What is likely to happen will be a lot like Linux on the phone --- Linux may be buried in there somewhere but most users won't recognize it --- or even care.
If Android qualifies as a Linux victory, then a similar one may be on the way.
Most businesses will probably never leave the desktop and I think the market is actually growing again. Compared to most phones, PC desktops are devices that can easily last a decade. Not mine, but those of casual users, so a saturation would be expected.
Tablets never reached the scale of the desktop market and aside from painting, I wouldn't even know what to do with them. Maybe give them to some stupid pupils... We now have 250 million desktops sold annually.
On the other hand I like to see the faces of proponents of the day of the Linux desktop, if it finally boots while playing the well known windows fanfare.
Still, having a Linux desktop that isn't full of telemetry and lock-in features and is well supported would be a dream.
