napoleongl··on Roll-Invert-Unroll: An easier way to replace a duvet cover
I guess I’ve been lucky in which duvets and liners I have met in my life. Only time I’ve met opposition is with flannel covers, but those are just horrible in all other ways except for starting fires.
napoleongl··on Roll-Invert-Unroll: An easier way to replace a duvet cover
” Imagine replacing your duvet cover in minutes” When i was 18 and begun my career I hospitality, we’d change a twin bed completely in like 3-4 minutes. How do you spend minutes with just one duvet (excluding disabilities but that’s quite obvious). Also, this is why Swedish duvet covers have holes in the upper corners, just reach through them and grab the liner and pull it in, shake a bit, and you’re done.
napoleongl··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
Tbh I was just too lazy to find its place in the rankings. It sure is a big business anyway
napoleongl··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
One of the largest food store chains in Sweden had their entire card payment go down because someone forgot to handle leap years!
napoleongl··on The case for a pipe assignment operator in R
It still annoys me that they had to invent another pipe instead of just recreate Magrittr’s in C to gain the speed it apparently lacks. And then missing out on one of the nicer functions of magrittr… I agree with the post that such an operator should exist., but I think it should simply be the magrittr one.
napoleongl··on MGM is down, cybersecurity attack ongoing
These days the locks are online so that you can block a lost keycard from the front desk. Previously you had to open the lock with a never keycard than the lost one to make the lost one inoperable. That works kinda fine in a small hotel but not when you 48000 rooms with millionaires in them.
napoleongl··on HATEOAS: Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State
We are using ShareASpace for some things at work and they claim to use HATEOAS. Not sure where to link to prove it though… https://docs.shareaspace.com/v1-8/developer/external-extensi...
napoleongl··on Taking a new look at fundamental tech for quiet undersea propulsion
Dang you beat me to it :-) Found the book last week when packing for a move, that can’t be a coincidence!
napoleongl··on Electricity Prices by Country
Without having studied the Norwegian grid, the Swedish one that it is connected to also experience negative prices som nights when there’s a lot of wind and we generate some 10 GW of wind power. Coupled with the nuclear plants in Sweden that still are online and we pretty much have an issue with too much being generated… Then again things freaked out in the opposite direction when two of the plants went a offline, the wind was basically zero and we had freezing temps all over the country.
napoleongl··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
I once made the opposite journey and I miss the front desk daily. I have even considered finding a nice hotel where I could do the occasional weekend shift just to do something more mentally rewarding than architecting solutions, detailing user stories and testing implementation all day!
napoleongl··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
Health care is paid through taxes in Sweden and your access to it is not dependent on your employment. You can have a private insurance (and I assume a company like Spotify does) but it’s mostly for getting access to some private doctors offices with shorter queues to some things. We don’t really have privately run hospitals as the US.
napoleongl··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
The entire concept of an Influencer is just a front for product placement. The difference nowadays is that people are actively looking for the commercials and ignoring the movie.
napoleongl··on Barilla passive cooker
Probably depends on your location. They are still sold here in Sweden for instance, but otoh almost nobody has a gas stove since electricity used to be dirt cheap here.
napoleongl··on A sand battery could transform clean energy
But thats the problem they are looking to solve… there are quite a couple of cold months in Finland and I think a large portion of their heating is electric/distict anyway so they might as well store heat rather than energy. This probably serves as a rather good balancing mechanism to the grid actually, and I could definitely see this be a thing I northern Sweden for instance , where electricity is basically free during the night and when it is windy it’s actually kind of a problem to get rid of it all.
napoleongl··on 2/3 of kids bike to school in Assen because it was designed that way (2013)
Both the Dutch and Swedes (and I guess it goes for Norway and Denmark as well) generally speak English. So much so that my colleagues from other countries find it a problem in that they get very few opportunities to learn Swedish; because everyone just switches to English when they are around.
