narrowrail··on Aadhaar isn’t progress – it’s dystopian and dangerous
As an American (born and raised), this whole discussion is fascinating and is similar to the 'Obamacare' debate here. All of the Indians I've known in the US corroborate your claim about knowing one's religion/ heritage by last name alone. I hope the discussion can remain civil, but there does seem to be an agenda among some participants.
narrowrail··on Declassified memos show FBI illegally shared spy data with private parties
Or lack there of. They're busy getting hysterical over the highly damning allegations of the day that is our current 'NightmareTV' political situation.

Because the Obama admin was implicated in it, the coverage seems to be broad in Republican circles (i.e. Fox News). I wish us non-tribal people could form some common-sense, bipartisan group.

Edit: added less ambiguous descriptors.

narrowrail··on Declassified memos show FBI illegally shared spy data with private parties
I don't have the experience you do, but all of the big violent acts we have had over the last 20 years that I remember were perpetrated by US citizens (except 9/11).

I agree that we should not shape our laws based on edge-case criteria (e.g comic book villains), but their has to be some cross-state law enforcement.

narrowrail··on Declassified memos show FBI illegally shared spy data with private parties
Sure, you have the tribal-ists that are anti-Trump or anti-Obama, but I find there are many civil libertarians on HN. In 2013, during the wake of the Snowden release there must have been 3-5 threads per day.

I don't feel qualified to assess the inner workings of the FBI, but there appear to be no checks on this surveillance power with any teeth. We need to fix this immediately. It should not be a partisan issue.

narrowrail··on “Markets Today Are Not What We Believe” – The Façade of Competition
Just FYI, in the rural areas, we don't have emissions at all. Also, my neighbor has 1947 Ford truck that he drives in the summer.
narrowrail··on Florida GOP consultant admits he worked with Guccifer 2.0, analyzing hacked data
I think it's interesting that George Washington, in his Farewell Address[0], warned of political parties being an enemy of the government, and could provide a route to foreign governments and interests to have influence on our government. That linked section provides almost an exact description of what seems to be going on in the US currently. I would like to see the RNC and DNC dismantled by the people.

narrowrail··on Maine Is Drowning in Lobsters
Which is odd since he only became CEO in 2013, "In January 2013, it was announced that Lampert would take over as chief executive officer at Sears after Louis D'Ambrosio stepped down due to family health matters, which took effect in May 2013."
narrowrail··on Maine Is Drowning in Lobsters
I listened to the first earnings call when Lampert took the helm at Sears, and he said to think of Sears as a real estate company. In other words, I don't think he thought a lot about Sears potential as a retailer.
narrowrail··on Frighteningly Ambitious Startup Ideas (2012)
>How many apps do you have on your phone? How many online accounts have you created in your life? How many different messaging apps are you using?

"Single point of failure," "Separation of concerns," and "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" are the phrases that come to mind. Risk mitigation is a concern for many of us, and what you describe sounds Orwellian to me.

Have you checked out Urbit? I believe it's a decentralized/federalized system instead of the centralized on you describe.

But, I'd be interested in seeing your prototype of The Borg :)

narrowrail··on Voten.co, a Real-Time Reddit Alternative Launches Public Beta
You seem to be insinuating about a conspiracy among Reddit the company, admins (low-level employees), and [mostly] independent subreddit moderators. I think your premise is flawed.
narrowrail··on Voten.co, a Real-Time Reddit Alternative Launches Public Beta
After you made this comment, a whole discussion[0] ensued regarding this topic. Looking at the front page of Reddit is like refusing to use kill files on usenet or /ignore on IRC "because I want to see what 'they' are saying."

The short of it, like many similar platforms from the past, is that Reddit is highly customizable if the user chooses that route (not to mention Reddit Enhancement Suite).

narrowrail··on How Craigslist Makes Money
Thinking about this a bit more, I think it would have to be a show where the hosts were in on it. The scam artists would learn of this show if it became popular, and avoid renting to folks seemingly associated with it.

A format like "Diner's, Drive'ins and Dives" would make sense with personal tours, instead of these 'virtual tours' found on VRBO (now owned by Expedia) and AirBnB.

Anything too dramatic won't scale, or it will be fake (like most 'reality' tv).

