necrecious··on Ask HN: Why is there no competitor to the iPod Touch?
iPod Touch is really interesting from an educational perspective. I am working with two different school districts who are using iPod Touches instead of netbooks.

The amount of functionality you get for the price is amazing. The lockdown nature of Apple products is actually a benefit in this sector.

The lack of competition here will mean Apple have a head start on marketing to children starting in elementary school.

necrecious··on Demystifying the TechCrunch effect
Thanks for sharing your info. I haven't sought coverage by those tech startup blogs since my customers aren't going to be visiting those kind of blogs.

Looking back on my referral log, the highest is from a blog called geckoandfly which I've never heard from. It generate consistent traffic for the last 3 months!

My coverage from Computer World was a spike like TC, with peak at 5k and dropped to zero after a few days.

necrecious··on AdoptAHacker invites you to visit NYC
Where are you located? I am currently in Boston. My tech is going to require low level linux hackery to get performance to the next level.
necrecious··on AdoptAHacker invites you to visit NYC
Good job on Hackers and Founders last night. Kind of fun to be in the middle of college football fans discussing social media.
necrecious··on AdoptAHacker invites you to visit NYC
I've been torn between going to SF or staying in Boston. Interesting to see NYC might become a contender.
necrecious··on Most common words unique to 1-star and 5-star App Store reviews
haha, it matches my app's 5 star and 1 star reviews surprisingly well.

Most apps settle into the 3 star range for that reason.

necrecious··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
Looking for a biz dev guy in the Boston area.

Need to be knowledgeable in tech and specialist in customer development or corporate sales.

My company has a SaaS iPhone app that is looking to grow customer base and expand into enterprise market.

necrecious··on You’re a developer, so why do you work for someone else?
More like video poker, you have to know how to play the odds to eke out a living but making bank is luck.
necrecious··on 'Super Angels' Alight
Perhaps the lowering of barriers for a web type startup also makes large IPO exits harder? Since any hacker can copy it in China, Russia, Brazil and Israel.

Your perspective is that Super Angels are basically taking the place of VCs for certain scale of funding, which was previously not very popular (100k-1m range).

necrecious··on 'Super Angels' Alight
VC's have been hindered by a lack of IPO exits. I guess "super angels" are benefiting from the increased M&A activity.

I guess the question is if IPOs will rebound and "super angels" will then fade into the background again as startups go for the home run again.

necrecious··on Hey, Guys, It's Totally Okay If You Don't Get Rich
Society places pressures on every one, male or female. It has been great for feminist movement to try to identify counter some of the pressure that has made women miserable, but there isn't really an outlet for men.

In fact, I think pressure on men are growing. Being smart, funny, successful and as good looking as Brad Pitt. Men are doing more cosmetics surgery and getting eating disorders now too.

necrecious··on VC Insanity: How the economics of venture funds explain the crazy things VCs do
Interesting analysis. Hopefully some VCs will backup the line of reasoning.

It would also explain why the new type of programs like YC is exploring other economic incentives that is more aligned with the entrepreneurs.

necrecious··on Sharp IP decision on why copyright law shouldn't be used to stifle competition
I think this judge's decision should be used to instruct people about the difference 'idea' and 'execution.' Nothing like a few billion dollar price tag to make that clear.
necrecious··on Ars reviews the Motorola Droid X
I've argued that the best way to monetize something is about having features that saves people time. So Ars is completely correct in their approach. I am also using the same idea for my startup.

So that's two anecdotal evidence that it is the best way to monetize.

necrecious··on Exploiting security holes in Flash Player for Android to jailbreak
You mean virus protection software for your phone? :p
necrecious··on Data URIs make CSS sprites obsolete
To automatically assemble a huge sprite and emit the offsets is also easy.

Game engines has done this for almost 20 years.

necrecious··on Risk it When You're Young
I thought one of the biggest advantage of US financial system is for people to take risks with their business but can fail without a huge hit on their future, i.e. bankruptcy.

Without this attitude, you'll have people that is a lot more hesitant to start a business.

necrecious··on Pivoting
What if your business is going pretty much like you expected? I am actually kind of stressed out that things are going smoothly, does that mean I am not finding the weakness in my business fast enough? Or are things actually going smoothly?
necrecious··on EasyBroker Says Adios to Freemium
It sounded like they were building two product instead of offering a taste of the full version.

It is easy to figure out which feature to include in premium and which to limit in free, features that saves time.

If you can view 100 house listings per page, limit free to only 5. Time and convenience is something people pay money for.

Always develop for premium users and if it accidentally makes the free service better then that's a bonus.

necrecious··on Win a soccer game by more than five points and you lose
ah, the misere game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misère
necrecious··on Why Change Is So Hard: Self-Control Is Exhaustible
There have been other studies that shows that sugar replenishes self control.
necrecious··on Iron Man 2's Secret Sauce: 3-D Printing
They probably have a willing audience in cosplayer community. If only they also automate the painting process.
necrecious··on Nowmov (YC W10): Sit Back, Relax, And Watch An Endless Stream of Videos
Recommendation algorithms are not that tricky, anyone can get 90% of the best algorithm in a couple of weeks. (OK, maybe not anyone, but my friend at Google did it for fun to compete in Netflix competition.)

The thing recommendation engines need is data and lots of it, which Youtube has in spades and these guys have to start from scratch.

necrecious··on The Secret Cult of Office Smokers
One of my friends said smoking was his secret weapon to networking.

Because smoking is a habit cuts across hierarchies, you can meet a broader spectrum of people than just randomly talk to people at a networking event.

Also smoking time is discreet, so your convo have a natural end without awkwardness.

necrecious··on Zynga Gunning Up (And Lawyering Up) For War Against Facebook With Zynga Live
Well, the problem is that Facebook hasn't found an as reliable revenue stream as Zynga.

As a platform owner, it must suck that people are making more money off your platform than you. So you are tempted to co-op other people's revenue stream as your own.

necrecious··on Is the startup community relying too much on fate? Connecting the outliers
I thought there was some startup labs and incubator spaces around here?

I keep hearing about something like it at OpenCoffee and Mass Inno.

necrecious··on Jef Raskin: Holes in the Histories
History is pop culture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assume_the_Position_with_Mr._Wu...

necrecious··on Introducing the Linode Backup Service
I just got started with Rackspace, but they seem to be built on solid technology acquired from Slicehost.

I like the fact I can add new servers quickly and it has infrastructure support for failover and load balancing through shared IP.

necrecious··on Introducing the Linode Backup Service
I am in the process of moving my rails app to Rackspace Cloud Servers. It offers three backup images for free, but it only exists as long as the associated server is around.

A 256 meg slice only costs $10. So it is actually a pretty good deal.

necrecious··on Jeff Jarvis: I want the opposite of what Facebook just did
The best part of the post was the "Jersey Shore" become a fan on Facebook ad.

I am not quite sure what it is mocking, but I like it.
