>And by the way, what other country made a neo-Nazi brigade a part of its army?

Literally all of them, including Russia of course(which has multiple).

80ish k, Linux/DevOps/(bad)Dev. I work 40ish hours, but tbh available close to 24/7 due to small company size, it only really includes out of hours bothers few times a year, but it still does.

EU, full remote.

Been working for a decade-ish now, of which last five years specifically devops.

Russia is famously a country where you can buy full personal dossier of basically anyone for pocket change on dark net, with extremely corrupt law enforcement and literal private militaries operating on its territory.

If one set out to do it without much bureaucracy, it is honestly fairly simple given the resources.

14/88 doesn't make a lot of sense in Russian, doesn't stop it from being plastered all over the place by different militias (Including, but not limited to, Wagner).

I utilized a JavaScript script to delete all of my comments and posts from the past ten years. Despite adding delays between deletions, it took multiple tries over several days because some posts kept reappearing.

I guess I want to emphasize that despite not being 3p client user (I was using old.reddit.com), this situation hurts sites reputation enough to bleed me as an user, enough for me to go through the trouble of actually wiping the account, in stead of leaving my content with me under <deleted>.

It is unlikely they'll feel short-term traffic effects of this, but content quality will suffer for sure, will see how that'll pan out. (From the safety of HN comments, of course).

neoromantique··on EU sends Apple stark warning over USB-C charging on new iPhones
I need different cables to charge my ipad/mac and iPhone.

I can charge basically all (dozens) of my gadgets using usb-c cable, but I still need to carry additional outdated lightning with me to charge the damn phone.

neoromantique··on EU sends Apple stark warning over USB-C charging on new iPhones

Maybe because it takes an eternity to do so?

neoromantique··on Hackers claim vast access to Western Digital systems
You are talking in a thread where OP called such countries “self-proclaimed vermin” and you’re parroting terrible and restrictive opsec practices.

No, it is not okay that many US websites decided to block access from EU instead of adopting a normal privacy policy, it is equally not okay to block access from whole regions of the world based on your prejudice, there are much better solutions.

neoromantique··on Hackers claim vast access to Western Digital systems
1) if your threat model is blocking direct connections from countries you deem unworthy, then I don't even know where to begin unpacking levels of wrong here.

2) proxies exist, many of which are your "first world residential ip address" thanks to IoT in every toaster.

neoromantique··on Hackers claim vast access to Western Digital systems
Extending the line of thought of OP sure is.

It's not $country's fault that you don't use vpn or port knocking.

neoromantique··on Hackers claim vast access to Western Digital systems
Perhaps the takeaway is that you shouldn't leave ports wide open rather than go for xenophobia?
neoromantique··on Hackers claim vast access to Western Digital systems
Internet censorship being self-inflicted by China hints at who benefits from censorship, and it isn't democracies.
neoromantique··on Hackers claim vast access to Western Digital systems
Internet being global and free brings peace and understanding to the world, using it as a weapon is to accept defeat to the totalitarian regimes of yesteryear.

Let the $mostly_defunct_state die off with the rest of them without succumbing to their playbook.

neoromantique··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
I would argue half a thousand of other comments blaming abstract "liberals" for known shortfalls of US policy is the more logical recipient of this remark.
neoromantique··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
I am saying that this is of course a complex issue with many driving forces behind it, but housing crisis is definitively a major part of it.
neoromantique··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
>you’d be hard pressed to find a city that bends over backwards more with social policies

That really doesn't mesh together with the extremely restrictive building code that makes housing crisis so much worse.

neoromantique··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Sometimes it helps to read more than just a slogan before commenting on issues. "defund the police" does not mean that there shouldn't be policing, it means that more attention needs to be brought into preventive measures and community building, so that you don't NEED the excessive police force that helps stirring the violence.
neoromantique··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
>Liberals made their bed, now its time to lie in it.

Crime being rampant in US in stark contrast with ANYWHERE in EU is a good hint that it is actually not because of "dem liberals", but rather a direct consequence of troubled people being left without any support in poverty. They find a way.

Social policies aren't only there to help people in need, they're there to make society as a whole safer.

neoromantique··on AI-enhanced development makes me more ambitious with my projects
I own multiple cars and only one of them is an automatic, and I dread it to be honest. As in I quite often get thoughts about getting another manual instead of it, and arguably this automatic (BMW) I have is the nicest car I own, but transmission really makes it no justice.

To be fair, it is a bit older, so perhaps modern transmissions are significantly better, but any rentals I've driven were even worse, though they were lower class cars.
