ncw96··on Macs with T2, M1 chips cannot be restored to factory state without Apple
They do have a feature where you can prevent a stolen Mac (or iOS device) from being activated. It’s called Activation Lock, and it’s turned on automatically when you enable Apple’s Find My Mac service.

ncw96··on Ask HN: Is an ARM-based laptop a viable development machine for a Backend dev?
The chips that were in the special Developer Transition Kit hardware that developers got over the summer did not support hardware virtualization, so there was no way for the Docker team to test. The M1 chip in the Macs shipping this week has that support, so the Docker team should be able to get things running soon.
ncw96··on Reverse-engineering the problematic tail behavior of Fivethirtyeight forecast
> What value does something like fivethirtyeight add to our democracy, if any?

One possible use of polls and election models is for helping people who want to donate to candidates determine which races are closest and where their money is most likely to have an impact.

> Here’s an idea: everyone go vote for whoever you think the best candidate is regardless of what a stack of polls say.

Because the US does not have ranked choice voting in most elections, polls are useful to determine which candidates are viable. If your preferred candidate is only polling at 5%, they are pretty unlikely to win, so you might want to vote instead for whichever of the leading candidates you find most agreeable.

ncw96··on I got hacked, lost crypto and what it says about Apple’s security. Part 1
It is my understanding that Apple’s API for supplementing Caller ID info (and also optionally blocking calls) requires an app to provide a database of numbers in advance, and the system queries that database locally. The app does not get any access to call history or Messages history.
ncw96··on President Trump’s Twitter doesn't have 2FA, password “maga2020 ”
As mentioned in the article, a Twitter spokesperson says: “We’ve seen no evidence to corroborate this claim, including from the article published in the Netherlands today”

White House also denying this story.

This is missing a key three words from the end of the headline — "Windows to become emulation layer atop Linux kernel, predicts Eric Raymond"
ncw96··on Ask HN: What are good life skills for people to learn?
Here are some more ideas from a thread a few months ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23757396
ncw96··on Apple countersues Epic, seeks punitive damages
If you are an organization, Apple’s fee is still $99 per year for the standard account with App Store publishing access.

There is a second program called the Apple Developer Enterprise Program, which is $299 per year, and is only required if you wish to deploy apps for internal use across your organization without using the App Store.

ncw96··on SQRL: Secure Quick Reliable Login
The GRC page you referenced describes one potential scenario:

> To mount a phishing attack against SQRL, a fraudulent website would need to first open a valid login session with the authentic website it plans to spoof. From the valid site's login page it would obtain a “fresh” and valid SQRL link URL. The fraudulent site would then present a spoofed login page containing the authentic website's valid SQRL code. When the SQRL application is used to login, they are actually logging in to the session that was originally initiated by the phishing site. The phishing site then completes the login and can impersonate the user for that login session.

ncw96··on USB-C is still a mess
I don’t believe you can transfer files, but you can definitely charge an iPhone with an iPad if you use a USB-C to Lightning cable.
ncw96··on Swift AWS Lambda Runtime
Lambda also provides this functionality — they call it "provisioned concurrency": https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lambda/latest/dg/configuration-c...
ncw96··on Amazon.com Is Down
Looks like they're having issues with DNS on www.amazon.com
ncw96··on Ask HN: Absolute noob here, what programming language to learn to land job with?
I wouldn't say any programming language is particularly easy to learn. Your best bet is to start out with one language and stick with it. PHP and Java are both solid choices with plenty of great books, tutorials, and videos available to help you learn. I would also throw in JavaScript as a popular language that will open the door to a lot of potential web development jobs.

One of the best things you can do as you start learning a language is to find some project that you want to build and start working on it. Having a clear goal to work toward can help the learning process. Then, you can post the code for that project on GitHub, which many companies will look at when considering you for a job.

Good luck!

ncw96··on Real ID application documents can be submitted online, DHS says
While documents can be submitted online, you still need to go in person after submitting the documents.

> In a letter sent to states Wednesday, Wolf said that effective immediately, states are permitted to use a secure electronic process to accept applicants’ documents. Even if states implement that pre-submission system, applicants will still be required to make an in-person DMV visit.

ncw96··on Education publisher Pearson to phase out print textbooks
Many textbook publishers, including Pearson, have already begun strongly encouraging professors to use additional online components from the publisher for things like homework assignments.

Even if you buy the textbook used, you still have to purchase an online access code from the publisher (often for $100+ for the semester).

The textbook publishers have been working on crushing the textbook resale market for years, and this seems to be the final nail in the coffin.

ncw96··on Microsoft Issues Warning For 800M Windows 10 Users
This title seems a bit alarmist.
ncw96··on Building iPad Pro features in Swift
You can interact with two Split View apps and one Slide Over app at the same time, but this is limited to newer models (I believe 2017 iPad Pro or newer). If you are on an older iPad, it is as you describe.

ncw96··on Consumer Reports Now Recommends MacBook Pros -
According to this page, Consumer Reports tested this computer at 100 nits brightness, which is 20% of the maximum brightness. This is probably a lower brightness level than the average user, contributing to the battery lasting longer than expected.

ncw96··on Ask HN: What weather-related API do you recommend?
Forecast.io is a pretty solid API used by many apps, built by the makers of Dark Sky.
ncw96··on Writing code doesn't mix well with oration
I've always liked the way that Apple's WWDC videos have approached this issue. They show the code being entered, but it comes in by way of preset snippets, so they can add the code and discuss it one block at a time.
ncw96··on Exploit to get root on OS X 10.10 fits in a tweet
You can never be absolutely sure with Apple, but for comparison, the Shellshock exploit was patched on OS X within a week.

ncw96··on New Entry Level 21.5-inch iMac
I don't understand this product. For the same price, you could get a model with much better specs from the Apple Refurbished Store. Anyone who has ever bought Apple Refurb knows that the products are essentially new.

ncw96··on Ask HN: When is the new MacBook Pro coming?
If I had to guess, it will be this fall with the new Mac OS X release.
ncw96··on SnowShoe - Secure, intuitive, cost effective authentication for every device
I did some more reading on the site, and it appears that the product is not aiming at user authentication. For example, they suggest that you might use it as part of a loyalty program. The end user brings in their smartphone with an app and the business stamps their phone as proof that they were physically there.
ncw96··on SnowShoe - Secure, intuitive, cost effective authentication for every device
The same could be said about passwords. This device is probably best used as part of a multi-factor authentication scheme.
ncw96··on Wysihtml5 - A better approach to rich text editing
It's meant to be used as part of a web form, so just submitting the form would save the proper HTML code.

Alternatively, you could use JavaScript to get the value of the input. It's just an HTML textarea element.
