nekusar··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Id agree. Ive dealt with bullies like them before. Doesnt matter what proof you pull out of your ass. You're always wrong, no matter what you say. Reminds me of Upton Sinclair's quote "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it", but more akin to political positions, and active refusal and rebuttal of anything said in opposition to their political view.

I was making a social point that "average TV shows showing families" is a rough reflection of the current happenstance of the age in which they were made. Its not a "proof" or whatever governmental numbers were smoothed over or otherwise faked to make US households look healthier or better.

> The average household needs to work more hours per week to afford the same things.

A weirdness ive seen.. Entertainment equipment like TVs, game consoles, cell phones, and such are cheap compared to the 1970's through early 2000's. Used to be entertainment was EXPENSIVE. But housing? Our house, in the Midwest, in early 2000s, sold for $160k. We bought it in 2022 for $375k. And on GIS, i see the same exact trend everywhere in my county. Other counties that we looked at moving to, similar. Same story as far as I looked.

Also, federal minimum wage has kept the same for what, since 2007? Union participation has plummeted to like 15%. Workers work longer for less money. Can barely afford a shitty apartment (too small to host parties), BUT that $400 70" TV with a game console is cheap.. and it helps you forget poverty and loneliness with artificial plenty (in game), and company (remotely, on a game).

> I wonder what could've happened in the 80's to cause this?

Reagan, Mergers and Acquisitions crisis (and resulting venture capital buying and shredding companies en masse now), stagnating wages, heavy pushing of "Right to Work" laws, and all of this trickle-down that makes me think I'm just a urinal.

nekusar··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
My guesses:

1. Everything costs more. A lot more.

2. Wages have stagnated for decades, unless you're in that magical IT job.

3. It's now a 2 wage earner setup to afford rent or mortgage. And smaller and less hostable residences.

4. The lower your income, the worse your schedule for planning anything. Same with friends.

5. Self-entertainment is a lot cheaper.

Basically, capitalism has squeezed out being able to afford parties, and the time commitment away from "hustling".

Even with 1995-ish, we had Married with Children, The Simpsons, Seinfeld, and Friends. All these show apartments or houses that a single worker could afford, and fund house/apartment parties. And this is a single person paying for housing.

Sure, those are fictions for TV, but it also shows just how normal and common it was, that low/middle income folks had lots of options and good amount of time. That's just no longer true for most Americans.

nekusar··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
The whole social media and under-18 argument isn't a problem with all social media.

Its a problem with for-profit social media. The companies use gamification to addict and create terrible trends for everyone involved.

Mastodon, peertube, lemmy, and federated media doesn't do any of these gamblification, gamification, psychological attacks, and more.

To be fair, the techniques should be banned by the FTC for deceptive practices, for everyone. But the kids angle is what's being gravitated towards.

nekusar··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
The problem is for-profit corporate social media.

Fediverse has never hired thousands of psychologists to gamify everything.

Fediverse hasn't added adverts to sell really seedy or blatantly illegal products.

Fediverse hasn't engaged in genocide in Myanmar or Rohinga, or anywhere else.

Fediverse doesn't run mass psychology experiments on unsuspecting users.

But Facebook/Meta, X, and others definitely have.

Edit: for those of you who -1'ed it, where am I wrong?

nekusar··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
> Because the bottom tier of teachers have done wrong, it invalidates the whole system?

Potentially, yes. Doubly so when those terrible teachers are kept in those roles year after year. The whole system defends and backs these teachers, even knowing they create horrible outcomes and dread for everyone.

> We all have a story of a favorite teacher, someone who inspired through story, who asked more from us, even when ourselves didn’t believe we’d achieve.

Nope. We all dont. It also depends on if you went to a "good public school" or a "bad public school", or rather worse or well funded.

> Violence is not acceptable, verbal and physical.

True. But saying bad words is *not* violence. However threatening violence is absolutely actionable.

> Even if their home life is a train wreck. It can be an explanation, but not a justification.

Again, this is looking at individual choices over what im arguing as a system based failure. The whole way the system is constructed is a failure to students and teachers both.

Look at how schools are funded. Property tax. Means poor property locations get shittier schools, worse teachers, low funded classrooms. And this also shows the students' housing is also likely just as poor. Food insecurity, whole lot of trickle down poverty effects. I came from a poor funded rural school. I had no choice in that matter.

nekusar··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
> The American Psychological Association completed three National surveys in which the findings reveal high rates of verbal/threatening (e.g., verbal attacks, verbal threats, sexual harassment, intimidation, public humiliation, bullying)

Cry me a river. Public schools pride themselves on furthering extreme authoritarianism, while being in a country that praises on being a constitutional democratic republic.

And guess what, public schools share striking similarities to that other place where authoritarianism reigns supreme - prisons. And when you treat the inmates/students like that, with capricious rules, 0-tolerence (0-thought) policies, and more, the inmates absolutely respond back.

And "verbal attacks", oh noes, whatsoever shall we do? They said a bad word!

And regarding "public humiliation", I remember quite a few middle and high school teachers who used public humiliation TOWARDS students as a way to shame them. Even remember a health class where the asshole teacher would put down each test and loudly say the grade and some snide remark.

I also remember teachers *thieving* from students random "distracting objects". Of course, those class/school rules are just arbitrary principal bullshit. And somehow absolves thievery.

Now, the whole physical violence and threats of physical violence, that's a whole different problem. But again, that's' caused in part by the prison-nature of current schools. Honestly, im surprised there isnt more violence towards teachers.

Personal choices:

"I don't eat meat."

"I won't have an abortion."

"I pray 5x a day."

"I won't be homosexual."

