nakodari··on Zappy – Screen capture tool
"I wanted a tool for screenshots/GIFs to supplement apps like Slack, but nothing on the market had the mix of speed and features we were looking for."

Did you have a look at Jumpshare (https://jumpshare.com)? We offer video recording, screenshot capture + annotation, file sharing, and more - all wrapped up in an easy to use Mac menu bar and Windows system tray app. On quick capture (or upload), it copies a shareable link to the clipboard so you can quickly share it anywhere. :-)

nakodari··on Are Daily Scrum meetings worth it?
It is a waste of time. Whatever you need to discuss regarding the tasks can be discussed once a week and then once the tasks have been assigned and discussed, trust the team to work at their own pace and time and deliver it by next Monday instead of micromanaging the team every day.
nakodari··on Are Daily Scrum meetings worth it?
For a small remote company like ours, it would be exhausting to do daily scrum meetings. Instead, we have an hour-long weekly scrum meeting on Monday and it's more effective.
nakodari··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
Is the form factor the same as 15" Macbook Pro or is this bigger? Did Apple simply reduce bezels on the sides of the screen to fit 16" display instead of the standard 15"?
nakodari··on Parts of AWS are down
The issue started happening much sooner, around morning time in EST, but it got worse as the day progressed. It looks like the Amazon engineers woke up and realized something was wrong and they updated their status page 5-6 hours late. But I agree, AWS is super reliable, it's unfortunate that this problem occurred and I hope it's resolved soon.
nakodari··on Parts of AWS are down
Glad to hear the issue is on Amazon's side. Our team panicked and tried to find every way to resolve this thinking it was possibly a misconfiguration at our end. I hope it's resolved soon. We're receiving complains from many users who are unable to upload their work due to this issue, I will let them know Amazon is on it.
nakodari··on Mistakes on Our Way to $88k in Revenue
How much does it cost to switch from C-Corp to LLC? What are the Pros and Cons of moving to LLC?
nakodari··on I quit social media and now I want a cigarette
Why not balance the usage with moderation that works for you? I would always catch myself picking up the phone randomly and checking Facebook even if I didn't plan to. I decided this was bad and it was distracting me from experiencing the world and spending time with my family in the evening. So I removed FB from my phone. I check FB once or twice a day for a few minutes on my laptop during work and that's all. It works for me. I stay in touch with some friends and at the same time, I am not addicted to checking it over and over again on my phone throughout the day. Has anyone else tried the same?
nakodari··on ColorBox by Lyft Design
Great tool, a small suggestion: Let the user add a HEX color and then show hues before/after based on that. It would make this tool more useful.
nakodari··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
Absolutely, I found the backside of iPhone 11 Pro horrendous. It's really difficult to look at it.
nakodari··on GitLab – A $1B business where all employees work remotely
Yes, glad to see that common sense prevailed.
nakodari··on GitLab – A $1B business where all employees work remotely
The first half of the article doesn't even name the business. The name of the business, GitLab, is hidden in the second half of the article. This is an example of a publication optimizing blindly for Google Search Optimization where they want to improve "Time on site" and other data by keeping the readers on the page as long as possible. It's frustrating. Google's algorithm needs to be updated to make it smarter otherwise publishers are going to write such articles which will cause a loss of productivity of the readers. Not sure whom to blame here, I guess both Forbes and Google share the blame for this.
nakodari··on Explaining a Novel to Pakistani Intelligence
I believe having dual nationality gives them the courage to cover what locals may not be able to cover because they can flee in case of the prosecution from the government. However, I wouldn't call this a Pakistani specific problem, it happens the world over. If you see someone promoting communism or any ideology that the govt is against in the US, I bet the intelligence agencies will interrogate or in extreme cases just vanish that person. There are also many cases in the US where there is a huge amount of cover-up. So I wouldn't call this a Pakistani problem alone. What the author is reporting happens everywhere, West or East.
nakodari··on We got banned from PayPal after 12 years of business
When we created an account, there was no such clause. We discovered that it was added later. When they pointed it out that it violates their policy, I found it surprising. At the very minimum, they should have allowed us to get permission and if denied, then at least return us 30% of our revenue at that time which was in the account. They did neither. They shut down the account and did not even answer back to our emails. I would never trust Paypal again after that bad experience.
nakodari··on We got banned from PayPal after 12 years of business
Not surprised at all. We got banned too without any warning a few years ago. I wrote about my story here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11944701

Lots of people would simply think "It won't happen to me" and move on. But this is just another example that if it can happen to people using Paypal for years, it can happen to you too. It's better to offer other payment channels to customers so you can diversify. And if possible, move away from Paypal entirely.

