neuromancer2701··on New Lower-Cost, AMD-Powered M5a and R5a EC2 Instances
The "Rome" EPYC processors have 64 cores and 128 threads and with a dual processor board you can have 128 cores 256 threads in a 1U server.
neuromancer2701··on Musk shakes up SpaceX in race to make satellite launch window: sources
Amen, I am in a smaller city in Central Va. If you go more than 10 minutes outside the city no Comcast. There is a local cable company but it is 3x the Comcast price for half the speed. I can be 15 minutes outside of the city and have no internet options.
neuromancer2701··on The path to $100B [video]
I love Daniel Suarez's pair: Daemon and FreedomTM.
neuromancer2701··on New autonomous farm wants to produce food without human workers
Like Polyface farms here in Central Va: http://www.polyfacefarms.com/
neuromancer2701··on ARM releases free Cortex-M processor cores for FPGAs
Those are actually silicon hardware cores all of these are soft-core applications.
neuromancer2701··on Startups that launched today at Y Combinator’s S18 Demo Day 1
"Undoubtedly better for the environment than a carnivorous diet"

I think this quote is extremely dubious. How many of these companies study what the beyond organic movement is going with restorative agriculture. Having cows eat and poop grass is a really good thing for rebuilding what industrial farming has done to acres of land across the US.

This just smells of short cutting a process very similar to industrial farming that got us into this position to begin with.

neuromancer2701··on AMD Creates Quad Core Zen SoC with 24 Vega CUs for Chinese Consoles
I meant like the ZOTAC ZBOX MA551 which has been basically vaporware for the last 9 months showing up at consumer show every 3 or 4 months. NUC like package.
neuromancer2701··on AMD Creates Quad Core Zen SoC with 24 Vega CUs for Chinese Consoles
I wonder how long it would take to get mainline linux support and when these boxes could be bought off of Aliexpress. There are basically no small form factor 2400G systems and this have better graphics.
neuromancer2701··on When California Was the Bear Republic
One issue that could be addressed internally is the number of state representatives and the city/rural allocation. From my understanding California still has the same number of state representatives(from when it was admitted to the US)

So a city will have like 12 and the millions of acres around it will only have 1. I think this is a general problem(under-representation) in the US e.g. The House but California is even more clear example of it.

neuromancer2701··on Supreme Court Rules Police Need Warrant to Track Your Cellphone
I think an argument is that at some point the government becomes an entity of its own e.g. thousands of faceless bureaucrats so they are not fighting for the commons but for their own existence.
neuromancer2701··on Seaweed in Cow Feed Reduces Methane Emissions Almost Entirely
It would be interesting to compare feedlot vs feedlot/algae vs grassfed. There is already a solution to this problem that has numerous other benefits. Revert all of the former grasslands that are monoculture fields of corn to raise grassfed beef.
neuromancer2701··on Bricklayers Think They’re Safe from Robots
Yeah, some of these first gen robots seem very stuck in old industrial equipment paradigm. A single Massive lumbering slow robots vs multiple smaller agile robots working together with modern software(e.g. ML/AL).

There is no technical reason why the end user couldn't map out corners and turns in a CAD program. I think it is a physical limitation because the Bot is so large.

neuromancer2701··on XPS 13 developer edition 7th generation available
Maybe next years we can get one of the Zen APUs.
neuromancer2701··on Statement on Cryptocurrencies and Initial Coin Offerings
What about using the ICO tokens as a sort of gift certificate for your product at a later date?

Isn't that what Brave did with the BAT ICO?

neuromancer2701··on Musk revises Mars ambitions
But there are rumors of the New Armstrong that will rival the BFG so Bezos is not stopping at the New Glenn.
neuromancer2701··on Stressful lives of older tech workers
I work at Telecom company in central Virginia. I am 38 and one of the youngest employees in my group. None of the engineers in the 50s/60s are like the people in this article. There is huge resistance to changing anything. Web architecture from the 90s, C++11 is too cutting edge. Change is bad, stasis is good.
neuromancer2701··on Simple Techniques for Lowering the Cost of Zero-Energy Homes
This is all within the paradigm of convention construction.

