Xen prevents modifying ACPI data.

It also passes obvious "Xen emulated drive", and similar for all hardware interfaces.

Passes CPUID.

Can't stop any of this with Qubes/Xen. But is trivial with Proxmox/KVM.

Honestly, I wish there was a Qubes/KVM variant. It would fix every complaint, and enable running potentially malicious software (MS windows) and lie to it regarding hardware interfaces.

nekusar··on Linux Zoom client proactively reading everything written to X11 clipboard
I dumped it after realizing Xen does its damndest in preventing you from hiding VM attributes from Guest OSes.

Proxmox uses KVM, and is easy to configure a VM to make the guest think it's on bare metal.

In the proprietary software space, a LOT of things run badly or refuse to run, or license stupidity with a guest OS. So for me, spoofing bare metal is an essential part of running ilk like Windows and proprietary apps. And also, school remote testing garbage.

nekusar··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
Yep.

And the pay for these things is "access to 500+ TB Jellyfin-like movie services for free"

Of course, it's all pirated out of country. And the pay is being a residential proxy.

And piracy being the only way to actually own, I'm not imaging this will stop anytime soon.

I've yet to find anybody in mental health profession who is "good", aside psychiatrists and their drug prescriptions. And that's only cause of gatekeeping drugs, not because they're good either.

The worst problem with mental health care is that there is no "you're better" metric. There is if your bone breaks and heal. There is for surgery of various things. But mental health seems to follow Parkinson's Law, and expands to the number of sessions available, whether it helps or not. And at X00$/session, yeah gets costly quick.

So if something trained on all psychiatric literature costs $20/month subscription, that's a substitute therapist. Whether it's clinically trained or not.

nekusar··on Show HN: The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
And Jellyfin for the server.

And whatever leftover storage you have.

And PIA or Proton for a port forwardable VPN.

And https://github.com/halcyon-video/halcyon-video for that real Blockbuster experience.

nekusar··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
This whole story you tell is the same for lots of places. It's the tell of a failing state who cannot provide for their people.

Hard/bad/no jobs? People will steal. And the thefts may cost $3000 to replace, but $300 in theft goods.

And even if you have a good job, inflation and US citizens getting fucked over by trump tariffs and inflation makes every year that much harder.

And when you KNOW the folks at the top (either party) are cheating, have always cheated, and will continue to do so - why the hell should I follow the law? It can be tax cheating, or copyright infringement, cutting down Flock (YC17) scameras, or more.

And when you KNOW you don't have any upward mobility and are stuck socioeconomically, well, it leads to what you see.

If we look at China, they have a whole different set of problems. The simpletons here will just bemoan 'Communist China' and are stuck in a McCarthyism mindset.

Cry me alligator tears.

It's been years since Microsoft has went from OS to advert ridden surveillance OS.

If you have been abused by Microsoft for years, recognize the abusive actions against you, know you have Linux alternatives, and you still choose abuse... Well, this is a YOU problem.

You can choose Linux. Works super well these days. But this is a YOU problem if you keep choosing MS Windows and their ongoing abuse and enshittification.

That's where Bypass Paywalls Free Firefox plugin lives.

Its also where a whole lot of DRM bypass tools for Netflix etm also live.

nekusar··on Project Xanadu: Even More Hindsight (2025)
Can you not think in first, second or third derivative actions with a system that bakes in micropayments at the deepest infrastructure level?

Should people be able to get paid for content they made? Sure. But we have that already - copyright. And it's also already so askew to the largest companies. The small folk are ALREADY squeezed out.

I could imagine trap Xanadu-pages that whose goal is to charge for garbage. Cents at a time, just under whatever limits you have on the micropayment lever. But a page could drain dollars. And there'd be millions of them. Traps everywhere.

Wait, so you can generate garbage content, link it everywhere? Yeah the LLM in a Xanadu system would create billion-page webs that *appear* useful, but whose only goal is 'drain your wallet'. And pages can be generated faster than you can block.

Xanadu also completely upends the idea of public domain - republish and start that money counter going! Republish republish republish. Or steal your content, republish, and rake in the microtransactions. Again, I can do it faster than you can catch me.

This whole Xanadu garbage is predicated upon the root idea that only monied people should have the right to read and access content. I am glad it is in the dumpster of dead technologies. Frankly, all libertarian extreme technologies need to be destroyed.

nekusar··on Scientists Find Worms in Almost Every Fish in a Tuna Haul – 96% Were Infected
So what makes raw fish safe is that the fish is froze at a temp for a period of time. Its different depending on temp and duration.