Edit: I guess one could do it surreptitiously, and save up the content, only to slowly release it ("maximizing revenue"). This might come across as "hit-piece journalism" funded by the AirBnB and VRBO. Change the cast of the show so they are not known associates of the show before the content is made public.

narrowrail··on Maru OS – A complete desktop experience on a smartphone
Looking at the Github [0], it looks like a fairly alpha product targeted at technical people and has one contributor. I think giving the project some slack at this point seems reasonable. I guess if there is major concern about this, one could submit a PR?

narrowrail··on Nearly 1 in 3 drugs have a significant safety issue after FDA approval
While sugar (a really generic term usually referring to sucrose) is natural, it occurs in the highly fibrous stalks of sugar cane. Most sugars naturally occur within fiber, while modern food practices extract and/or refine leaving the fiber behind.
narrowrail··on Nearly 1 in 3 drugs have a significant safety issue after FDA approval
What is the difference between medicine and drugs?

It seems highly relevant since there seems to be some quibbling about using the word natural and that it has no meaning (I agree, but another comment mentioned exactly what Taleb meant by natural).

narrowrail··on China's $1T Plan to Shake Up the Economic Order
That's fair, but many of my fellow American's in other countries within the continents think it is arrogant (I now realize that typing 'America' into wikip redirects to the US).

I think of the United States as a reasonable shorthand because I believe in state sovereignty as supreme; Still unlike anything else in the America's. My terminology and ideas are considered antiquated, but I like to believe nuance is important, and the history of the terms we use can inform how we think about these concepts. "Often copied, never duplicated."

narrowrail··on Sam Altman Considering Run for CA Governor
Not only is this submission flagged, it is also almost a day old (kinda old by HN standards), but you still felt the need to show up and link to what the public sources say. You have no insider knowledge, and the chances of the publicly known story being accurate are pretty slim. Seems pretty low to me. I almost DV'd you until I saw someone else already did, so I figured I would try providing feedback (I hate drive-by DVs).
narrowrail··on China's $1T Plan to Shake Up the Economic Order
Not to be pedantic (It's an unfortunate consequence of nuance), but just so you know, there is no country called "America." We have north, central, and south American continents with many countries; the U.S is one country in North America.
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
It's not an impassible divide, just a mentality difference. I'm not sure where you live, but my county has ~60k people (well, year round residents).
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
There are no wolves hunting humans, and the idea is so ridiculous it is astounding.
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
Maybe after 25 more years in the Rockies with an active back country lifestyle, I will encounter a pack of human-hunting wolves. Hubris indeed.
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
This is what I was talking about elsewhere in this discussion about city people ready to believe there are packs of wolves out hunting humans. 95% of the time in the back country (over 25 years in the rockies) when encountering these large predators, I only see their backside as they run away.
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
The person I responded to was talking about hunting. So, it stands to reason he had a rifle. Wolves are scared of humans. They recognize the apex predator.

Edit: I suppose I should mention that domesticated dogs can be trained to be all sorts of aggressive (esp. German shepherd). Domesticated dogs have none of the lessons taught to them that a wild wolf would learn from their mother. Wolves avoid humans at all costs.

narrowrail··on I spent two weeks delivering for Uber Eats and made $4.40 per hour
Do you believe there is a link between resource consumption and climate change? I do.
narrowrail··on I spent two weeks delivering for Uber Eats and made $4.40 per hour
As I believe humans are the #1 cause of climate change/ destruction and the eradication of other species, I think we could stand to lose about half the current human population until we can figure out a sustainable lifestyle.

narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
Right. The current rules of the BLM are that they are to lease these lands for grazing and/or energy exploration.
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
Seniority and precedent are legal concepts from English common law. None of us alive had a say in that, but it is the way things work. Private property is a cherished concept in the US (and, especially, the western US).
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
It's the type of story that city people (who spend 0.01% of their time in rural areas) seem to be astonished by because their lifestyles are so different. Trying to impose your will on people in an area you've barely lived seems quite arrogant to those that live there 100% of the time.
narrowrail··on Wyoming's War on Wolves
The entire idea is a work of fiction (I live in the SW desert). diebir went on a hike and saw beautiful public lands being utilized by ranchers utilizing their public grazing (which they pay for, though perhaps not enough which is subjective). All cattle ranchers that I've ever seen in 25 years have their own land, but depending on the season they lease rights from the BLM.

It's very strange for people to live their whole lives doing some activity in a rural area, then some city person spends a couple weeks in the area, and suddenly these people are being attacked.