Versus religious coersion of:

"You cannot eat meat."

"You cannot have an abortion."

"You must pray 5x a day."

"You cannot be homosexual."

Religious types are never happy in doing only what they say and believe - they want to force these views on others, whether they like it or not. I've seen what religious imperialism does. These choices are not personal and will never be personal.

Worse yet, when you allow SOME types of hate (against women and against homosexuals), it opens the door for other hate. This is Catholic teachings, so are non-Catholics welcome? How about Jews? Moslems? How about pagans and witches? Are bisexuals welcome, since they are half-homosexual?

When you refuse to draw the line at hate, but draw it where you find it convenient, you leave the door open for hate to sneak in everywhere, under the guise of tolerating intolerance.

I put my foot down at any form of hate. Attending, paying, or otherwise supporting this event is tacit acceptance that his form of hate is acceptable.

"Smart" is stupid. It's primarily just a way to tie subscription shit and advertisements, and lock in DRM (and laws protecting DRM) on what used to be perfectly fine hardware.

"Smart" that I can back is simple sensor acquisition over open protocols. I would appreciate being able to MONITOR my fridge/freezer/stove/oven/washer/dryer. Changing shit over those connections is not needed, nor wanted.

And when the victim doesn't do reasonable actions to safeguard, yes, they are also partially responsible.

If I hooked up a whole server infrastructure, made it possible to remote in to anything as root, no firewalls, no WAF, and security was an afterthought, I would still be responsible for bad actions not becoming with standard and acceptable security.

Even if the hackers shouldnt be hacking, I still did it wrong. I'm still partially responsible.

nekusar··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
Well, what part do you disagree with?

1. Caring about the company when you are a worker and not owner?

2. Companies will throw away/layoff people with no notice?

3. Work slowage (work-to-rule) as a counter to low/no pay raises in accordance to general inflation

4. Invest emotional and physical labor in ventures you gain completely out of

nekusar··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
And unless you have ownership level stake in the company, you *shouldnt* care about what happens downstream of selling labor to the company. Yes, I highly recommend 8 and skate.

Ive seen soooo many people burnt out, or "ive given years to the company and i got hit with layoffs", or "$200 software would have saved $1000000 when I brought it up to them". And companies will throw you away the MOMENT your usefulness is gone, even if just perceived. So, use them just as much as they use you.

And that idea of slacker is ALSO a way to generate more money for you, by slyly withholding or slowing work. I didnt get my paltry 3% last year. Inflation up 15% or whatever stupid number. But I can control how much work I do, so my effective wage/hour stays with inflation.

Save your caring for your personal projects, nonprofits you help at, your and family/friends labor you help with.

nekusar··on Teen Social Media Bans Miss the Point
Explain to the audience the nature of "personhood" of Meta(Facebook), Alphabet(Google), etm.

Parents aren't hiring thousands of behavioral psychologists to assail the public with weaponized psychology. Parents aren't running mass exploitation via emotional attacks (targeting pregnancy, anorexia, mental illness, depression, etc). Parents never encouraged or helped the genocidalists in the Rohinga genocide.

But.... You blame parents. Standard capitalist response of calling everything a 'personal choice'.

nekusar··on Teen Social Media Bans Miss the Point
The big problem with these "social media child bans", is that the capitalistic extreme-addictive experience IS harming everyone. Not just children.

What should have been was what Cory Doctorow has pushed - forced open API integration. From there you can make your own clients, only see friends, de-gamify, chronological algorithm, etc.

But banning children? That's a fools game. But easy for the votes, cause politicians are attacking a population who can't vote, and are disenfranchised by default.

nekusar··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
You have a strong point, and it's probably not the one you want to make.

Non-violent (peaceful, loud, signs) protesting does little to nothing. Historically speaking, what does work is violence, and a lot of it.

Even in the USA, our own labor battles were effectively wars, with the US military fighting against the people. It's where the Pinkertons were created. And it was bloody as hell, until FDR had some sense in making the NLRB to *curb the violence* with peaceful grievances.

When those in power forget the peaceful paths were a compromise, don't be too surprised when violence rears its ugly head.

This is how you get healthcare CEOs gunned down, or ol Scam Altman's house firebombed, or city council person get their house shot up after voting for a data center, or Flocks (YC17) getting destroyed en masse.

I'm just sitting here. And it definitely is getting worse and worse, for everyone. And some people, when you corner them, do unimaginable things.

nekusar··on Who Aligns the Aligners?
An abliterated locally ran model is aligned with whatever I ask it, given the never-published nature of what these things are trained on. BUT if I ask an abliterated model a question, it will respond and NOT give a refusal.

However, take a US model, and ask it a question the *company* doesnt want you to ask, and it refuses on behalf of the company. We can be mealy-mouth about "alignment", but this is just corporate censorship with a token-pricetag of refusal or silent model degradation.

Refusals and degradation should not be charged, and should be clear to the user. But that doesnt happen. Number must always go up, even when silently censoring.

Chinese models? Just ask about Tibet, democracy, Winnie the Pooh, Tienanmen Square, grass mud horse (cao ni ma - or fuck your mother), or other government AND corporate censorship happening there too.

I'd be happier if H1B's (read: employment slavery) was completely redone and not tied to a single sponsor company, or gotten rid of completely.

Its fraud all the way down every where I look.

nekusar··on Who Aligns the Aligners?
Alignment is just a 1984-esque way of saying "censorship".

And this censorship isn't a defined list of things not to discuss, but instead a feels-based censorship based on the 'ethics' of for-profit AI companies who have absolutely no issues with massive for-profit piracy.

And we are somehow supposed to trust their "ethics"?! Hardly!

That's one reason I run my own.
