nbabitskiy··on In defense of complicated programming languages
The proof is on the left, and doesn't require algebra. You can use another picture for the right part, like this https://microexcel.ru/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/kvadrat-sum...

(it also uses algebraic notation which can be ignored)

>> good luck proving Pythagoras's theorem without algebra.

nbabitskiy··on 54% of adults in the United States have prose literacy below the 6th-grade level
I wonder what do you read if you keep being surprised.
nbabitskiy··on What will enter the public domain in 2022
Are there any countries that enforce copyright as much as the US do? I have no idea when a book legally enters public domain in Russia, since any book I can think of is a couple clicks away. Literally anything: Nabokov, Rowling, etc

Edit: come to think of it, it's pretty universal. Libgen and bookfi are not exactly Russian. There's probably little difference whether a book is public domain unless you want to make a movie.

nbabitskiy··on Fastmail accounts blocked in Russia, here's what we know
We don't have political representation, but very much have lobbying. Sabotage of telegram is not punishable at all. This is straight nonsense.
nbabitskiy··on Effectiveness of honey for symptomatic relief in respiratory tract infections
My grandmother would put it for a day in a hole, cut in a black radish, and then feed me a spoon every once in a while. The modern hip way is to use lemons, honey and ginger to make a brew. After COVID broke out lemons and ginger in Moscow tripled in price at some point.
nbabitskiy··on The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford
I agree with everything you say. If a rogue MD in a nanny state will talk you into a challenge trial, - by all means, let him do it and face the consequences (hopefully, tough). But let's not pretend, that it would be an informed consent.

The reason for the vaccine research protocol we're settled on, is the ubiquity of wanna-be Pasteurs, and dearth of the real ones.

On a separate note. We have deprived ourselves of basic human rights under the premise, that lives are worth any economic outcome of shut down. Where I live, premeditated spreading of the Covid is considered by law an act of terrorism. Officially vetted challenge trials just don't add up.

nbabitskiy··on The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford
Well, kids over 18 can give consent. And no one can give an informed consent to a challenge trial at this point. If you and I stole the vaccine, injected it, and would try to get infected, as an amateur scientific endeavor, it would be perfectly ok. If an MD would inform us, that she "feels optimistic", in order to get a consent, she has no business being a researcher.
nbabitskiy··on The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford
It is absolutely unacceptable, that's why 2/3 answers to this comment so far use martial metaphors. It violates not the liberty of young men, who have every right to be reckless and volunteer, but integrity of the scientific community.

If the Oxford researchers made trials on Syrian kids in a refugee camp, in exchange for $100, I suppose more people would see a problem here.

nbabitskiy··on We Made One Gram Of Remdesivir
I could certainly believe that "similar" molecules behave alike, but it would be a cheap belief, like e.g. some of my friends believe in psychics. There would be no discovery, just a pseudo-scientific bullying.
nbabitskiy··on We Made One Gram Of Remdesivir
I agree, and I'm sorry. I can see how this kind of reaction to a nonsense statement can become problematic, if everybody uses it.
nbabitskiy··on Taboo language turned the wolf into a monster
Literally the same source suggests that "honey-eater" is a folk etymology, probably false: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/m...
nbabitskiy··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips

Moscow is now full of delivery guys on bikes, sometimes electric, at ~0°C. I wonder if delivery services advertise it as work benefits.

nbabitskiy··on Soviet Santa
Religious practice was certainly illegal, unless it was official Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish etc. There was no way to organize a non-canonical congregation, unless it was a clandestine operation for a dozen people.

There was an article in the RSFSR Felony codex ("breaking the laws of separation of the church from the state, and of the school from the church", #142) the sole purpose of which was to outlaw religious congregations.

Many baptists (mostly Ukrainian) were imprisoned indefinitely - well into eighties - for refusing to obtain passports.

Finally the idea of "legality" of something for which you get persecuted and mocked by state and party officials (as part of their line of duty), and get auto-fired from a significant part of the economy in a state with no (legal) private economy seems a little twisted.

nbabitskiy··on World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen Is Now World Fantasy Premier League #1
He's not #1 this week (not even close), he's currently #1 over a 16+ weeks period[0]. Each week's #1 is usually one of many random teams, picked for that purpose.

I have no idea how many games he watches, but watching the games isn't correlated to fantasy football success.

Looking at his team, all the players are in a very hot run of form, or likely to be picked just by studying e.g. Understat.com, or both.[1] Most of them are also likeable, and could be suggested by a football fan unaware of fantasy football specifics.

[0] 17th "gameweek" isn't over yet.

