neilsimp1··on Thunderbird in 2019
Honestly, I thought I liked Outlook on Windows until I gave Thunderbird a try. It's just so much faster.
neilsimp1··on Epic Games banked a $3B profit in 2018
Is anybody else bummed how Fortnite's success has drawn development away from the new Unreal Tournament? I don't care about Fortnite, I just want UT to continue to be updated. I don't think it's had an update since June.
neilsimp1··on Ask HN: Music tech, what's next?
Oh, sure. That thing would have to be a tank to survive gigging.
neilsimp1··on Ask HN: Music tech, what's next?
You mentioned Spotify, which is tech for music streaming. I saw this and remembered an idea my old bandmates and I came up with once. I'm going to share it anyways, even though it's more about music performance than streaming.

Has anyone ever used an Fractal Axe-FX or Kemper or any other amp modeler? If not, it's essentially a digital replacement of tube amp technology, with the capability of modelling a whole bunch of guitar amps and effects. We dreamed up the idea of having one device like this, but capable of handling the whole band. Essentially, we'd want a small but powerful PC, running a custom Linux distro built for audio processing, with enough inputs for several instruments. The machine should be able to record, have outputs to plug into PA, have effects processing, etc. The technology for all of this already exists, it just needs to be combined into one box.

Maybe this is a little bit off-topic for this thread, but I still think this would be a great idea for any recording/performing band.

neilsimp1··on US Senate Passes Sweeping Criminal Justice Reform Bill
My guess is because the rules were written by men without any input from women.
neilsimp1··on Choose Firefox Now, or Later You Won't Get a Choice (2014)
I've seen the comment here on HN and a few other sites in the past few days - are there sites out there that don't work in Firefox, but do work in Chrome?

Like, I'm aware of a few CSS properties that work in Chrome but not FF, but I don't think I've ever come across a site that doesn't look or work completely fine in FF.

The only exception to this that I can think of is Google Earth, which I'm pretty sure you can open inside of Chrome. I've always used the desktop app for that though so I'm not sure.

neilsimp1··on Show HN: I'm 17 and I created a Forth interpreter for the TI-84+ calculator
I remember writing a text adventure game on my TI 83+ in high school, thinking I was a hacker extraordinaire. In reality it was just a bunch of If and Print statements.

What you did is truly incredible.

neilsimp1··on Best hosting 2018?
Seconded. Perfect for static sites or small-to-medium PHP sites.
neilsimp1··on NES.css: 8-bit style CSS framework
<i> seems to have been re-purposed to mean icon at some point. Nowadays, I only ever see it as an icon, never for italics.
neilsimp1··on Ask HN: Why is Atom a whopping 845 MB on my Mac?
I think developers probably tree-shake the HTML/CSS/JS that is running inside of Electron, but tree-shaking all of Chromium can't be the easiest thing to do. Not that I disagree with you, that should be a part of the Electron publishing/packaging step.
neilsimp1··on Ask HN: If I use GSuite does Google mine my data for their own purposes?
I'd be very surprised if Google wasn't doing that with your data. It's their business model.
neilsimp1··on What's new in C# 8
I'm looking at this as well. I'm confused about the word `figure` here. It looks like it's a keyword for this new type of pattern matching switch. but the word `figure` itself seems unneeded.
neilsimp1··on With Proton and Steam Play, many Windows games now work on Linux
DOSBox? ScummVM? Depending one what age you're talking, those games should work fine on either OS really.
neilsimp1··on Blazor, a framework for browser-based .NET apps using WebAssembly [video]
That didn't really remove language features though. That removed framework features.
neilsimp1··on MacOS 10.14 Mojave Reviewed
I've never owned an Apple anything and yet I swear I still find .DS_Store files on my Windows/Linux machines from time to time.
neilsimp1··on Microsoft intercepting Firefox, Chrome installation on Windows 10 Insider build
To be fair, Ubuntu does send usage data to Canonical, unlike some other distros. Whether or not that counts as "spying" to you is another question.
neilsimp1··on Optical fibre made in orbit should be better than the terrestrial sort
Seconded. The main character came off a lot like Mark Watney from The Martian, but what a great, quick read Artemis was.
neilsimp1··on Firefox about:config privacy settings
I disagree, but I don't see why you were downvoted.
neilsimp1··on Removing jQuery from GitHub.com front end
I've never used Flow, but that sounds the same as `--noImplicitAny` or `--strict` in TypeScript.
neilsimp1··on Unpatched routers being used to build vast proxy army, spy on networks
I've been thinking of getting a Pi-Hole for a while, but also have a router running OpenWRT. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to using a Pi-Hole vs. using an AdBlock package on the router?
neilsimp1··on Breakout implemented in JavaScript in a PDF
I wish I could remember where I read this line, but it's lost on me. "We want to hire someone who rewrote Quake to render it's graphics in ASCII, just for the fun of it." (I'm sure I mangled the quote, too.)

I love this, it's hacking for hacking's sake.

neilsimp1··on Anbox – A container-based approach to boot full Android on a regular Linux
> and app installation instructions are nowhere to be found

https://github.com/anbox/anbox/blob/master/docs/install.md ??

Or do you mean for installing Android apps?

neilsimp1··on Inside the Trump Administration’s Secret War on Weed
Not saying that you're wrong, but let's say that heroin is legal starting tomorrow. Do you go out and buy some? Do your friends/family/coworkers? I'm not so sure that the only people that would go buy it legally would be the people already buying it illegally.
neilsimp1··on Coffee delivery drone patented by IBM
You're not alone, my mind went here immediately too. Although I think my word association game response to the word "patent" at this point is always going to be "troll".
neilsimp1··on Bing.com now runs on .NET Core
It is, but I wonder what they're measuring on Y-axis. I just says `(actual values omitted)`.
neilsimp1··on What are your favorite personal blogs?
I just wish it was updated more often.
neilsimp1··on Ask HN: Which cloud behemoth is best for individual learning?
Eh, Azure's UI isn't much better. I mean, I really do like Azure for the most part, but I feel like every time I go into the Azure portal online (every few months) I need to Google how to find something because it got moved around on me. And half of the results I find are out of date.
neilsimp1··on Ask HN: Which self-hosted solutions are you using?
Check out OpenMediaVault, I'm using it on a low-powered NAS after seeing the requirements fro FreeNAS.

neilsimp1··on Is WebAssembly the Return of Java Applets and Flash?
I'd still complain. I remember supporting a Java plugin application that was incredibly slow and beyond buggy. Then again, limiting the scope to only what JavaScript could already do could have helped avoid those issues to begin with.
neilsimp1··on GitHub After Microsoft
Microsoft does not own GitHub yet, so all of these points are for GitHub before Microsoft.
