighborhoods.
Not sure where you live, but most school districts are already a combination of county and state funding. The state funding does the work of helping poorer districts, and targeted federal funding in turn helps poor states. You are assuming that money is the problem, when the reality is that the US spends far more per student than Finland.
That's only partially true-- Amtrak owns the Northeast corridor. Amtrak's only innovation in forty years (!) on the NEC is Acela, a "high speed" offering that is marginally faster than regular service (shorter times mainly because Acela makes fewer stops) and is more expensive than private air shuttle travel along the same routes.