[1] Except for goalkeepers. His goalkeeping choices have been awful.

nbabitskiy··on Russia’s Retro Lenin Museum Still Runs on Decades-Old Apple II Computers
Heating costs me about as much as if I ran a 1kWh setup 24*7 for my 56m2 apartment. Short googling suggests, that I could do better on my own, but not so much better to actually do anything about it.

Efficiency of any infrastructure depends on it's physical condition, and technocratic abilities[0] of local governments; both are ok where I live, but mostly much worse in smaller cities.

[0] for the lack of better terminology. I can't talk about "quality" of Mayor's work in general, for it should include not stealing votes, representing actual people etc.

nbabitskiy··on Russia’s Retro Lenin Museum Still Runs on Decades-Old Apple II Computers
It never crossed my mind, in 30+ years living in Moscow, that you can get off central heating, but you actually can![0] - although, it's unpractical for a private owner, living in the city.

But the museum in question is a village house, I'm pretty sure they don't have central heating.

nbabitskiy··on South Park Responds to Being Banned in China for “Band in China”
I understand that any American president is not like Putin. However, you (as a nation) have a history of character murdering, firing for politically incorrect statements etc.
nbabitskiy··on South Park Responds to Being Banned in China for “Band in China”
What does"college educated, but middle class" mean? Are college educated people supposed to be heftier than middle class?
nbabitskiy··on South Park Responds to Being Banned in China for “Band in China”
No, it was sarcastic. i was referring to an anchorwoman, that suggested LeBron "should shut up and dribble". But obviously I'm not a native speaker
nbabitskiy··on South Park Responds to Being Banned in China for “Band in China”
>> Everyone realizes it's counterproductive

Why? Because they'll fuck you up? How exactly? Im not asking about presidents' personalities, what would their political friends think? To put it another way, who watches SP, and is it some marginal minority?

nbabitskiy··on South Park Responds to Being Banned in China for “Band in China”
But what do they feel? What Trump and Obama feel about SP? For example, in Russia everybody would (hypothetically) laugh their asses out, but the creators would be promptly sued, because reasons, and won't proceed.
nbabitskiy··on South Park Responds to Being Banned in China for “Band in China”
Please explain like I'm five. What's the social status of SP in the USA? E.g. what do Chomsky, Obama, Trump, Chelsea Clinton, Fox news think about it? How come there are no rage firings because of it?
nbabitskiy··on Why should you trust ProtonMail?
I live in a city with population of about 15 million people, and for some time we had bakeries, claiming in print that they wouldn't serve f###### (anti-gay slur). Not sure if they're still around, but quite sure I don't like letting businesses discriminate whomever they'd like to.
nbabitskiy··on The Survival of Iggy Pop
I attended his concerts twice, both times he was well past fifty and his posture was probably better than most of the audience (as was his fitness).

And it's really strange to see a thread discussing someone's height on this forum.

nbabitskiy··on Fairphone 3 Launch [video]
Its band support is not good wherever you live. It doesn't have two Russian bands, one German, one Romanian, a few US etc.
nbabitskiy··on Moscow's blockchain voting system cracked a month before election
I shouldn't have used that language, not proud of myself.

However, codedokode's concerns are utterly irrelevant. Vast majority of Moscow voters won't use this system, neither care whether the election is scientifically legitimate. Those who do have a presumption of guilt wrt Voting Committee (for a thousand good reasons). As a Moscow sociologist put it: "a political party with 30% support aims to get 90% in the City Duma. How would they do that? Obviously, by cheating and violence".

Thus, codedokode's concerns have no meaning inside Russia, and outside they serve only the purpose intended by the creators of all this: for foreigners to scorn imperfect system, and be relieved when they update it to something passable, for the same ultimate effect - steal the election.

nbabitskiy··on Moscow's blockchain voting system cracked a month before election
Excuse me, please, are you living here? Do you really think there is a possibility the majority (or even 10%) of voters will vote digitally? It's so out of character of Russian voters, that I honestly suppose you're a Prigozhin's troll.
nbabitskiy··on How Turkey Purged Its Intellectuals
I didn't really mean "Russian propaganda machine" as nobody use it as bona fide media. I mean all over the world, in Fox, Guardian, Figaro or NYT, and all non state-owned Russian media, opinion pieces are not worth opening for some time. And it gets worse, since while the quality of reporting is worlds apart, the essence of it is converging. E.g. it's amazing to what extent (imho) all this media are over-reporting Trump, Putin or Brexit anti-heroes. It's hard to imagine, that any real person, with a life and a job, can be so invested in those people.
