namecheapTA··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
I was in Northern Vietnam in 2019, happily riding my rental scooter around.

I ride right past a dog on a rotisserie.

I stopped to talk to the guy and he showed me his sign that said Dog Meat. After learning the words for dog meat in Vietnamese, I saw the signs everywhere.

If you can't convince the other person through evidence or logic, atleast in technical matters, what are the odds you are actually right?
namecheapTA··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
What does "building housing for poor people" even mean? I assume you mean building housing so inexpensive that even "poor" people can afford it. I just don't understand how you build housing in Malibu that is so cheap a McDonalds employee can afford it... Yet somehow this McDonald's employee doesn't just sell it to a rich person for 10x next year. If a McDonalds employee can afford a $100k mortgage (can they?), And they somehow get this condo for $100k in Malibu, wouldn't they sell it to someone like me ASAP and cash out? Because I'd buy a condo in Malibu for $300k cash tomorrow, but I'm sure others would bid it up to well above that. How do you make houses so bad that no one bids it up?

Marriage isn't perfect, especially not with today's divorce law and family court system, but the idea of joining into a union with a new person and creating a new family unit, even if without kids, is probably the best system for most people. Single people have a way of going feral IMO.
namecheapTA··on California DMV accuses Tesla of falsely advertising Autopilot and FSD features
I worked at a luxury dealership that also had a full electric. Teslas were constantly trade in by fancy people that were disillusioned by how terrible a Tesla is inside. Even to me as a car salesman, a Tesla is just a fancy commute car. It sure isn't a luxury vehicle. So get off your high horse.
namecheapTA··on California DMV accuses Tesla of falsely advertising Autopilot and FSD features
I would argue that it's because DMV is in charge of car dealerships... But doesn't Tesla not have legal dealerships?
namecheapTA··on EVs cost 22% less to service than ICE cars, new data shows
No, I meant non gas station providing air for free... Since we're on the topic of businesses giving free services only tangentially related to what they sell.
namecheapTA··on EVs cost 22% less to service than ICE cars, new data shows
Unless you buy weird bad cars, your odds of an actual engine failure is very low. Transmission trouble is a bit more common but stick to most well regarded models and you'll also be fine. My family basically only buys high miles cars for the last 30 years. Ive never had an engine failure. Transmission problems only on one Chevy truck, known for that issue.

We now have atleast 6 cars between my family, none under 200k miles, 2 of which have 300k+ miles. Haven't done a major repair in a decade maybe. I'd say the most difficult thing I've done is replaced a radiator and an alternator.

You can't go by how often a Dodge Durango blows up to talk about how troublesome ICE cars are. Anyone that wants trouble free ownership just buys a Toyota or Honda and calls it a day. Everyone else, that's on purpose and shouldn't really be used against the actual ICE concept.

I don't really get it. Stockton CA is a bad place because housing prices rose too fast? The average house there is now probably 300k. If they were 100k still, Stockton would have less murder and car theft?
namecheapTA··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
Did you check any crime stats for the neighborhood, or were you expecting to see burglary, rape and murder as you drove by that second? Someone tells you it's bad, and all you notice is the color of people's skin.
namecheapTA··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
Everyone has equal opportunity I believe. Equal outcome? That's Bs. I'm a hard worker and decently smart. Do I get to own a single family home with a large yard in Malibu?? No? Why not!! That's not equitable is it!
namecheapTA··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
I was trying to figure out why I equated cheap with bad which you pointed out to me. I think it's because I figured if someone built cheap housing, and it was actually nice and somewhere you wanted to be, it wouldn't stay cheap for very long at all. If someone built and sold condos for 250k in a town that usually sells for 1 million.... Wouldn't the buyer soon sell it for 750k? If it's cheap, it basically has to be much worse than other options or it'll soon become the price of the expensive options.
namecheapTA··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
Ok I guess bad is not nice. But they're clearly not as safe nor as nice as the more expensive neighborhoods of the same community. And I wasn't saying they should be this way. I guess I was just going from basic observation and some memorable stats.
namecheapTA··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
It's not going to be mixed income. It's going to be segregated incomes living near by each other, both resenting the other. In Las Vegas suburbs you can sometimes see the various neighborhoods with Drastic obvious cost/value differences right next to each other. The lower cost one is hellish, and the nicer one is basically brought down by the worse one. If you could afford it, you'd never choose a neighborhood next to a bad neighborhood. So why build more of these bad ones near nice areas? Can't we just build more in bad areas? It's supposed to be cheap so why not build in cheaper areas?
namecheapTA··on Ask HN: Will I Ever Recover?
You say he's been lying about the laws, and for proof you offer the fact that no one's been arrested for it yet. Is that really how it works? If the government doesn't prosecute, then the law that is written should not be discussed as written?
namecheapTA··on New third-generation Formula E car is fastest ever electric racer
That would be a heck of a suction to help a car produce several Gs. 'Fan cars' give more traction for sure.. I'm not so sure about pass out levels of traction.
namecheapTA··on New third-generation Formula E car is fastest ever electric racer
Racecars are only really slowed down by two things.. budget and rules. Every year the cars get faster as teams budgets optimize the rule sets more and more. Often rules are created to slow the cars down, and to limit spending. If you let people spend unlimited money and have totally open rules, very quickly you'd have cars so fast they are completely unsafe on the tracks they are designated to race on.

