nekojima··on Sen. McCaskill to FAA Chief: Fix Electronic Device Rules or Face Legislation
I was on a plane that had to make a very sudden emergency landing. There was no time for items to be anything but tucked into the back of the seat or beside you, before we had to duck our heads down. The main injuries sustained were from people who hadn't done up their seat belts or from shock/panic. There were a few newspapers and magazines floating around, the odd book and small camera too.

So if there is another emergency and potentially free-floating items are flying through the air within the cabin, I'm far happier being hit in the head by a paperback novel, than I am an e-reader. Let alone a mobile or laptop.

nekojima··on California School District Owes $1 Billion On $100 Million Loan
If the pension funds invest in the CAB issues, that might help solve the pension funding shortfall. :-/
nekojima··on Map: The most and least corrupt countries in the world
If they were one country, NZ'ers wouldn't be so offended (real or faked) that you called them Australians. :-D
nekojima··on Map: The most and least corrupt countries in the world
At least in Canada cases of corruption and collusion can be publicly aired, criminal cases launched, and the most corrupt/dishonest politicians removed. There are at least two countries in the top 15 I know from first-hand experience where this is not occurring. There is direct interference and collusion on a huge scale in the economy by politicians, their families, and friends. Transparency International does not generally include this in their assessment, unless their are other market distorting factors, such as outright bribery or use of the judiciary for economic reasons, not just political.
nekojima··on Announcing Photo Check Deposit
When I saw the title of the posting, I initially thought it was related to checking photographs. :-/
nekojima··on Announcing Photo Check Deposit
I didn't realize cheques (checks) were still widely being used. I haven't written a cheque in almost ten years, either personal or business. We've received a few cheques from large companies, but very rarely.
nekojima··on Federal officials take down 132 websites in 'Cyber Monday' crackdown
What about those folks who bought from these sites in the preceding days and weeks before this action was taken? Shouldn't sites be taken down as found, instead of waiting for a "special" day, if they allegedly violate laws.
nekojima··on Regulators Demanding Uber Price Increase to $75 Minimum in Vancouver
Would a long-term promotional deal for a $10-40 gift certificate to Indigo, Marks, BestBuy or somewhere else (or a debit card) of the customer's choice be a possibility to overcome this issue?
nekojima··on Student Suspended for Refusing to Wear a School-Issued RFID Tracker
Not wearing an RFID badge later in life will severely restrict this student's employment prospects, as they are very prevalent in many workplaces now. Would be interesting to know if her parents have to wear RFID badges where they work.
nekojima··on Paypal Bans Usenet Providers Over Piracy Concerns
In the last two or three months I've found it increasingly difficult to find new postings under their titles on my Usenet provider. I wasn't sure initially if it was their search function that was broken/corrupted, but asking Helpdesk doesn't help when they cut you off if you ask for assistance on copyrighted material. Finding another term that doesn't give replies but that should be there, as an alternative, is rather tough.
nekojima··on Paypal Bans Usenet Providers Over Piracy Concerns
While my credit card company and bank allow me to purchase online without the intrusion and privacy violations that PayPal regularly insists on, I continue to see no reason to use PayPal.
nekojima··on Kickstarter sued over 3D Systems' printer patent
Formlabs 'by promoting the Form 1 printer had caused "immediate and irreparable injury and damage to 3D Systems".'

Conveniently both Formlabs and 3D Systems have a 3D printer that might be able to replace that damage.

nekojima··on How Nintendo DRM trapped $400 of downloaded games on my failing Wii
It is because of this licensing arrangement with Steam that I have not purchased a single game from them where I did not get at least a 75% discount off the normal sales price. I don't care if I have to wait, like I did when I finally purchased a game last week for 75% off after waiting a year for a sale, but since I don't own a copy (physical, transferable & with DRM) of the game, I don't see the point of paying full price to Steam or any other games provider.
nekojima··on Unbelievable: The IDF Has Gamified Its War Blog
This could be a helpful way for the IDF to track Hamas and other Palestinian users and to see what they are most interested in reading about. Either as a way to target them electronically, or by other means (covertly for exploitation or recruitment, not by missiles).