nakodari··on Amazon Web Services CEO: We’re a $30b revenue business in the ‘early stages’
I really wish they reduce their public bandwidth cost to half. It will make such a major impact on the internet as a whole that we will see lots of companies grow faster and newer video heavy apps launching.
nakodari··on Apple's iPhone Shipments Plunge in China as Huawei Tightens Grip
iPhones have become just too expensive for people in Asia to buy. It's simple as that. If they bring down the price to $599 like it was for the original iPhone and keep the price constant every year, Apple will double or even triple their existing market share. It will still be profitable for Apple knowing that service revenue will increase when more people are using iPhones around the world.
nakodari··on Google Takes Its First Steps Toward Killing the URL
I am skeptical that they can kill the URL. It's like those smart inbox startups that decided to kill email a few years ago but they ended up shutting down and email has become a stronger and more important tool in communication now. Some things don't need to be replaced or killed. If it works, it works. URL is the foundation of the web and killing it would be more difficult than killing the email. Just my 2 cents.
nakodari··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Try FitBit Versa, apart from the always-on screen, it has everything you're looking for. The battery life averages 4-5 days depending on usage. I personally own it and it's the best purchase I have made. Drastically improved my life.
nakodari··on Growing Our SaaS to $1M+ ARR: 7 People, 3 Years, No VC Money
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I noticed that one of the books that inspired you was Traction. Which growth channel worked best for you?
nakodari··on Growing Our SaaS to $1M+ ARR: 7 People, 3 Years, No VC Money
Huge congratulations! I noticed there was a constant revenue at 20K MRR but then starting January 2017 it picked up in growth. How did that happen?
nakodari··on Ask HN: What's the mission of your company and why does it matter?
I am the founder of Jumpshare (https://jumpshare.com).

Our mission is to make everyone more productive. When running a previous startup with 20 people, I found that communicating effectively with them was a challenge. To share work with them and with outside clients and collecting feedback and ensuring everyone was on the same page took many back and forth steps. I also noticed that everyone was facing the struggle to communicate effectively both inside and outside the team. Thus, losing a lot of time and overall productivity.

nakodari··on Ask HN: Can SaaS businesses send email verification emails to users under GDPR?
Thank you!
nakodari··on Amazon S3 and Glacier Price Reductions
I wholeheartedly agree. The bandwidth cost reduction is long overdue.
nakodari··on Amazon S3 and Glacier Price Reductions
In our startup, the biggest cost is bandwidth. We live in an age where videos can be created and streamed in seconds to millions of people. With so high cost for bandwidth, it's very difficult for bootstrapped startups to grow as quickly as those who raise VC funding. I hope AWS can reduce the outgoing bandwidth cost by 50%.
nakodari··on What the Heck Is Happening at Apple?
The problem is right here, "I’m writing this on a mid-2010 non-Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro I bought six years ago last June. Yes, over time I increased the memory to from four to 16 gigs, took the hard drive up from 240 gigs to a terabyte Fusion drive."

Here's the thing. Apple is making this increasingly difficult in newer Macbook Pros.

nakodari··on “PayPal has demanded that we monitor data traffic as well as customers’ files”
Another victim of Paypal here. I run Jumpshare, a file sharing and collaboration service for creative professionals. This is what Paypal sent us:

"May 8, 2016: When you signed up for your PayPal account, you agreed to our User Agreement and Acceptable Use Policy. Because some of your recent transactions violated this policy, we've had to permanently limit your account.

Please remove any references to PayPal from your website."

They never mentioned which transactions violated the policy, we have never had any complains from our customers. There was no prior warning. We called them and they asked us to email them. We sent multiple emails and nobody bothered to respond back. We lost 30% of our recurring monthly revenue right away!

We now use Stripe as our sole payment service provider. After this experience, we will probably never accept Paypal again.

nakodari··on Google: End of the Online Advertising Bubble
Ads won't die, the way they are served will change. You can look at Instagram who are serving ads natively in their feed and they perform well. Lots of other products are doing the same. Ad Blockers can only block traditional ads in web browsers, they won't affect the native ads in apps.
nakodari··on Visiting Factories in China as an Entrepreneur
I am interested in this too. $100/night and $70/night sounds affordable and looking at the picture, the hotel room looked pretty good.
nakodari··on Screencasting with free software
You can also use https://jumpshare.com, which uses FFMPEG for screen recording. We built this app to help everyone be more productive. You can capture and annotate screenshots, record screencasts and audio clips, compose notes (in text, markdown, and code), and more.
