nashalo_nighly··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
I have to comment that I think women who want to date go to tinder as a very last resort and don’t expect a long term relationship there. For serious relationships we tend to go to okcupid and bumble as they are wayyy less creepy apps. At least where I live tinder is known as the one night stand app.

I agree with your sentiment except for the « men unable to feel » thing. Emotions and sentiments are a fundamentally human thing and men feel too. However there is a social pressure on men to not show emotions and sentiments. We fight patriarchy so that women are less pressured into being fragile and pretty housewives but we should also fight it so that men are less pressured to be emotionless hardworking robots who have to provide for their family.
nashalo_nighly··on USA Today resists FBI subpoena seeking IP addresses of readers of a story
Maybe a technique like « give us the IPs that start with xxxxx » be a compromise between the two?
nashalo_nighly··on Instagram lets users hide likes to reduce social media pressure
I disagree with the part on the ugly comments. It is very typical and blocking every single nasty comment on your appearance can be a mentally taxing effort that you can’t quite put under a « just block them off it’s easy » assertion.
nashalo_nighly··on Is that ship still stuck?
Before destroying the ship you would need to pump out all the fuel which can take a very long time in itself
nashalo_nighly··on Is that ship still stuck?
Yes since the salinity transfer from the canal into the Mediterranean Sea is already enough to make species from the Red Sea colonize the east Mediterranean. The Aswan dam reduced further the amount of freshwater coming to the area. So I would guess adding more salt wouldn’t be too good for the eastern Mediterranean.

I agree. Women also code, which means we also make mistakes.

nashalo_nighly··on Ask HN: How to build empathy?
A major epiphany for me was realizing that when someone is talking about their problems they don’t necessarily want / need to hear solutions.

When a solution pops don’t say it until the person stops talking or asks « what would you do ». It worked for me well to improve my listening skills.

In a lot of countries there are even more regulations and yet the US pricing seems quite uniquely high
nashalo_nighly··on The Feminine Physique: On Women's Bodybuilding
Most homicide victims are men and men are on average stronger than women so I seriously doubt that.

nashalo_nighly··on SARS-CoV-2 induced remission of Hodgkin lymphoma
Wow do we know why it affects men disproportionately compared to women?
nashalo_nighly··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
For someone like Trump with a bruised ego, being welcomed by everyone like a religious figure can be very appealing I think.

nashalo_nighly··on A 4-month online dating experiment using 10 fictional singletons (2012)
I’d say most women know that dating sites are mostly a cesspool of dickpics and stupid pick up lines and the chances of having an actual interesting conversation is pretty small. So most likely we prefer exhausting all other options before resorting to dating sites.
nashalo_nighly··on Norwegian Covid-19 contact tracing app banned by the Data Protection Authority
These measures are common sense during a pandemic and should be limited in time. In many countries (at least France and UK) all these measures are bound in time and the time mandate is regularly renewed by parliament.
nashalo_nighly··on Gender and Race Preferences in Hiring at Silicon Valley Tech Firms [pdf]
Given that as a woman you don’t benefit from the “competency bias” and constantly has to prove yourself (which is not necessarily bad), combined with the fact that many women simply walk out of careers in computer science and physics because of sexism/harassment, you could consider that the women left are indeed more competent than the average man in the industry.

I don’t think comparing only mortality rates is accurate. I can’t say « you are much more likely to die by falling into a volcano than to die because of the flu » just because the mortality rate of falling into a volcano is much higher than getting the flu.

I think one also has to factor in the likelihood of the event, in the case of diseases we might look at how contagious the diseases are.

nashalo_nighly··on Westinghouse Files for Bankruptcy, in Blow to Nuclear Power (2017)
Solar and wind are still not good at providing a baseline load, especially in winter where the power consumption is higher. France slows down some reactors during heat waves due to environmental regulations not allowing power plants to heat the river past a certain threshold, not because disposing excess heat is inherently difficult.
nashalo_nighly··on Fewer premature babies born since Covid-19 lockdown
Because ultimately as a company you need workers past the current generation. If women stop making babies due to having to bear a financial and occupational burden, then your company will quickly disappear due to a lack of workers and customers.
nashalo_nighly··on Google to keep employees home until summer 2021
Honestly can we stop saying these type of claims that men are « biologically » made to be breadwinners and woman « biologically » made to do house work? Not only the claims are dubious, but even if they were true doesn’t mean everyone is the same.

For a lot of people including women housework is actually boring and they would rather have a fulfilling career.

Perpetuating the idea that men should work outside and women should work inside really makes life really hard for men and women that don’t think that way.

nashalo_nighly··on Dealing with Insomnia
If you struggle with bad sleep I encourage you to get tested by a sleep doctor. I was diagnosed with delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD) and honestly reading the Wikipedia page made me cry.

All my life I thought I was just a lazy person because I couldn’t achieve anything in the morning (even if working at night is perfectly fine for me).

Lockdown really changed my life for the better. I was lucky enough in my job to be able to set no alarm at all in the morning and I was able to follow my internal sleep schedule. I began to have dreams again, and I feel actually alive during the day. It’s wonderful but now I worry a lot about the time when I won’t be able to wfh.

nashalo_nighly··on Fitful nightly sleep linked to chronic inflammation, hardened arteries
I’m not so sure about that, men and women largely have the same diets yet I think sleep apnea disproportionately affects men.