But the cold kills the parasites. Its why "sashimi grade fish" is safe.

nekusar··on Project Xanadu: Even More Hindsight (2025)
Im completely glad Xanadu died.

Their grandiose plan was to install microtransactions on EVERYTHING, so that even hitting a simple webpage could be $10 to read. This is the libertarian utopia, where only the rich can read and learn.

It would have been the death knell for communication if every word had a bloody pricetag.

So good fucking riddance. I hope Xanadu stays in the trash-heap of history.

nekusar··on The Raspberry Pi Interactive Timeline · 2006–2026
Yep absolutely works as well. Was just on my phone and gave an example.

But arduino = 5v logic, and esp = 3.3v logic.

Also ESP does have a lot higher base load than a atmega chip. You can do tricks to get those down to microwatts.

nekusar··on Authorization terminology is a mess: Let's fix it
Are you fixing it at the IETF and RFC level, or is this just another way to say "BUY OUR SHIT AND IT TOTALLLY SOLVES EVERYTHING!!!!11"
nekusar··on The Raspberry Pi Interactive Timeline · 2006–2026
Yeah, they lost the narrative. Hard.

These days I can buy a old FB marketplace or Craigslist laptop and get EVERYTHING in 1. Maybe have to buy a new battery. Usually $100-150.

If I need IO for controlling sensors and things, there's clone Arduino nanos for $5 from CN or $10 from US. And if anything burns out, it's a simple replace.

I've been done with RPi for a while now.

nekusar··on EFF to Courts: Don't Rewrite Copyright over AI Hype
Im OK with limited forms of copyright. But the problem is that copyright business interests will ALWAYS pervert the original agreed-upon rules to their benefit.

Now something we saw that does work with audio, is statutory licensing. That rule alone allows spotify to be made. And thats also why a spotify-for-video cant be.

Thats why a local Jellyfin with 30TB of videos is better than all US based streaming services combined. Nobody is *legally* able to put a complete video library and pay access fees to relevent rightsholders.

Fuck you, slop bot.

Guess I found the trap phrases.

nekusar··on European Commission Revives Push for Encryption Backdoors in ProtectEU Strategy
I came from the oldschool cypherpunk cryptogeeks when it meant secure comms and not shitcoin.

There was a subset of us who thought that encryption wasn't the final goal, but steganography was needed to HIDE the encrypted comms. Else simple encryption could be attacked legally, or with a crowbar.

And with every bloody week a large government is "let's backdoor encryption haha" its high time to really develop stego that can overlay on top of text, pictures, audio, and video. Only then can they play fuck-fuck games about spying on our comms, and they'll see innocuous banter - but its really stego'd comms overlay.

nekusar··on Get your Windows license refund
Completely true, that. Ive seen exactly as you said with 4 friends of mine when I helped them go over to Linux. On the Win11 side, they didnt even KNOW that they clicked a button to sync their files to some cloudshit account (Onedrive). There's no proof either way, but their files were exfil'd.

But with the horrendous performance and scam behavior, Ive heelped others to Linux to really good effect.

Just theres that 1 person who *needed* Windows and all the abusiv behaviors it inflicts. It was more akin to "Executives dont get fired for recommending IBM/Microsoft", and a utter refusal to try something better. Theyve been a friend for 2 decades, so I gave them the warning, but did help them.

nekusar··on Get your Windows license refund
I bought a pack of Win10 pro keys for $5 a key. Gray market site, but 100% legit.

The few times I needed a key, it worked the first time. And for a friend who needed Win11, the upgrade from 10 Pro to 11 worked first time.

I'd never pay more than $5 per Windows key. But I prefer Linux instead.

nekusar··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
And NOT a damned thing will be done to punish the administration for these obvious illegal actions.

And they'll continue to do so, because it takes months to unwind this shit, and the damage was done immediately.

nekusar··on Tell HN: PayPal blocks GrapheneOS
Uh, no. Shaming a "take" is just tone policing. Owners should own the hardware along with the software both.

Its only since the smartphone era (2008) with locked down shit devices has this view changed. And people challenging this are somehow defective, tone policed, shamed, or likewise.

GrapheneOS users are treated as 'rooted phones', at the exact same time tools that would attack and prevent corporate surveillance (xprivacy, etc) are withheld cause they would involve root.

Even this thread is full of a lot of anti-owner hand wavey shit that amounts to 'we don't trust our users, and fork you'. https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/18953-why-the-stigma-agains...

nekusar··on Tell HN: PayPal blocks GrapheneOS
Yep, GrapheneOS is anti-user-freedom.

They do their damndest to prevent owners from having full control of their property, over claims of 'insecurity'.

And complaints of this nature get inane drivel responses of "lol just fork Graphene"
