napsterbr··on Ask HN: What Happened to Elm?
I'm sorry for being blunt, but if you are mistaking a database server being down (or CDN issues, or faulty backend code, or...) with the frontend code misbehaving then either you are very ignorant to how "computers" work or you are being (very) intellectually disonest. Don't do that.

For the record: yes, as much as it may sound bold or marketing-y, the statement is mostly true. You can have runtime errors if you write a bad regex though. After almost 3 years working full-time with Elm on a daily basis, I have not faced a single runtime error.

And by the way, this is coming from someone who moved away from Elm for the same reasons mentioned throughout this thread, so I'm definitely not an "Elm fan boy", but I do vouch for this programmer's statement.

napsterbr··on Ask HN: Are people considering moving off of Fly.io?
To be fair, this sounds like an apples to oranges comparison.

Given any "cloud" instace (VM), it's pretty much guaranteed it will be considerably slower than a dedicated server of same size.

Also, it seems you are comparing a local database (single dedicated server) with a clustered database ("few-node cluster").

That said, I totally get the cost-benefit argument and this is also why I started using dedicated servers for my own projects.

napsterbr··on Ask HN: Please Review My Metalanguage
FYI there's a copy-pasta/typo at the very last section. You (probably) meant to type `digit_hex` but typed `digit_bin`.
napsterbr··on The technology behind GitHub’s new code search
I use this one almost daily. It's great to find real world examples of APIs/contracts being used. Also, instant results!

The underlying data may be limited (I have no idea how large it is, I doubt it has indexed every public repository out there), but I never failed to find examples of what I was looking for.

napsterbr··on Ask HN: I’m falling out of love with coding
I once suffered from Javascript fatigue, had to work with frontend anyways, and had the privilege of picking my own tools.

That's when I started experimenting with Elm, Bucklescript (now ReScript) and Clojurescript. It was a very insightful journey that made me enjoy frontend development again.

Today, Clojurescript is my favorite method of working with frontend code and, as long as I can pick my own tools, that's the one I'm sticking with.

For those suffering of Javascript fatigue, I highly recommend playing around with these alternatives. Try doing a simple, small side project in them. It may reignite your joy for programing and who knows, maybe you can find a job to work full-time with these tools.

napsterbr··on Don’t teach during code reviews
Yeah, same here (iOS). I didn't bother trying to figure out where the "close button" was though.
napsterbr··on Ask HN: What to do when PayPal disables your account for no reason?
It's too late for your wife (and I don't have any suggestions here) but for the others who still rely on PayPal: leave as soon as possible. It's a matter of time until the same happens to you.
napsterbr··on Ask HN: What are the worst names given to employees of specific companies?
Stripe: strippers?
napsterbr··on Carl Hewitt has died [pdf]
May he RIP.

I first heard about Hewitt after watching this[0] conversation about the actor model. It's truly a masterclass. For those who want to learn more about the actor model, or simply have a fond memory of ProfHewitt, I highly recommend it.

napsterbr··on Tell HN: Everyone should have a holiday dinner this year
Fellow loner here. It's tough, and some years are harder than others. May we never lose hope entirely and/or give up. Miracles do happen every now and then!

Ordinarily I'd volunteer to chat but at the moment my social anxiety is so severe I don't think I can have a private conversation with a stranger.

napsterbr··on Ubuntu Snap update spoiled my World Cup Final
It was the last straw for me, as well. More specially, the annoying notifications telling me to update Firefox or "it will automatically update in 13 days". I don't know what was supposed to happen, but these notifications kept showing up for several months.
napsterbr··on Asymmetry detected in the distribution of galaxies
Some more recent studies estimate two trillion galaxies. Mind blowing either way.
napsterbr··on Binance has no proof of reserves for ETH/XRP, inadequate reserves for rest
I haven’t bothered transferring out my BTC to my own wallet because 1) it’s a tiny amount and 2) the chance of me screwing up and losing the coins was greater than my exchange blowing up. Apparently, the latter point no longer holds true, so I‘ve changed my mind and decided on taking ownership of my coins.

Anybody got a nice, fool-proof tutorial/guide I can use to safely generate and manage my own wallet? I’m also open to any additional suggestions/recommendations you may have on how to do that transition.

napsterbr··on A large collection of fraudulent web stores
Off-topic, but something seems dangerously off with urlscan.io (a service I had never heard of before).

If I go to urlscan.io and look at the recently scanned sites (which are live-updated), every now and then I can find links with potentially sensitive information.

I found OneDrive and SharePoint links. I was unable to actually access the documents in them (it asked me to login), but I could see their content (or metadata) with UrlScan's "live screenshot" feature.

