n1000··on Why Did ProtonMail Vanish from Google Search Results? (2016)
This article is from 2016. Maybe this should be mentioned in the headline.
n1000··on A Beginner´s Guide to Getting Things Done
Maybe. But I think the method is not supposed to be applied word by word. Reading the book taught me some very important lessons nevertheless. What is an actionable item. Tasks must be clear. Small task should taken care of right away. etc.

> Protects you against tracking through "free", centralized, content delivery. It prevents a lot of requests from reaching networks like Google Hosted Libraries, and serves local files to keep sites from breaking. Complements regular content blockers.

n1000··on Purism Librem Laptops Completely Disable Intel’s Management Engine
Could you provide sources for this? I have never heard of such a Dell machine... My understanding was that there are currently no real options to run an Intel CPU laptop without ME.

n1000··on Changes to Google Scholar
Scholar is by far the most powerful search site for academic literature. They not only find new publications weeks before other platforms do, but also find far more literature from all sources.

Nevertheless, I feel like this is one of these half-hearted Google projects and doesn't fully live up to its potential. This relatively subtle UI change is a good example that they don't seem to care too much about taking it further. I just pray Google doesn't shut it down one day.

n1000··on Deep neural networks more accurate than humans at detecting sexual orientation
I love the fact that the authors also see that implication and include a warning.

> Additionally, given that companies and governments are increasingly using computer vision algorithms to detect people’s intimate traits, our findings expose a threat to the privacy and safety of gay men and women.

n1000··on PhD Productivity Strategy: Do Deep Work in Less Hours
Just got myself a nice pair of noise-cancelling headphones last week. I had some extremely productive hours like I've hardly known before.
n1000··on UK launches program to explore removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere
Well, photosynthesis has been deployed some million years ago and works rather well. Stop deforestation, manage forest wisely and start using wood again. 1 m3 wood = 1 ton of CO2 sequestered.
n1000··on Apple’s new APFS file system
As far as I understand it, this will verify checksums within the time machine backup by comparing hashes with the ones that were created during backup. However, it will not compare the files against the ones on the system. So it protecte against bitrot on the backup disk only.
n1000··on Apple’s new APFS file system
Since there seem to be experts here in the discussion: I keep thinking about a little toy open-source project to adress bitrot in TimeMachine backups. A utility that compares chekcksums of the original file against its backup. Apparently Apple started using hashes internally in Time Machine and it would probably be simplest to use those. However, I cannot find any documentation on the internals of Time Machine. Does anyone know where to start looking? Would such a tool make sense at all?
n1000··on iPad 9.7‑inch
Apparently Apple doubled the storage.

n1000··on NASA proposes a magnetic shield to protect Mars' atmosphere
> The current scientific consensus is that, like Earth, Mars once had a magnetic field that protected its atmosphere. Roughly 4.2 billion years ago, this planet's magnetic field suddenly disappeared, which caused Mars' atmosphere to slowly be lost to space.

What kind of event could cause the loss of a planet's magnetic field?

I do it even though I have legal copies of Microsoft Office and Adobe software. It is incredible how often these apps send around data even while I am not using them and have no live.com account.
n1000··on If you don’t finish then you’re just busy, not productive
I also learned this the hard way recently. I have always been extremely busy. But finishing a large project, such as a PhD, forced me to learn that one needs to check at least 1 or 2 of these boxes on the todo list in the evening. Otherwise there has been no progress and, even worse, I will go home frustrated and have burned a lot of energy. Oh yeah, and ask a doctor about ADD.

n1000··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
The weird thing is that Apple did not use all the space they possibly could for the battery. Have a look at the teardowns. There is room to put ca. 5% more battery. Supposedly they wanted to stay below 3 pounds.

That is the amount the other RAM type would have used... So this was likely more about weight than battery life.

n1000··on MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar Teardown
I can see the marketing storyline: 3.0 pounds sounds cooler than 10+h battery life. Because: 10 hours = 1 working day = enough
n1000··on MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar Teardown
can anybody tell me why Apple didn't try harder to max out the battery?? apparently the 15" version has even more unused space:

https://9to5mac.com/2016/11/15/2016-macbook-pro-non-removabl...

if this is really a compromise to hit some weight target I will have to join the "Apple don't care about the Pros anymore" camp...

n1000··on Review: Touch Bar MacBook Pros give an expensive glimpse at the Mac’s future

n1000··on Why did ProtonMail vanish from Google search results for months?
Thanks for the insight. Makes me understand what is going on "on the other side". Although the message is a bit sad. If you don't scream loud enough it doesn't get fixed.

Steve Jobs seemed to have an ear or the 0.1% :) I am pretty certain one (rare) OSX bug got fixed because I emailed him.
