I've been playing the shit out of Human Resource Machine and its sequel-of-sorts 7 Billion Humans recently, they're really fantastic games. Basically ASM with cute graphics.

Haha yeah, PHP-Nuke sites and vBulletin forums, what a duo!
neotek··on Bash IRC Quote Database
When I think back over my childhood, there's nothing I miss more than the way being on the "old" internet felt. The Geocities sites, the webrings, ICQ, Trillian, mIRC scripting, stileproject, the birth and death of E/N sites, image macros, and a million other things that no longer exist and don't have any meaning to the vast majority of internet users today. It was a special club, almost nobody I knew in the real world had any idea that this stuff existed and wouldn't have cared if they did.

And then DALnet was attacked. Days of downtime extended into weeks and eventually months, and by the time it ended DALnet was a shadow of its former self. So many tens of thousands of people just moved on and it was never the same again. I tried moving to efnet as so many did but it didn't have the same vibe. I didn't realise at the time just how much I'd actually lost and how much things were going to change. Man I'd give anything to go back.

neotek··on Twitter tags Trump tweet with fact-checking warning
>If increased voter turnout helps your political party, you are likely to support it. If it hurts your political party, you are likely to be against it.

If you care about democracy in the slightest then you support an increased voter turnout regardless of how it affects your party.

neotek··on Twitter tags Trump tweet with fact-checking warning
>Democrats fight hard to make voting as easy as possible because they are supported by people who are not engaged politically and by people who aren’t invested enough to vote if it takes any effort at all.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Fighting to increase voter turnout is infinitely preferable and authentic to the stated principles of the country than fighting to suppress voter turnout.

neotek··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
Apple does give you the ability to install non-app-store apps (some without tethering), e.g. sideloading or enterprise certificates, although I agree it's not as easy as flipping a switch.

They should also provide a way to downgrade iOS via Xcode for those with a dev account, but that's another story.

neotek··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
I care about security, but that doesn't preclude me from jailbreaking my iphone and running dozens of tweaks that haven't been "vetted by professionals", along with sideloaded apps that haven't been through Apple's vetting process either.

My MacBook runs homebrew which currently lists 84 packages installed plus their dependencies, very few of which will have been professionally vetted, and of the 127 apps in my /Applications folder only a third of them came from the Mac App Store, and I would estimate that a quarter of the others aren't even signed with a paid developer certificate.

I want the apps that I get from Apple directly to be safe. I want to know that when I put my faith in the App Store that I'm not lulling myself into a false sense of security. I want my parents and girlfriend, who are not technical people, to have that same sense of security without them having to learn entire programming languages to vet source code themselves.

The benefits of closed systems don't go away just because you say so.

neotek··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
I, a user, am extremely appreciative of Apple's walled garden. I've never once had to worry that the app I'm downloading is crammed full of malware because I trust that Apple's processes are robust and will work well in 99.999% of all circumstances.
neotek··on In protest of the web{*} bulldozer, a response to websocket port scanning
>Not all sites need it, and given the abuse it’s responsible for, it shouldn’t be permitted unless a user opts in.

And 99.999% of internet users will therefore be trained to blindly click "accept" on any permission popups a website shows them, since outside of HN pretty much everybody loves and appreciates the rich functionality javascript provides.

neotek··on Amazon is handing out 'Thank you' t-shirts to warehouse workers as it cuts pay
What a thoroughly disingenuous comment. Here, let me have a go at emulating your style:

>I'm sorry but this is emotive gibberish.

Are you saying all emotion is gibberish? So you want people to have no emotions whatsoever? You're literally in favour of killing people who display emotions?

neotek··on Zork source code, 1977
Is it possible to play Zork for the first time without a guide or manual of some kind? Could I fire up a copy today and dive straight in or do I need some external information?

Edit: and a follow-up question, is there a good Z-Machine interpreter for the macOS terminal?

neotek··on ICANN board withholds consent for a change of control of the .org registry
>Name a president of the United States (or anywhere, why limit it?) and I'll provide you with a corruption scandal that either they were linked to or happened during their tenancy.

How about I throw it back at you and ask you to name a single former President who has been involved in as many deeply serious scandals as Trump?

Can you even identify any scandals involving a Democrat President that even begin to approach the seriousness of the Stormy Daniels affair, the Ukraine affair, his ties to Russia and the assistance his campaign received from Putin, or any of the literally hundreds of major acts of corruption that have taken place under his watch and often at his explicit direction?

Both sides are not the same. No President in history has ever been as openly and completely corrupt as Trump, no political party has ever demonstrated such contempt for the rule of law and the Constitution. This is not business as usual.

neotek··on ICANN board withholds consent for a change of control of the .org registry
I take your point, I'm referring more to the surrounding milieu that capitalism (as practiced in America, at least) has encouraged and driven and which it seems to have as its ultimate goal for society.

neotek··on Zoom’s Use of Facebook’s SDK in iOS Client
>This is absolutely common. Business will require tracking/authentication/etc, contracts will be signed, developers will implement the provided SDK. Nobody will inspect the data being sent.

That's exactly the point. Zoom says they care deeply about privacy, but their actions demonstrate they don't. Doesn't matter how common it is, or the reasons why it happened, it's proof positive that their statement is untruthful.

We had to remove products containing any and all references to Cuba and Egypt from our Shopify store to avoid PayPal suspending our account. All of the products are American made, produced in the US with local ingredients. For example, a raw flavour compound called “Cubano Style” or an eliquid brand called “The Great Pyramids” (fictional examples but in line with the real products.)

Only the thing was that PayPal wouldn’t actually confirm exactly what was triggering their automated system, we had to infer that ourselves by looking for commonalities between the flagged payments. Even when we identified the problem they refused to give any confirmation at all other than to re-enable our account.

>I don't understand all the negativity and downvotes around Trump's actions.

Because Trump is a moron enabled by a political class that displays outright contempt for the public, who completely mismanaged his government's response to this crisis, mislead the public as to its severity, and deflected responsibility for his actions.

More accurately, they pay extra for the perception of ethical treatment of animals. Chickens on "free range" farms suffer horribly too.
