nawgszy··on California, Oregon and Washington announce western states pact
> or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay

It'd be nice to think that the largest pandemic of the last century would allow for this, but given the current supreme court bench I guess I wouldn't really bet on it

nawgszy··on Bay Area Counties announcing a “virtual lockdown”
There is no limitations on personal exercise like going out for walks except that you should try and remain 6ft+ from others. I don't think suggesting people be isolated from close contact with others during a global pandemic is authoritarian and wrong-headed. It seems to me like the benefits of fresh air might be lesser than the lung damage of covid19 after all.
nawgszy··on A trashed Italian manuscript got sewn into a sweet silk purse
This was an interesting comment to me.

I'm pretty anti-advertising, but somehow "cookie wall" just struck me as an absurd request. But when I think about it, cookies are kind of the engine powering advertising, so wanting to be able to avoid a cookie actually should strike me as reasonable.

Best of luck to you. Atlasobscura doesn't really seem like a place I'd be worried about this kind of thing, but then again I don't know anything about who they are or which affiliations they hold.

nawgszy··on Event-Driven Architecture
While I definitely respect seizing the snark opportunity.. I feel like I see loads of websites crash from HN / Reddit hug of death regardless of architecture, so I don't think I would necessarily consider this a failure of the architecture
nawgszy··on “I made an operating system UI within Unity”
It seems like an inaccurate statement, I would argue OSX was the first one to do type-to-search properly... Not a huge Ubuntu user admittedly.
nawgszy··on A Simplified Jira Clone Built with React/Babel and Node/TypeScript
Really minor feedback, but I reacted almost viscerally negatively to the tickets "rotating" when you drag and drop them. Looks super unprofessional. The box-shadow and the basis of the interaction already made me know I was dragging it.
nawgszy··on United orders 50 new Airbus long-range jets to replace Boeing 757s
I know people that don't think a new airframe will be designed in our lifetimes, and it's hard to disagree. Why is it taking so long?

Not minimized but generates a file 'emails.txt':

a = document.createElement('a');

a.download = 'emails.txt';

a.href = `data:text/plain,${Array.from(document.querySelectorAll('a')).map(a => a.href).filter(s => ~s.indexOf('mailto')).join(',')}`;

document.body.appendChild(a);

a.click();

How is this ala carte? they meant specific shows, or in some cases specific channels. Not just "this random conglomerate's licensed properties"
nawgszy··on The We Company S-1
In a vacuum, perhaps, but to call it "unnecessarily ambiguous" when literally placed beside the word "skimmers" seems... intentionally dense
nawgszy··on Report on Microsoft Office and Windows software: still privacy risks remaining
If one speaks from a Silicon Valley perspective, they call Apple a developer darling because it seems like every developer has an Apple laptop
nawgszy··on Respawn will deal with Apex Legends cheaters by making them fight each other
Just as DOTA2 does it according to a sibling comment of this, CSGO has a system called "Trust Factor".

Anecdotally: I am a nice guy and a good teammate, I don't abandon, I don't team-kill, etc.. I saw quite a few cheaters when I first started playing the game, but now they are quite a lot more rare and especially more subtle, to the point where I am usually not certain even when I suspect someone.

There's some pretty damning stats about how many people cheat in CSGO as well, so it's seemingly quite strong in my opinion. Of course, other's summaries will beg to differ as they see a lot of cheating and hold themselves in equally high esteem, so ymmv

nawgszy··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
> hand-wreckingly shallow keyboard travel

Now, I don't disagree with your sentiment, touch bar is definitely a nuisance without any superior use case over the buttons that were there before... But why do you think this keyboard wrecks hands? It is definitely the fastest keyboard I've typed on, and shallow keyboards are definitely inherently easier on the hands by any metric I can think of

nawgszy··on Why airlines make flights longer on purpose
There can be a lot of factors involved in that, though. The amount of aircraft in the sky is really high, and accordingly flight paths are often fairly indirect with inefficient corners involved to make the most highly de-conflicted flight paths possible.

When your plane is extremely delayed, to the point that you're the last flight taking off from your airport (and thus likely a large set of local airports), this makes the likelihood that a huge amount of airspace is more clear around your flight path now than it was for the originally scheduled flight. The updated flight path might be massively more efficient, hit favorable wind conditions, open up different speed options along the way, etc.

Since flight times are dependent on a large amount of conditions that are pretty volatile with respect to time, the original estimate was probably true, but with changing conditions and flexible scheduling, they managed to get you where you were going on time.

