literally a no-op...junk mail is printed, USPS delivers it against my will, I put it in my recycle bin...another truck comes and empties that bin
this is well-functioning?
Our military budget will soon pass $1 trillion annually
Our elected representatives now routinely provide the Pentagon with more money than it even requests
Every NYTimes article on Ukraine is riddled with comments suggesting we provide a blank check for weaponry
The Washington Post likes to tell me every day why it is essential the US build more $15 billion aircraft carriers to provoke China
This is just one reason why we have poverty and always will
You may be overestimating the time you need to "recover"...my guess is you will be fine after a couple of weeks of low stress and a change of scenery
As to living in a HCOL area...the stress won't end, look at relocating.
All of these tech companies are overinvested in real estate
now your resume is in a stack with 300 other dev resumes instead of 3
honestly I may just make my current tech job my last, its increasingly not worth it to get waterboarded like this just to write unit tests
Reform is otherwise either totally impossible or practically impossible on an adult's reasonable time horizon
Any attempt at change will result in the change agent being labeled a Nazi or a Trumper
Just let it fail
After the failure is objective, the rats will scurry and real change will be possible
It would have been useful for Moritz to at least acknowledge how much of California feudalism has been geared to rewarding his ilk
If you are a rich VC, how about just building twenty houses?
hurry up, you'll keep the President and Secretary-General waiting!
if your severance package isn't "good enough" in your opinion, you keep it and reformat it...eventually they tell you that your severance will go away unless you return the equipment
most returned equipment will just become e-waste, no one is going to breathe life into my four year old laptop
I see a lot of companies just telling people to keep it and use it as they see fit
some security types freak out about former employees being able to access "confidential" information on their own laptops after being terminated...newsflash: if we wanted to mail this stuff to North Korea we could have been doing it five times a day
I mean...the day Musk took over Twitter, lots of comments here were calling for twitter.com to be kicked off the internet...
so far...is anything really happening?
I enjoyed the episode with Nick Offerman, but it seem self-contained
otherwise, we've got two people driving around CG dystopia wreckage and having encounters...but there isn't much plot or character development
the main characters seem stereotypical...the precocious smartass teen, the grizzled older guy...I'm waiting for something to arrive, hopefully it will
Microsoft can't rethink Windows because they will never corral the PC makers on a reasonable timetable
PC makers are still selling the same laptops as four years ago (modulo minor spec bumps) because Windows is basically the same OS as four years ago (modulo some UI fluff). Intel and AMD are stuck in the middle waiting for the deadlock to break...but the only winner is Apple.
This isn't controversial and it happened in the dot-com bubble aftermath
For many, they were never deeply committed to IT anyway and were only following good/easy-to-attain positions
For some, they had bills to pay and couldn't afford to wait things out
The most interesting class of workers in this round are the (former) FAANG cohort of overcompensated middle-performers. These people were gut-punched by their layoffs, and they will be gut-punched again when they see future offers that may be 50% of what they were making before. HN isn't receptive to these types of observations so it will likely just have to sink in over time...the days of coding React for two hours a day and pulling in total comp of $400k are probably gone forever.
markets are crowded and saturated, most participants are just doing replacement business (for example, Lenovo, Apple, Samsung selling replacements to people who already purchased their products)
it takes fewer people to maintain a business than to build one
there just isn't as much work to do, and what is remaining is quickly being automated and/or commoditized
tl;dr: you may not be needed
- cheerleading war in Ukraine
- cheerleading anti-China sentiment (on their iPhones!)
- lamenting being laid off
Well guess what folks - we have a massive enlistment deficit in every armed service
Kill three birds with one stone, enlist today!
if there is no realistic hope of economic progress, people will just stop trying
we already accept that home ownership has become "for the rich"...what next? car ownership?
we can brag about our low unemployment rate...it doesn't look so rosy when you factor in workforce participation
Rust is the tool you use when you are done prototyping, not when you are just beginning
of course for a $14.99 monthly subscription to HomeAppliancesPlus I will be able to skip the ads...
its very simple - rates are higher, they are going higher still, and they are going to stay high
homes will be a minimum 20% cheaper in 18 months
the Fed is completely focused on reducing asset prices, and they have the tools to produce the outcome they want
now: starlink satellites are ruining astronomy for like sixty people whaaaa everything sucks!
this is why I no longer give any credit to online bellyaching
backyard astronomers: we don't care about you
if only starlink satellites could be arranged in the shape of Trump's face directly above laid-off Twitter engineers, life would be perfect
since the entire world economy would implode if the US defaulted, we might as well just eliminate the debt limit and force the world to eat the penalty of letting the USD become waaaaay-too-big-to-fail
debt hawks warned of end-times if our debt ever hit $5 trillion...then $10 trillion...then $20 trillion...
if the US can survive $31 trillion in debt, I'm not sure why $50 trillion would sink it...or $80 trillion...or whatever
we're headed there anyway
nonsense, not having to deal with corporate life is easily worth $50k on its own
no dumb meetings
no imbeciles imposing their will on you just because they started before you
no moronic company brainwashing, thought-policing, bossware etc etc
There were no widespread prolonged outages, even though most of reddit etc was perversely hoping people would suffer so they would have an excuse to blame the Governor
High-end desktops are in a weird niche
They're overkill for most uses, but also completely incapable of handling "big" problems (multi PB datasets, timely rendering of multi-hour 4k content, etc)....for that you still need to divide and conquer in the server room
HCL is its own language so Hashicorp can "own" the experience, tie you into an Enterprise toolchain, and scratch their "I've always wanted to build a language!" itch
But it works and ops people love it because most ops people in industry today cannot even write a simple Python script. So...tools like Pulumi are actually out of their reach.
not that anyone in Rome would want you to put out a fire there, I'm sure they are all praying an earthquake will relieve them of this brutalist masterpiece
