nanidin··on How can we stop the CO2 that plants store from leaking back into the air?
According to my back of the envelope calculation, we would need to sequester about 272,000 trees to offset the training of one LLM like GPT4.

The price of gas has been higher than the price of gas today + 53 cents, so from an absolute price perspective it doesn’t seem unreasonable.
nanidin··on Apple, Goldman Sachs Debut Savings Account with 4.15% Annual Yield
Better than Amazon that removed the ability to do any csv exports of orders or transactions sometime between when I prepared tax year 2021 and tax year 2022.
nanidin··on Why classic gaming names like Atari are still going in on the blockchain
In my decade of paying for ebooks, I have yet to have any problems.
nanidin··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
Yeah, that is all false. You can bring food. The only restriction is on liquids. I have taken a chipotle burrito through (covered with sauce and guacamole, wrapped in aluminum foil) without issue. I have taken pizzas, sandwiches, and hamburgers. You are even explicitly allowed to take solid water through airport security.

Atari perhaps?
nanidin··on Monolith: The Recommendation System Behind TikTok
I have noticed these types of videos slip into Facebook’s Reels late at night. It’ll switch from showing me people making candy and doing home improvement stuff - videos with tens of thousands of views and likes, then it will cut to a video with almost 0 views/likes that are basically the beginning of the Onlyfans sales funnel. Never when the sun is up!

Assuming signals move through fiber optic cables at 69% of c, it has already been done.

A similar argument could be made for a key being transmitted via radio signal that has slipped out to space.

nanidin··on Joe Rogan Issues Warning After AI-Generated Version of His Podcast Surfaces
I don’t doubt it, but I do doubt that the majority of the public will make an effort to verify signatures before consuming media. I think the public will rely on trusted channels - like the personality’s .com or official YouTube channel.
nanidin··on The U.S. cracked a $3.4B crypto heist and Bitcoin’s anonymity
I believe you can buy envelopes of cash on the darknet - though then you’re probably at high risk of receiving counterfeits or running into a sting.
nanidin··on Microsoft is slowly rolling out ads in the Windows 11 start menu
I use a program to disable Windows updates called Wu10Man. I am then able to apply the updates according to my own schedule, which works for me because it's a computer in my house that isn't in a DMZ. I got sick of coming back to my PC rebooted with windows closed and context lost.

I’m not sure which way the arrow of causation points - one of the body’s reactions to stopping breathing while unconscious is to grind the jaw.
nanidin··on How to Stop Ruminating
I would also recommend reading feeling good or feeling great if you’re stuck in this type of rut.

A well informed electorate is a prerequisite to democracy. Fake news and undue outside influence absolutely must be protected against.

You can find this kind of reply on Reddit if you’re in the right subreddit. /r/science and /r/drugnerds come to mind as potential candidates.
nanidin··on Apple Music Classical
Pretty irritating that for the last week or so, when I search classical music on my iPhone, the first result was an empty playlist that told me there is a classical music app coming.

Great. I have an app for listening to music from Apple called Music. I don’t really want yet another app and the mental overhead that comes with it.

nanidin··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
When I saw Chappelle, they put phones in cases and let you hold onto the locked case. There was a way to get into the case in case of emergency without special tools, but security was kicking anyone out with a phone not in said case.
nanidin··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
Chappelle does this, as does musician Lane 8.
nanidin··on Engineers Need to Write
My personal version of rubber duck debugging involves writing an email to explain the problem. It helps solidify my understanding and usually generates new things to follow up on.
nanidin··on The FTC wants to ban tough-to-cancel subscriptions
During the chat, they kept trying to make conversation, to ask questions, and to retain me. I just copy/pasted "I'm not here for chit-chat, please cancel the subscription and confirm once complete" each time they tried to engage me.

Immediately after my subscription expired they started emailing me 1/2 off offers. The whole experience put a bad taste in my mouth and I won't be back.

nanidin··on Anxiety Strikes $8T Mortgage-Debt Market After SVB Collapse
The ability to get a loan for some % of income over 30 years also props up housing prices. If the standard mortgage term were shorter, housing prices would arguably have less upwards pressure (but this might make it harder for lower income participants to compete with higher wealth participants.)

nanidin··on Show HN: Professional headshots for remote team with AI
The copy is inconsistent on what you get and how much it costs.

In one place:

> All photoshoots include

> 120 headshots per person

> 3 unique locations per shoot

> 4K photo size

Then the individual shoots have different counts included per tier, some less than indicated for “all photoshoots” on the same page.
