netizen-936824··on GRML – a Linux distro for system administrators
Same here, I feel unsafe if I don't have my USB toolkit with me. Long time user of UBCD and a custom Ubuntu images with some block recovery utilities. Shit has saved my ass so many times
netizen-936824··on Is Everything an MLM? (2019)
Because people don't hire other people to handle sales? It has to be an MLM? Something smells off here
netizen-936824··on WunderMap
IBM destroyed the best part of their app too, the widget with a three day graph for temp and precipitation
netizen-936824··on LSD microdosing does not appear to improve mood or cognitive ability: study
They are likely testing individuals
netizen-936824··on Complex systems collapse faster
There are a ton of systems built into living organisms that handle regulation and repair. These systems make us incredibly robust to many different types of insult. We don't build our systems like that, unfortunately humans are incredibly stupid and short sighted so we need to work harder to build robust systems. That's on top of the fact that nature has had such an incredibly long time to build these regulatory and repair systems

Data mobility is a huge problem in the sciences and medical field. For years, companies have been leeching off researchers by trapping them into their proprietary data types which forces them to purchase expensive software licences and prevents sharing due to the need for again, expensive software

This is why open source and open data is important

netizen-936824··on Stoned Ape Theory Linking Evolution to Psychedelic Exposure Revives
Exactly! Both can be true, humans have been around for a while and its not like we stopped evolving at some point
netizen-936824··on Are Taser drones the answer to America's gun violence problem?
Yea we should, but the topic at hand is children being slaughtered in schools with assault rifles
netizen-936824··on Are Taser drones the answer to America's gun violence problem?
Intentional homicide != gun violence
netizen-936824··on Police want your happy childhood pictures to train AI to detect child abuse
Well I can't think of a single way this could go badly!

As long as you have the money and live in an area served by a decent grocer
netizen-936824··on Rust Is Hard, Or: The Misery of Mainstream Programming
Front end or back end? I see nothing wrong with rust on the back end, not sure how it would even work on the front
netizen-936824··on Canada trials decriminalising cocaine, MDMA and other drugs
>Methamphetamine, at high enough doses.

Causes dopamine efflux out of the uptake transporter*

netizen-936824··on In a small Virginia town, citizens review police like Uber drivers
I could argue that police come from the same population as anyone else, therefore a significant portion of police will also be scum
netizen-936824··on East German Doping Victims Die 10 to 12 Years Earlier (2018)
But why is it important to make the distinction

We don't have a distinction for when other animals do things, there's no logical reason to separate humans

netizen-936824··on East German Doping Victims Die 10 to 12 Years Earlier (2018)
People who dope with PEDs use a higher concentration of testosterone than is naturally present. That is what causes the issues
netizen-936824··on Canada trials decriminalising cocaine, MDMA and other drugs
I would argue that MDMA and methamphetamine, while slightly similar in chemical structure, have very different mechanisms of action. Methamphetamine, at high enough doses. This is why dose is important, some recreational doses will cause dopamine efflux from the dopamine uptake transporter but MDMA does not do this

Doses are incredibly portant when discussing the mechanisms of drugs and comparing them because a compound may interact with new and different proteins when the concentration gets high enough. Recreational doses for methamphetamine and cocaine are all over the place partially due to the fact that you can develop tolerance and increase your dose. This doesn't really happen with MDMA as much, and while you can take repeated doses they will rapidly stop working if taken within a small enough time frame. Methamphetamine and cocaine do not have the same tolerance build up

While cocaine is a triple reuptake inhibitor and does interact with serotonin, I don't think its comparable to MDMA

netizen-936824··on Jamie Dimon says ‘brace yourself’ for an economic hurricane caused by Fed
People like wearing blinders because it makes them feel better about wanting to keep the status quo while it actively harms hundreds of millions, if not billions of human lives
netizen-936824··on Canada trials decriminalising cocaine, MDMA and other drugs
What dose is it neurotoxic? How do we know that?

The studies I'm aware of were done on mice, which have a significantly different metabolism than humans. Not to mention there has been no mention of neurotoxicity from the current MAPS studies.

netizen-936824··on Canada trials decriminalising cocaine, MDMA and other drugs
What, exactly, is a single dose of each of those substances?

What makes them equal pharmacologically?

netizen-936824··on Canada trials decriminalising cocaine, MDMA and other drugs
There are countries where drinking in public is fine, why are other drugs different
netizen-936824··on Canada trials decriminalising cocaine, MDMA and other drugs
Haha an NMDA antagonist would be my last choice for problem solving, but I suppose that's what you mean by nothing novel
netizen-936824··on Ask HN: What Is Today's Lead?
Is canola oil bad for you?

Its not, its actually one of the best far sources and its a seed oil

Don't make ridiculous blanket statements, its just plain wrong

netizen-936824··on Ask HN: What Is Today's Lead?
This is a big one. Legalizing and regulating currently illegal drugs would remove most of the harm because nearly all of that harm is from not only adulteration but simply the interaction of people with the "justice" system
netizen-936824··on Ask HN: What Is Today's Lead?
The problem goes a bit deeper than that. Medications are currently being used as a bandaid to cover up the symptoms of our systemic issues which lead to mental health issues. Instead of fixing the systemic issues created by our capitalistic society we just throw medications at our children
netizen-936824··on Ask HN: How do you design experiments on yourself? (health, energy, learning)
First you need to start tracking all variable possible to get your baseline.

Keep in mind that this is not necessarily experimentally valid due to the small sample size of n = 1

This means tracking all nutrition including micro nutrients (such as magnesium), tracking sleep, tracking exercise with breaks load and warmup, tracking sleep and heart rate along with spo2

Literally track everything you can think of. After you have baseline data, start by making one small change at a time (while tracking it of course) and see what happens

netizen-936824··on My students cheated... a lot
None of what you describe is cheating. At all.

You literally just studied and worked ahead. That is not cheating...