So, sure, maybe the 'flight time' isn't true, but it's a pretty clear indication the arrival time is.

nawgszy··on Facebook Watch Isn’t Living Up to Its Name
Can't agree with this enough. The whole CSGO community hates this deal, and it's hard to believe that ESL has made up for the lost audiences with the money from Facebook.

Although, maybe not, it's also hard to believe they manage to monetize me watching CSGO, considering I already own the game, a tower, the best mousepad, the best CS mouse, a mech keyboard, and two monitors...

nawgszy··on Design flaw behind MacBook Pro’s “stage light” effect
Hackintosh is pretty easy these days, even properly including hardware acceleration and audio support. I have a tower I can use for gaming with Windows and music via Logic Pro X on Mac, I would definitely recommend trying that route. Best price point, most customizable, most flexible
nawgszy··on Boom Supersonic raises $100M, aims for 2019 test flights
I find it amusing that planes like the Concorde were shelved once and now we have emerging businesses trying to capitalize on that dead market.
nawgszy··on Facebook’s Clear History privacy feature is still months from launching
Surely we can't be expected to believe they don't have techniques to re-identify that data.

I suppose that's the subtext of what you wrote, though.

nawgszy··on The Sound of Pixels
Fair enough!
nawgszy··on Using websockets to easily build GUIs for Python programs
>I recently built [a simple app built on a platform for building simple apps] in the fraction of the time it would take me just to setup a webapp

Ok, sure

>It's pretty impressive and goes to show how badly setup the web is for apps

That conclusion really doesn't seem to follow for me. Someone else wrote a library that does all of the setup work, and then you didn't have to do that work, so you concluded that something else wasn't well set up?

nawgszy··on The Sound of Pixels
Well that's not quite true. The point is, I believe, that vocals are generally put right in the center of the sound-stage, so they play equally in the left and right channels. Thus right - left is most of the rest of the song, but the vocals cancelled each other out.

However, the right - left mix isn't exactly the song minus the vocals, it's an odd off-version, so subtracting that from the original song will leave mostly the vocals but with artifacts from the difference between the song truly without vocals and the right - left mix's interpretation thereof

nawgszy··on Amazon hits $1T market cap

nawgszy··on Why Westerners Fear Robots and the Japanese Do Not
>anthropomorphizing (it's a word if I want it to be)

I think it's a real conjugation of a real word regardless of whether or not you want it; 'anthropomorphize' is a thing

nawgszy··on You don’t need standups
>What if I don't want a team mate to look at something I'm working on?

>What if I just want to focus on building, not explaining and sharing?

>it makes them share if they are thinking incorrectly about something

>it makes them easily replaceable

I think the thing that makes you easily replaceable is if you constantly are thinking incorrectly about something and are unwilling to be corrected by teammates because you aren't able to explain what you're doing and share your thought process. Writing buggy code and refusing to work with your team is a primo way to get canned. Owning the fact that there's time constraints and imperfect code and minimizing the risks taken and assumptions made by understanding the architecture is valuable.

Stand ups might not be the way to do it, but if even the prospect of sharing your thought process and explaining what you did strikes you as being 'micro managed', well.......

nawgszy··on We’re underestimating the mind-warping potential of fake video
I'm certainly not saying that we have no redeeming factors. As you say, that would be an absurd mindset in this world we live in.

However, I don't know how you can deny that we are greedy and have limited ability for compassion. Do you deny Dunbar's number? If not the specific selection, the concept?

Do you deny that some men have 10 figures of wealth while others have nothing to their name?

Do you deny that we have, as a society, enacted a plague upon the planet, and are causing extinction of other species at a rate only witnessed within other extinction events?

Just because one has virtue does not mean one doesn't have vice, and certainly the same applies to the "one" that is human society. While we certainly have accomplished great feats and have seen great individuals, as a collective, we do not know how to relinquish the individual pleasures in order to facilitate comfort and health for all.

As the article I saw here recently that said something along the lines of "people are not stupid; life is just hard", your energies are limited, and there are those who take advantage of the splintered and uncoordinated thoughts of society to gain great wealth and power, and those who use their great wealth and power to splinter and confuse the thoughts of society.

That is the cancer, not my thought that these people exist; do not ignore that their existence is all but guaranteed by the very nature of the creature we must have been to find ourselves the dominant force of this planet.

nawgszy··on We’re underestimating the mind-warping potential of fake video
It seems to me it's the mere fact that humanity's rise was borne on the back of its ruthless drive and selfish greed, and the same things that made us the best hunters also influence society in myriad ways.

In my eyes, greed, hierarchy, and limited compassion / an inability to share are the filter, and all society's diseases are the symptoms.
