Bookworm since the 90s. Learnt programming at the start of the millennium. Have been taking a meandering (frog approach iykwim wink) smell the flowers approach to it so far. However I feel like I've hit some sort of extremely boring desert or one huge mountain of one big ass rock.

nandhinianand··on Engineers should invest in decision-making skills early
i liked the water shedding idea because it is new to me. But otherwise, the blog makes me ask the question, so if engineers get trained early to focus on executing solutions who is training? Are you just blaming them on the degrees? But don't we know lots of graduates are not job-ready? The point here being there are systemic problems here. Just like there is with so many other issues and that's getting ignored.
nandhinianand··on Intel Software Defined Silicon: additional CPU features after license activation
Uhh.. this is true.. but it feels like nitpicking.. The OP clearly said the source cost is $1 per treatment.. so it shouldn't make a difference.
nandhinianand··on Study finds a difference between neurons of humans and other mammals
yeah.. my first hypothesis i was jumping to was that reducing the ion channels reduces specialization and can work on improving distributed(across) neurons decisions/calls... It would be interesting to see a cognitive behavioural task both primates and humans can do and see if the blood flow/electromagnetic activity is more spread across the brain vs more localized in parts of the brain.

I think we're on the same page..I was collating subjective and irrelevant together for the sake of the parent comment. and it is quite common in the "objectivist philosophy/meta-physical" view .

> Language shapes reality, Sorry I have disagree on this one. I don't think language shapes reality. It definitely shapes our perception, filters, and biases but shapes reality only in a very Probabilistic graphical model sense. And even then it shapes(as in cavemen---> civilization) reality as much as say, air shapes reality, mathematical formulae and theories shape reality . My usual stance on the gender identity debate comes along with the "freedom to swing your arm but not hit my nose" sense. In this case of weightlifting for ex: I recently saw a twitter mention comparing the same athlete before starting HRT therapy and now.(along with a co-competitor in the male category she used to compete with) It pointed out how much the gap between both the lifters progress has been because of the Hormones.

Anyway, I don't have a clear stance on trans-people competing in their gender category .. I think the gender based categorization in sports has to move further, but I'm ambiguous even about how the sports laws work on even doping. So since I don't have skin-in-the-game I only try to add clarity to the discussion without taking either stance strongly.

Agreed... And I am not arguing that trans women (who take hormones after the male puberty) don't have an advantage over non-trans women. Just that trans women are about identity and not biology. Oh BTW, at the highest levels of competition like olympics, I suspect there's a brain/mind involvement to a very strong level. But that doesn't change your argument anyways.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted.. your analogy is a closer one than that of depression analogy

> I don't think I have the right to insist they supress these beliefs, as long as they're not trying to harm me with them.

The argument from the trans community would be that misgendering and encouraging other employees to misgender them(which will happen if the belief is propaganda-ised) will cause significant emotional harm, risk mental health, cause problems in fulfilling job etc.. I'm not sure about how true this would be, as I'm in the closet and I'm a bit indifferent about what other people think, but can imagine it being very difficult for others.

only if you ignore the brain and it's processes as not "biological phenomena"
nandhinianand··on Rival weightlifter speaks out on transgender Hubbard's Olympic place
1. is pretty close for ex: most brain functions can be called subjective, and therefore not that relevant. 2. is relatively a trend in how civilization has been moving. The cavemen bashed a skull that seemed unfamiliar or they didn't like, we don't we try to setup a legal system and judge a sense of justice. I don't think every subjective experience should be allowed to be used over other person's choices. I guess we would need something like "your right to swing your hand stops a feet/inch from my nose" kinda principle.
nandhinianand··on Rival weightlifter speaks out on transgender Hubbard's Olympic place
And there's a bunch of trans people anecdotally debating it claiming things like height reduction and others. The truth trans people on (long-term) hormones have not been studied on physiological characteristics to be sure they're affected or not.
nandhinianand··on The work-from-home future is destroying bosses' brains
I've been running rescuetime on my computer for most of a decade, and "my developer time"(time on terminal, few documentation sites like SO, editor etc...) goal was initially 1hr 30 minutes, but nowadays it is stuck at 3 hours.. and been not filled except for rare days.

