neonhomer··on Unnecessary medical care is harming patients physically and financially (2015)
Here's their actual price listing. https://surgerycenterok.com/pricing/

It would be great if the insurance companies would get behind these kinds of prices as this is probably the same as their negotiate rates they pay other surgery centers. Seems like it would be a lot less hassle for them to process.

neonhomer··on Obesity and Overweight Prevalence for the U.S
I remember 10+ years ago how the food at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris was better than most food in the US. It was kind of sad.
neonhomer··on Making tunnels the way you make spaceships
Purely from a business perspective isn't it smarter to use other people's money for such risky projects? Musk certainly didn't become a billionaire by gambling!
neonhomer··on Santa Monica Measured Residents’ Well-Being for Four Years
Sounds a lot better than the 2 seasons we have here in Pittsburgh: summer and winter. Especially with the deep-freeze we've have this winter.
neonhomer··on Community-Owned Fiber Networks: Value Leaders in America
Purely personal, but if my only options in Easton, MD were the municipal and Comcast, I'd probably choose municipal. The 800Mb speed doesn't make up for the fact it's Comcast and their horrible service.
neonhomer··on Racing for Realism
Gollum was definitely a benchmark, maybe even still. Then there's Avatar and Cesar from the Apes movies. But we've yet to get close with actual humans. What started with Final Fantasy we still have that "uncanny valley" in things like Tron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Side note: I can't find an article but I believe Gollum was one of the first times deaf movie-goers could actually read a digital actor's lips.

neonhomer··on Apple Plans Combined iPhone, iPad and Mac Apps to Create One User Experience
I've had many years of experience with iOS and then started working on a macOS app a year or so ago. Everything seemed overly complicated compared to iOS development.

I ended up using a web view and did a lot of front-end work via HTML to save time!

neonhomer··on UFO spotted by US fighter jet pilots
Exactly, it all goes back to the movie Independence Day, he doesn't know everything so he has "plausible deniability!"
neonhomer··on The Great American Share – Sam Altman Interview on Basic Income
What are the pointless jobs you're referring to?
neonhomer··on Extended Validation is Broken
Mobile Safari seems to lack that option, as least as of iOS 10.
neonhomer··on College Presidents Making $1M Rise with Tuition and Student Debt
As others have pointed out, Div I football programs bring in a lot of money for colleges.

The real issue is what is the school spending money on that constantly increases tuition?

neonhomer··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
It's not just telcos. The second-hand details I hear from a major bank makes me cringe everyday. And the main issues tend to be laziness and selfishness.
neonhomer··on Mozilla’s revenue increased significantly in 2016
The one I use all the time is !m for Google Maps.
neonhomer··on Mozilla’s revenue increased significantly in 2016
Can you give an example? I've seen this comment before but never have an issue with DDG.
neonhomer··on Mozilla’s revenue increased significantly in 2016
I was going to ask the same thing. But also why are people still using Google? I've been using DuckDuckGo for years and only use Google when I'm forced to (like in Chrome on iOS).
neonhomer··on The Big Vitamin D Mistake
My lab shows anything over 30 ng/ml as "optimal" (looks like 30 to 100 on the chart). My values the past 2 years have been in the mid 50's.
neonhomer··on The Big Vitamin D Mistake
Anecdotal: I have Chrohns and take 2000 UI Vitamin D everyday. I've been prescribed the lowest dosage anti-inflammatory (Mesalamine) for years and rarely had a flare up. My Vitamin D blood tests always come back in the normal level.
neonhomer··on Infinitown – A WebGL Experiment
The about page says "Models by SimplePoly". So that's probably it.
neonhomer··on The best laptop ever made
Looking at those laptops there's only 1 pre-2016 one currently. I have a 2013 one I got refurbished and it's going to have to last me a long time.
neonhomer··on How sheep with cameras got some tiny islands onto Google Street View
One issue is in the rural areas they delivery mail in their own cars, not USPS mail trucks. But ultimately Google could loan/lease their cars to those drivers.
neonhomer··on Atlantic salmon swim far and wide after fish farm collapse
I've always assumed that "Wild Caught" was used a purpose so the fish could be farmed, but then let loose and caught in the "wild". But maybe it's more difficult to do that.
neonhomer··on New Research on How Ride-Hailing Impacts Travel Behavior
I've always thought bus stops were too frequent outside of downtown Pittsburgh as well. Probably half he stops could be removed and that would speed up bus routes.
neonhomer··on Google's $19B Black Box Is Worrying Investors
I'm one of those people who gladly use an iPhone with mostly Google apps (namely Chrome, Gmail and Maps). My little experience with Android has always been negative.

The only real annoyance with iOS is you can't set Chrome nor Maps as default applications.

neonhomer··on Why many developers still prefer Objective-C to Swift
Exactly. I haven't had any problems switching to Swift for newer projects.
neonhomer··on Announcing Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android, Microsoft Launcher
> Are there really people using Microsoft Edge out there? I mean, because they want to, not because they have to?

I have the exact sentiment with Safari. I'm on an Macbook Pro and iPhone and still use Chrome everywhere.

neonhomer··on Ask HN: Is Vagrant dead or dated? Do people still use it?
I've also tried Docker 2 different times and couldn't get the demos working on my Macbook Pro. And by now I have a pretty good Vagrantfile that works on both Mac and Windows well.
neonhomer··on Atlassian launches Stride, its Slack competitor
I'm to the point now where I just leave the Slack web client open as a tab in Chrome. It works well for me and I still get notifications when I need them.

The best part is I can use the back button to go to previously viewed rooms/messages.

neonhomer··on When the Rich Said No to Getting Richer
> If your using money to keep score your probably using the wrong system to keep score.

I think another side of the problem is 99% of people who are not rich are using the same score and since they are "losing" they hate the rich. If we all stop using money as the score we'd all be better off.

neonhomer··on The Web in 2050
It's what plants crave!
neonhomer··on ‘Instantly rechargeable’ battery could change the future of electric automobiles
> This is only true for apartment dwellers (for now). People who live in houses typically charge at home.

What about people who only have street parking without a driveway or garage?