MotogGP for example has tightened rules basically every few years to lower the gap between the top tier teams and the low budget teams, and to slow the bikes down. Even with that, the bikes top speeds are still rising and talk of unsafe speeds at certain corners grows every year.

If you just allowed 20% larger engine sizes and custom traction control, and variable aero, bike speeds would rise so high people would die every few races instead of every few years.

namecheapTA··on The hardest people for founders to hire are so called C-level executives
Ive always wondered why executives get such generous compensation packages. Are most people unwilling to take these roles at "pretty damn good" incentives packages, so companies are forced to give "crazy lucrative" incentive packages? Are there really VPs that would pass up a CEO position if it didn't come with a 25 million golden parachute clause? If it was only 5 million, they walk?
namecheapTA··on AMD passes Intel in market cap
I know several people that bought Tesla stock in the last 3 years, and I know for sure that none of them think about it in terms of being worth more than most of the other companies or combined. They bought the stock because they like the cars, see the cars often, and most importantly, they think the stock will rise and make them money.

They don't know how many outstanding shares there are, what the market cap is relative to others, or even care about profit ratio is. They just think it's going up.

namecheapTA··on Tesla on autopilot rear ends motorcycle on freeway, killing rider
As a motorcycle rider, I actually do take care to not have either of your examples happen to me, even when Im in a car.

Beyond that, there is nothing you can say to me to get me to take BART to save $2. Even if Bart was free, I still wouldn't take it.

namecheapTA··on Tesla on autopilot rear ends motorcycle on freeway, killing rider
And that's how you end up being an unlucky victim. "hope is not a strategy"

And on public transit, basically all you have is hope.

namecheapTA··on Tesla on autopilot rear ends motorcycle on freeway, killing rider
It's not about pure safety numbers. It's about my control of the situation. Once I step onto a train, I'm locked in (literally).

In my car I have a lot of control. Heck, I don't get into drive through fast food lines in sketchy areas because I don't like the idea of not being able to go forwards or backwards if a criminal type walks up to my car.

I ride motorcycles. Very dangerous. But I feel safe because I ride with my eyes open. In 20 years, I've had maybe 1 close call. While most riders I know have a crash in their first year.

namecheapTA··on Tesla on autopilot rear ends motorcycle on freeway, killing rider
Once again this is a bit misleading. Sure there are crimes at gas stations. I don't stop at those sketchy looking inner city gas stations. Also, most crimes are against the employees of the stations. And finally, there are a lot of crimes at gas stations, but there are probably 50+ million people visiting the stations daily. Per interaction, they're pretty safe especially if you stick to safe looking ones.

It falls back to exactly what I said. I know how not to get killed on the roads, and I know how not to get attacked at a gas stations.

But when I get on a locked train, there's almost nothing I can do to avoid being a victim at that point beyond fighting harder than my attacker.

namecheapTA··on Tesla on autopilot rear ends motorcycle on freeway, killing rider
The biggest difference is, atleast for me personally, I know how to make sure I don't die on the highway... I don't drink, I don't drive recklessly, I keep my car maintained, and I pay attention to my surroundings. So I feel my odds of not being a statistic are pretty good.

I have almost no real way not to end up a BART statistic.

namecheapTA··on Two containers with same number detected in Chittagong port
I worked at a small "automall" of several dealerships. Our system operated inventory numbers based on the last 6 digits of the vin#. Sounds like with 1 million options, you'd be fine. It didn't take long for duplicates to start coming up when you have hundreds of cars in stock, and sell hundreds a month. Let alone the problem with a car being sold new, and then being traded back in. That was fine, because we had a different leading digit for new vs used. But you'd be surprised how often a used car gets sold, and then traded in again at the same place. Now what number does it get? The same one. Fine, atleast they're not both in stock at the same time. Great. Sell it again. Then when a customer calls six months later, try and lookup the deal your most common way... Oh ya.. now I've got 4 possible deals for this car.