dammn... now I wanna see the play book.. I can guess some of them, but feel like I am missing some. And I really think centralization has massive systemic bugs that have caused(and continue to cause) a big worrying set of problems.
nandhinianand··on Medium sees employee exits after CEO publishes ‘culture memo’
I think it also is related to the idea of "illegibility" there probably are a lot more roles/jobs in tech that can be easily illegible. https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2011/07/31/on-being-an-illegible-... .
nandhinianand··on Medium sees employee exits after CEO publishes ‘culture memo’
Exactly... wanted to say this... I don't subscribe to the left vs right dichotomy to begin with, but "kafkatrapping" is a tactic used by both sides. When I was reading the link, I was reminded of a ex-colleague, who thought my transition was wrong because it is pandering to the inherent evil in me. Ah...
nandhinianand··on Neovim 0.5 is overpowering
I suspect your hunch about object-action way brains work is very narrow and will not hold if extrapolated outside the western culture. My suspicion is based on a belief in [Sapi-Whorf hypothesis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linguistic_relativity#:~:text=....). The need to reach of the object first is a very English specific language constraint afaik.
nandhinianand··on India's holiest river Ganges is swollen with Covid victims
Exactly, they were an ancient practice. while i wouldn't be surprised to see it practiced in remote and poor places, it would've been a negligible minority before COVID-19 times. This framing is just narrative mitigation/down-playing of the magnitude. (May be not deliberately, just misinformation from the sources, but nevertheless.)
nandhinianand··on India's holiest river Ganges is swollen with Covid victims
There's a big difference in prevalence/spread of covid across economic classes. Without knowing which one you belong to, this is not a great data point.
nandhinianand··on Ethereum crypto billionaire Vitalik destroyed 40% SHIB coins worth $7B
True.. but then the counterpoint is you can't eat money.. I mean, I understand why he gave it away, but I also don't expect it turn into anything anytime soon. May be even siphoned off by some officers.4.
nandhinianand··on Ethereum crypto billionaire Vitalik destroyed 40% SHIB coins worth $7B
Exactly how do you convert from crypto to regular currency? If you can't how do you convince the full supplier ecosystem to take crypto as payment? and If you do, then who benefits from the rise in crypto currency use in one of the largest country. I'm an Indian, and I don't want to malign the intent behind it. But it is not going to convert into COVID-19 relief anytime soon, and not sure it will matter by the time it can be converted/translated into relief.

nandhinianand··on Green vs. Brown Programming Languages
One of the side-effects of this is that, Reading Rust code is painful.. it is a bit like reading old perl or haskell code you haven't looked at. Especially when rust is not the day job it gets complicated/painful to remember the distinctions between "=" in say python(that's what i use most) vs "=" in rust. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does contribute to that previous posters' point out finding errors or bugs from libraries being used hard to find or fix. Once again, I don't care much for go, but rust is one of the languages that excite me, but trying to level up in rust(beyond the trivial tutorial code/projects) seems to need a dedicated "maker time' schedule rather than spending 30 mins- 1 hour spare time in between distractions from children.
nandhinianand··on IBM employee forced to stop kernel work under personal email address
To me the worst part is the `100% of the time` interpretation.. Seriously I thought my employment agreement mentioned only 40 hrs a week??.. Unless it has explicit clauses to mention to contributing to VNIC without IBM ID, this is just some one interpreting legal rule for their convenience or what they wanto make a stand of.

nandhinianand··on Hospitals lift curtain on prices, reveals giant swings for hips, knees and more
Ah... the problem here is not that the pharma companies aren't getting paid.. The problem is there's a bunch of banks and government subsidies and a lot of middle-people creating cost on top of enabling the funds flow. I am not sure what's the solution, but there really are a lot of administrative middle-people involved..
nandhinianand··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
Ah... I am talking about who gets to determine the cost of the coins.. So I assumed it's majority of the people who use it as a currency or exchange. But then that's my default assumption about crypto currencies in general and not sure that applies to NFTs..
nandhinianand··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
Once again I disagree.. these "some people" need to be the majority(of anyone participating in these currencies) for this mining to stay profitable.. Of course i may be mistaken about that part of the reasoning, but I'm fairly confident about it. Please let me know if you think it is an unfair assumption.
