nachteilig··on The Mixergy Guide to Building a Recurring Revenue Business From Scratch
The creating fame section of this was pretty interesting, although it still seems easier written than done
nachteilig··on Google’s most advanced voice search has arrived on iOS
From my non-scientific tests, it seems like LTE has much lower latency than 3G networks. That's a big deal for me.
nachteilig··on Google’s most advanced voice search has arrived on iOS
Between this, the unlocked/contact free prices for the Nexus 4 and google maps? I'm typically an iOS guy and I'm right with you. If only they had put LTE in the Nexus 4!
nachteilig··on Google’s most advanced voice search has arrived on iOS
Wow, this is fantastic. Eddy Cue has a tough road ahead getting Siri even to this level, I think.

Google, please release your maps app for iOS now!

nachteilig··on Hacking language learning
Thanks! This is great. I've been trying to use a method like this while learning chinese and it's working pretty well.
nachteilig··on Scott Forstall leaves Apple
I'm actually surprised that they allowed John Browett to receive his first batch of grants before they showed him the door. Didn't seem like he had long after some of his recent communication problems.
nachteilig··on Nexus: The best of Google, now in three sizes
I've been an iOS device guy since the beginning, but these low pricepoints on a flagship Google device make it very, very tempting to at least give Android a try. Well done, Google!
nachteilig··on FBI releases documents that confirm they proactively spy on anarchists
Because opposing the government peacefully is not a crime.
nachteilig··on DIY lab equipment, courtesy of 3D printing
Fun idea, but I can't see any real journal ever accepting a paper where the methods would be so roughshod and unreliable.
nachteilig··on Extend Twitter Bootstrap with these Bootstrap Form Helpers
It's really pretty cool that bootstrap has spawned such a tertiary market for addons. I knew it was the real deal when I actually paid for a theme rather than writing the css myself!
nachteilig··on Nori Lights - Bicycle Illumination System
Actually there are several similar solutions out there already. Check out http://www.monkeylectric.com or http://revolights.com

Still, this is a pretty neat addition to this increasingly crowded bicycle light accessory space.

nachteilig··on [dead]
As much as I try to avoid "x for n genre" sites like this, I have to say that I really enjoy this one. It's really fun to move through the associations they've put together for artists I like already.

(Although their search algorithm could use some help. It can't find "Gilbert & George" when one searches for "Gilbert and George")

nachteilig··on Monsanto Seed Patent Case Gets U.S. Supreme Court Review
Patenting genes strikes me as the only use of patents worse than patenting software.
nachteilig··on Language learning makes the brain grow, Swedish study suggests
I kind of wonder if this research would translate to _programming_ languages at all.
nachteilig··on How Steve Jobs' Love of Simplicity Fueled A Design Revolution
Can we please get over the (entirely reasonable) hurt feelings about Ritchie not getting the attention Jobs did?

Jobs certainly made a lot of contributions to his field, even if they were in a different area than Ritchie, and it doesn't advance the discourse to constantly yell "BUT THIS OTHER GUY!" whenever someone is memorializing Jobs.

nachteilig··on Android users outraged over Motorola's broken promise
This may be a funny comment to find on HN, but even as a reasonbly technical person I really don't want to spend the time to find mods, research what my hypothetical Android phone is capable of running etc.

Especially because I depend on it to occasionally take a call and whatnot--I don't want to worry about whether some program or software update is going to screw it up. I worry enough about this stuff at work.

Nexus sort of solves this problem, but I hope that Google will do an even better job as Apple has now that they own Motorola.

nachteilig··on Steve Jobs came within a song of going to the Moon
Cringely is such a hack.
nachteilig··on How to Model Viral Growth: The Hybrid Model
And here I was hoping for a tutorial on virology viral growth curves ;o(
nachteilig··on Steve Wozniak gives jailbreaking the thumbs up, wishes iTunes supported Android
I can't thank you enough for this post. It really bothers me that Woz always manages to get so much attention for his seemingly anti-Apple opinions for this very reason. He's a great guy, but he hasn't been involved at Cupertino for a majority of Apple's existence now.
nachteilig··on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales ban lifted in the US
Let's not only criticize Apple for this. Samsung is attempting to do the same thing even now with the iPhone 5.
nachteilig··on CSScomb
God. Please don't start this again. This discussion is really no different than the vim vs emacs of old.
nachteilig··on A year on, Ultrabooks are a worse disaster than most expected
It really amuses me that so few tech sites bother to mention the MacBook Air when talking about "Ultrabooks". It's not like one can exactly deny that Intel/PC manfcs were "inspired". I wonder if its genesis is part of the reason that they fail so hard when it's not Apple making them.
nachteilig··on Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem?
For turn by turn? Sure, for the most part. Probably the only downside is that Apple's location database hasn't yet caugh up with Google's.
nachteilig··on Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem?
I really disagree with your views of the "ain't broke" area. For me and a lot of users it _was_ broken, because it had tiles that didn't zoom properly with a slow connection and didn't have turn by turn. Maps was falling behind, especially with the lack of turn by turn. Even my non-technical friends have been wondering when iOS would finally catch up with Android on that front.
nachteilig··on Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem?
As much as I dislike Forstall--particularly the way he presents--I don't think we can lay this all at his feet. You can bet that even Steve had a hand in this decision.
nachteilig··on Subtle Patterns
It's really awesome that they thought to include retina versions. I really hope this becomes the norm, esp. with bootstrap etc.
nachteilig··on Why Apple will move away from Intel and towards ARM 64 bit
Seems pretty silly to claim it's "obvious" as this guy does repeatedly. I'm not sure you can claim that the move from being able to upgrade and service computers to not being able to is a move toward being an iOS device. Seems more likely that Apple just makes those sacrifices because they're required to make thin and light products, and at today's speeds few people need to upgrade things anymore. (Not that it wouldn't be _nice_ to be able to upgrade things, but we've seemingly moved to a time when a lot of people don't mind the lack of this as a feature)
nachteilig··on Google has an iOS 6 Maps app awaiting approval
Thank god. I'm holding off on upgrading to iOS 6 until this is released, so it will be very welcome. I live in a city, so accurate location data is important to me (and I prefer not to use the web based google maps because I don't want to give safari permission to use location data)!
nachteilig··on Irish Minister for Justice considers Apple’s iOS 6 Maps dangerous
I can't speak to Ireland, but pilots using the Maps app for navigation wouldn't "fly" in the US. There are electronic cockpit apps that can be used on an iPad, but Maps isn't one of them.
nachteilig··on New Apple maps app under fire from users
I can't find the link just now, but Google has stated previously that they're working on one.