The thermal properties of compressed earth brick(CEB) make heating and cool a house a lot different. It would be interesting to see what the financial number are if CEB were used instead of modern stick housing.

neuromancer2701··on All 50 startups from Y Combinator’s Summer 2017 Demo Day 1
email me, I am working on a outdoor rover. Hopefully for beyond organic farm products. http://openrover.com/ haven't finished updating the site from this summers project.
neuromancer2701··on Ask HN: Allowance for kids?
My son is only 2 so we haven't gotten there yet. But I like the block of tasks that the child has to do with no reward because that is a refection of real life(we all have to take out the trash, mow the lawn, etc).

But in addition to that you encourage the child to think outside of those tasks and to proposal tasks for money/reward mini-business plans. Get them to think entrepreneurial. Then hopefully as they grow older they may petition the neighbors, etc.

neuromancer2701··on Ask HN: Is Georgia Tech's Online Master in CS Worth It?
I would say that I am an engineer than need motivation to do course work outside of school/work. These classes are not your average MOOC that you can just forget about. I think there is enough structure and incentive to encourage you on. CV was pretty brutal because it has been so long from any decent math for me and AI was insane as well.
neuromancer2701··on Ask HN: Is Georgia Tech's Online Master in CS Worth It?
I am 7/10 through the program right now. I joined the program to get a specialization in Robotics. There is only currently one robotics course(AI for Robotics by Prof Thrun) and supposedly the various robotics professors have been resistant to putting their classes online. I was able to do a Special Projects class this summer with a Professor from GT Lorraine in France. He helped me design and build a outdoor robot, it was pretty awesome. But it is only 3 credit toward the degree.

I think GT is just understanding all the potential they have in this program. There are a lot entrepreneurial resources that are only catering to on campus students and they realizing that the OMSCS students want to take these electives and be apart of these programs.

neuromancer2701··on Time.gif
My company makes a DAS(distributed Antenna System) product with an embedded web interface. All of our web sites have C/C++ cgi back ends. There are more makefiles in the Web folder than the whole rest of system. It is quite mind boggling. But the engineer that has control over this area is stuck in the 90s.
neuromancer2701··on Four Earth-sized planets detected orbiting the nearest sun-like star
If you have ever seen Ron D. Moore's Virtuality. They based the Phaeton off of Orion and it is pretty cool to see how it would work. They have a whole sequence of dropping the nukes behind the ship and the explosions pushing the massive pusher plate.
neuromancer2701··on Treble: A modular base for Android
So is this a way around mainlining all of the silicon vendor's various kernels? I have heard that each vendor just hacks their hardware into the 3.10.X and then just keeps a repo of it to meet open source requirements. Because they are unable to make the quality requirements to get their code upstream.
neuromancer2701··on Treble: A modular base for Android
This would seem to allow security updates at a faster rate, but the linux kernel will forever be abandoned to hardware vendor whims aka still on 3.10.X
neuromancer2701··on More Robots, Fewer Jobs: capital vs. labor in production
I would say that there is at least two type of human labor: humans pretending to be machines and value added labor e.g. R&D/IP generation. Labor that generates IP and new products should not be viewed as a pure expense because there is a return to that expense.

Humans have better things to do than pretend to be machines.

neuromancer2701··on ESPN Can't Afford to Go on Like This
Yeah, We do SlingTV with the SEC Network addon. Then drop it for Netflix. We ran into some quality issue with Sling so I am hoping that Youtube TV will be in my area by this fall. It would be nice to have lower cost alternatives. It seems that there might be a good selection(3 or 4 choice in this market in the years to come.)

neuromancer2701··on The thriving black market of John Deere tractor hacking
Has this hurt John Deere's sales? It is not like they are the only game in town and the quality of their product has diminished over the last couple of decades compared to alternatives.

We don't need right to mod legislation we need all companies to know that if you do this we will not buy your products.
