naavis··on All poverty is energy poverty
Building renewables requires mining for precious metals and rare earths though, which is very energy-intensive. So to deploy these non-polluting renewable energy sources, you first have to pollute a lot. And it's not even clear if there are enough resources on Earth to do this.

Solar panels, batteries, wind mills and such do not appear out of thin air.

naavis··on Why do arrays start at 0?
It loops while the condition is true. When an underflow happens, it stops being true.
naavis··on Good conversations have lots of doorknobs
> "What's up?" is nearly universally a way to prompt someone to ask you that question back, so you can tell them about the thing you really want to say without it seeming sudden or forced.

Maybe in the United States, but I would hardly call it universal.

naavis··on How to Make a CubeSat
> Isn't there a requirement for all cube-sats to pass radiation tests / shock tests or whatever for them to be accepted for launch?

I guess the launch provider doesn't care whether your satellite will actually work and survive in orbit. They just don't want it to break into pieces during launch and damage the rest of the payload. So they most likely just want vibration tests.

naavis··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
Okay, that covers gender as far as I can tell. But how about sexual orientation?
naavis··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
But why would an employer keep tabs on the gender identities or sexual orientations of their employees?
naavis··on I replaced all our blog thumbnails using DALL·E 2
You can use the same image for every page on the website if you want.
naavis··on Run your own DALL-E-like image generator
They don't really serve the same purpose. Vulkan is a low-level graphics API while CUDA is a much higher level toolkit for GPGPU.
naavis··on Use one big server
It adds up surprisingly quickly when you have to do a TLS handshake, download many resources on pageload etc. The TLS handshake alone costs 3 round-trips over the network.
naavis··on FOMO is disastrous for company strategies
It was edited. Previously the article did not spell it out.
naavis··on FOMO is disastrous for company strategies
I assume FOMO means ”fear of missing out” in this context, but the article never actually spells it out.
naavis··on Poll: What do you call the small USB device that you plug in to transfer files?
"USB stick".
naavis··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
So effectively they couldn't be made just anywhere, if they can't be made in the US?
naavis··on Amazon is intimidating and harassing organizing workers in Montreal
Because cost of living is different?
naavis··on A lightning bolt would be worth only about a nickel (2015)
The rubber soles don't mean much, though. The electric current just passed through kilometers of insulation (air). It doesn't care about 2 cm of rubber.
naavis··on Azure is having issues, again (West Europe)
Yup, Azure Portal has been acting up all morning, randomly not letting me in. Now there was an issue with Azure CDN not serving files but instead randomly closing connections or returning 404. It recovered pretty fast, though.
naavis··on Git ignores .gitignore with .gitignore in .gitignore
It's not exactly best practice to store passwords in version control.
naavis··on Git ignores .gitignore with .gitignore in .gitignore
You could use `git add -p`

It lets you stage individual changes inside files instead of the whole file.

naavis··on Computer work lying down comfortably with a home-made stand over the bed
Cool! How do you get in and out of the chair with the screen and everything in the way?
naavis··on The first image of Earth taken from outer space
Why does it need a name?
naavis··on Learning Rust – Day 4 – Understanding Modules
I had exactly the same experience. It's a simple system, but felt very confusing at first.
naavis··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
St. Petersburg is already less than 100 miles from Estonia, which is a NATO country.
naavis··on Ask HN: The book that did it for you in math and/or CS?
Physically Based Rendering was a great primer into linear algebra, statistics, sampling theory and whatnot. It's also available online for free these days: https://pbr-book.org/
naavis··on Alleged full dump of Russian military personnel, including IDs and SSNs
The same concept exists elsewhere, usually with more or less the same name.
naavis··on Alleged full dump of Russian military personnel, including IDs and SSNs
Why wouldn't they?
naavis··on Event-driven access to my home after a run
So if you turn off your phone for 5 minutes while staying at home and turn it on again, does your garage door open?

EDIT: Or do you need to go press a button on a webpage before going out for a run to make this work? The last part seems to suggest so.

naavis··on Simulation of a 2B-atom cell that metabolizes and grows like a living cell
NVIDIA provides tools that just mostly do not exist for other GPUs, making it easier to build on CUDA instead of something else.
naavis··on Alexa suggests lethal challenge to child
Smart speakers are very marginal products even in many very developed but non-English-speaking countries because their native language is not supported. Quick googling says Alexa supports English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Hindi, Japanese, and Portuguese.
naavis··on Alexa suggests lethal challenge to child
> I feel like we're on the verge of an age where every single person is used to, and just has an Alexa/google home voice assist in their house.

This mostly applies to the USA.

naavis··on Ask HN: Am I the only “unlucky” software engineer?
> There’s nothing wrong with asking for clarification about reasoning, but when someone is constantly challenging every decision made by management then it becomes an impediment to getting things done. If you want to be the person calling the shots, you should probably be applying for management positions. If you want to take an IC engineer position but constantly argue with the work, the company will eventually need to isolate you with a patient manager or remove you from the team in order to keep everyone aligned.

> More broadly: If you expect every manager to reflect exactly how you would choose to run things, you may be trying to act as a “backseat driver” manager without taking the responsibility of actual being a manager.

These hit close to home. Need to do some introspection, since I think I kind of behave this way. Thanks for writing this!
