nanidin··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
FSD is basically navigation on city streets. If you disable FSD beta, then you have plain autopilot on city streets (TACC + steering to stay in your lane).

My point is that as an end user, there is basically no difference between autopilot and FSD if the FSD beta is enabled on the car. It's a technical detail that doesn't seem significant.

If the end user said they were driving on FSD, it likely means they are enrolled in the FSD beta and were using autopilot - in the car there is no distinction between autopilot and FSD. They are the same thing in the car if the FSD beta is enabled.

FSD vs navigate on autopilot is a pretty small technical detail on the highway. Once you turn on FSD beta, from the driver's perspective FSD and autopilot are the same thing - turned on with the same input (double tap on the right stalk), with the same stuff shown on the display.

Navigate on autopilot can change lanes on the highway and follow highway exits without user intervention.

IMO when someone says they're using "FSD" they mean they're subscribed/paid for FSD, have the FSD beta turned on, and are letting the car drive itself (whether that's FSD on city streets, or navigate on autopilot on the highway.)

nanidin··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
In any case, navigate on autopilot can change lanes on the highway without user intervention so it seems like an insignificant detail.

> if they were incapacitated.

You can see them get out of the vehicle and walk around a bit in the video[0], so I guess they were not incapacitated - see around the 46s mark in the video. The driver also claimed they were using FSD at the time the car performed the maneuver.

nanidin··on A US federal agency is considering a ban on gas stoves
Their air intake is closer to the point of combustion than a fully grown adult (by height).
nanidin··on A US federal agency is considering a ban on gas stoves
The article repeatedly mentions childhood asthma specifically. Perhaps because children are more sensitive / smaller / closer to the source?
nanidin··on How to store your app's entire state in the url
Curious if English is your mother tongue, and if so, which locale?

As a native speaker of en-US, I would write this as "base64 does not have the problem here, iMessage does."

Is the feature mandatory in any area? It’s basically fall detection rebranded as crash detection.
nanidin··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
I think it would be a matter of calling the prescribing doctor’s office, explaining the situation and giving them the details of the pharmacy you’d like to pick up the prescription from. The biggest hurdle would probably be insurance, who doesn’t want to pay for more medicine than was necessary.
nanidin··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
Southwest boards three groups of up to 60 passengers each. Every Southwest flight I have taken post-pandemic has been full. I’d bump that average up to the 120-180 range for Southwest flights this time of year.
nanidin··on Facebook increased satisfaction and usage by sending fewer notifications
I have disabled all forms of video notifications on Facebook, but over the last few weeks I have been getting video notifications for pages I follow sporadically throughout the day. It felt very much like periodic attempts to get me back into the app, despite my direct indication that I do not want those types of notifications.

I reported the spurious notifications, then eventually gave up and disabled notifications for the entire app at the OS level.

nanidin··on Power substations vandalized in Washington state
Causing trouble could just be vandalism or wanton destruction of property. Terrorism requires more than just destruction of property[0].

I haven’t found ostracism for using channels outside of Facebook. I have plenty of friends and acquaintances that I keep in touch with via Snapchat, email, and text.
nanidin··on The cost of being poor: Why it costs so much to be poor in America
Dollar General is not a dollar store. Traditionally a dollar store is a store where everything costs one dollar. Dollar General is a general store that has dollar in the name.

Yes, and as I understood it the illegal part of torrenting was the upload, not the download.
nanidin··on Tell HN: Your Android carrier can remotely turn settings on
See the Verizon OMA-DM spec[0] for one of those remote configuration protocols. It’s mostly used for configuring APN’s and other carrier specific settings to get the phone working on the network.

nanidin··on A startup’s cooling chip may surge processor power
My university surplus store was selling a huge batch of peltier elements that were used in cloud chamber research for very cheap. I bought them and connected some to a homemade water cooler loop circa 2006. I could generate temperatures around -20f in my dorm room IIRC. Condensation, and then frost would start to form quickly. It was an interesting project, for sure!
nanidin··on You don't need live chat on your website
I spent 20 minutes in live chat with T-Mobile on my mobile device. Eventually a device reboot was required. I then spent 10 minutes establishing context, then 20 minutes in live chat with T-Mobile. Another restart was required. Repeat. Ad nauseum, or at least until I determined it was no longer worth my time to pursue the promotion I was supposedly eligible for.

Not to mention, until on-prem chatGPT is available, companies that care about source code secrecy aren’t going to expose their codebase to OpenAI.

We’ll get another slew of decades long court cases once one line of Oracle or Microsoft code proprietary code comes out of chatGPT.