At one point, it scanned a "reset password" link with the authentication token in the query string (!). I was able to access that link and I would likely be able to reset the password for that specific user. I won't share the underlying website so others don't go ahead looking for it, but it was for a non-US government service.

The impression I have is that some email provider (or perhaps some antivirus software?) is automatically scanning user emails and the links are being shared publicly, alongside a "live screenshot".

I might be missing something, but this is weird.

napsterbr··on Ask HN: How do you deploy your weekend project in 2022?
I don't side-project anymore, but here's what I used to do back in the day:

I got myself a dedicated box from OVH, located in Canada. 32 threads, 64 GB EEC, NVMe disks and unmetered 1Gbps outgoing link. That cost me ~$100.

In it I had my application server and database, as well as disk caching layer in front of S3.

No need to worry about auto-scaling, as that beefy server could take care of 10-100x more users than I currently handled.

No need to worry about bandwidth costs or getting DDoSed. The gigabit link was more than sufficient (I think I used 5% of it), and OVH provides an anti-ddos service included in the price.

I had a cheaper ($10) dedicated box from Kimsufi which I used to host CI, Phabricator and other non-critical stuff.

I'd deploy with a simple ansible script which would launch a new docker container that HAProxy would then point to (similar to a green-blue deployment). This allowed me to deploy small changes[0] silently and I could test them before the actual release.

My side project was not critical enough, so if for any reason my host was unreachable I could perform a disaster recovery anywhere else by restoring from my backups. In ~4 years, I never had to do that.

If I were to start a side / weekend project today, I would probably follow a similar route. Running cloud compute instances with unpredictable bandwidth billing gives me anxiety.

[0] - As long as they did not have database migrations in them.

napsterbr··on Tell HN: Transfer your Google domain to other registrar before it locks you out
I currently host my custom domain email at Google, and am thinking of switching for this very reason. Do you recommend any specific email providers with reliable customer service?
napsterbr··on Raspberry Pi Pico: What is this code doing in its boot ROM, line 442?
That might be the case, but I wouldn't use Github search results to confirm this. I have no idea why, as this is super important, but code search in Github is surprisingly terrible. Not sure if this is just me or others have had similar experiences.
napsterbr··on Audiblegate
Out of curiosity, why does it take 5-12 hours to record one finished hour?
napsterbr··on Simutrans – Transport Simulator
I still use Simutrans soundtrack[0] to this day as background noise during light work. If you never heard it before it sounds like elevator music. I highly recommend it in case you want to fill the silence :)

napsterbr··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
Perhaps a better alternative than VPN (given it may look suspicious) would be to spin up an $cloud instance at whatever location and using a SOCKS proxy.

I used to do this back in the day to augment my Netflix selection.

napsterbr··on My Elm Experience
I use Clojurescript for the same reason. I will take any opportunity to stay away from the JS ecosystem.

napsterbr··on Nobody Pronounces the 'B' in 'Debt'
Non-native speaker as well. I recently noticed the "b" is supposed to be silent, but then every time I say "debt" without the "b", phonetically I'm saying the same as "that". They sound the same to me, at least.

This is probably related to the fact that "bad" and "bed" sound exactly the same to me.

napsterbr··on Summary of Atomic Habits

napsterbr··on Ask HN: Which tech stack is the most fun?
As others have mentioned, this is highly personal. My own favorite stack is Elixir and/or full-stack Clojure.
napsterbr··on Discourage use of Mailgun as a mail provider
Thanks!

It was quite sad to read the announcement that development had stopped. Phabricator provided me with one of the best development experiences I've ever had. I guess Github + Gitlab won, and it became insanely difficult for the smaller players to make a dent.

I'm keeping an eye on SourceHut, though.

napsterbr··on Discourage use of Mailgun as a mail provider
I thought Evan had stopped working on Phab. Does anyone know Phabricator's status? Is it still under active development?
napsterbr··on AWS free tier data transfer expansion
Same here. My sign-up experience was a nightmare and it took 3 weeks (to create an effing account).

I was at a point where I just said "screw this, I don't care about the free trial, just give me an account where I'm supposed to pay for everything". For some reason you have to go through the free trial in order to get a regular account.

I didn't even try out the platform once I got my account. They managed to drain all my energy in the sign-up process.

I'd rather go bankrupt by AWS/GCP nefarious egress fees than having to deal with Oracle again. Serves me right for giving them a shot.

I second the recommendation to stay as far away from Oracle as you can, even if their OCI pricing seems incredible.