Also might be humourous to know how many Hamas operatives or supporters have reached IDF "Research Officer" rank too.

nekojima··on Why aren't we all using Japanese toilets?
There was a considerable increase in the number of dwellings in Japan with flush toilets from 45.9% in 1978 to 83.0% in 1998. This likely led to an increased acceptance of the new style of toilets because the North American & Western European style flush-toilets were not as prevalent in the home at the time and so an in-grained cultural use was not the determining factor for choosing new toilet styles.

* Stats from Statistics Bureau, Japan.

nekojima··on HN saved us millions; we need to change our name
That would explain why I thought most of the early words were too common and not unique enough.
nekojima··on HN saved us millions; we need to change our name
The top of the outerwear list gave, to me, quite horrible suggestions. Looking at the very bottom of the list though, provided much better suggestions such as AtlasPeakOuterwear or OpenPlanOuterwear (no limits with open plan).
nekojima··on The Best Groupon Deal Ever: 86.2% Off On GRPN at NASDAQ

The rather famous 'Top Gear tries to kill a Toyota Hilux'.

The part when the Hilux goes in the English Channel (which is salt water).

nekojima··on Apple blocks Siri's prostitute-finder function
I've never had problems in Osaka.

Though the mamasans and bar girls in WanChai in Hong Kong can be quite aggressive. Leave a hand for them to grab and you'll be yanked into the bar very quickly!!

nekojima··on Apple blocks Siri's prostitute-finder function
I've been going to China for more than a decade and lived there for a while too. I use the opportunities to practice my "street" Chinese and try to understand rural dialects. But I've never been taken in by any of the scams or folks coming up to me on the street. Worse is knowingly overpaying by 10-30rmb when buying something because I didn't want to haggle for ages.

I even take taxis from the taxi rank at the airport or train/bus station(instead of touts in the terminal/station), make a point of photographing or writing down the license plate number and pretending to text it to someone, so they know scamming or stealing from me won't work as well. Never really had a problem and try to make a game out of it, so its less of a chore.

nekojima··on Apple blocks Siri's prostitute-finder function
If you're in China and are having finding prostitutes, you haven't either walked through you hotel lobby, onto a main shopping street, or really been anywhere. They are quite literally everywhere in the cities and larger towns.

I can not think of a single day, except deep in the mountainous countryside, where I have not been approached by women selling themselves, or guys trying to sell me 'sexy lady massage'. Even in the mountains we're seen roadside brothels.

If the search feature was to find quality prostitutes, then that's quite probably another issue and for some a positive development.

nekojima··on Poll: Should we push the YC deadline back by a day because of the storm?
It may not be an epiphany, but watching just a few seconds of the news coverage I thought of the number of times many of those things had happened to NYC in summer disaster movies.

If I had cameras, boats/kayaks, a few actors & friends to help out, shoot overnight on the deserted river roads, a few lines of dialogue and a rough idea for a story, I'd be out there trying to shoot with big-budget backgrounds that would normally cost tens of millions in sound stages or post-production. Though since I'm currently in Toronto, can't really do it.

If I'd been able to plan (or had the idea a few days ago to be able to plan and know in advance how it would likely look), for perhaps $10-20k (mostly for rented boats, cameras and bail money) could have had a semi-decent looking disaster movie or a good short film. Getting the moment the lights went out from some high vantage points & down on the water would have been amazing too.

nekojima··on The Internet is experiencing severe outages across North American and Asia
What would seemingly be my ISP's router is mentioned here as having 100% packet loss for the last 24 hours. I had great speeds yesterday and the last few hours, been downloading large files.

Perhaps I'm just lucky? Or there is issue with how this is reporting or there is more than one router that everyone else on my ISP uses.

Which was a ripoff of the classic mid-1990s SimFarm.
nekojima··on Smart license plate frame that prevents you from getting a ticket
This product would be handy on toll roads that use cameras to bill you. Like the 407 in Ontario.

My somewhat educated guess is that the product would very likely be illegal because the flashes intentionally obscure the license plate from being recorded and that is the part of the laws in most states, provinces and countries this falls foul of. Most of the laws are written in such a way to say that any attempt to obscure the license plate is illegal. That is usually meant to suggest mud, various coverings and so on, but can depending on the specific law, mean any attempt by you the owner or driver of the vehicle to obscure in anyway, the recording of the license plate by authorized agencies or companies.

As well, I'd generally think a 6-0 team should be ranked above a 6-1 team, does not currently appear that way.

There is a high correlation in the NFL between turnover margin and winning.
