mwlp··on Learn electricity and electronics fundamentals without taking a formal course
I haven't watched any of the lectures, but there's also Georgia Tech's Analog Circuits for Music Synthesis https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOunECWxELQS5bMdWo9Vh...
mwlp··on Turtles, a Shelly/Zigbee home automation tool in Elixir
Eh, Elixir has just become my go-to for personal projects. GenServers, pattern matching, releases, being able to pop a shell into my program, the beautiful colors of the IEx shell... I miss all these things when choosing other languages. I also planned on eventually integrating it with a chatbot of mine which is also written in Elixir.
mwlp··on Turtles, a Shelly/Zigbee home automation tool in Elixir
Nice! I also control my lights using Elixir and a Hue bridge (through Home Assistant). https://github.com/Manwholikespie/mojodojo
mwlp··on Artificial General Intelligence – A gentle introduction
I'm glad to see Dr. Wang is still doing well. I had the pleasure of interviewing him for my high school journalism class back in 2015. Cool to see how far we've come since then.
mwlp··on Show HN: Text a photo to send as a postcard
Not an API, but still doable to a certain scale. I've gotten image input to work with my bot. Apple once temporarily banned me for suspicious activity but after a quick call to support they lifted it. If I got more traffic maybe they'd ban it again, I'm not sure.

You can text !help to sue [at] robertism.com to demo if you're interested.

mwlp··on Following UK antitrust order, Meta sells Giphy to Shutterstock for $53M
I find tenor's selection of gifs to be much better. I suspect Discord users are creating much of their content.
mwlp··on The Best Pens for 2023: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
My Pilot vanishing broke on me within about 2 months of use, sadly. I've since purchased a Sailor 1911 demonstrator which writes super smoothly. It's been my main pen for the past couple years, love it.
mwlp··on Personal Concierge Using OpenAI's ChatGPT via Telegram and Voice Messages
I added gpt to a bot of mine for Telegram and Discord a few weeks ago. I'm constantly amazed at how the littlest of things can spawn so many new opportunities for inside jokes and meta humor.
mwlp··on Freeform: a new app designed for creative collaboration
I can't name a single meaningful new feature that was added to OneNote in the past 8 years.
mwlp··on Ask HN: Interesting movies that explore AI?
Chappie, Tron Legacy. For anime, there's Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song.
mwlp··on DeepMind Dramatron: a new tool for writers to co-write theatre and film scripts
There's a game script I've tried writing a few times but never gotten far on. When I found this paper a few weeks ago my first idea was to see if it could help. I followed the prompt instructions using davinci-002, spending about $0.36 in total, and was a little disappointed in the results. Granted, to save credits, I deleted my previous inputs each time, so when it got to generating dialog for each of the scenes, "previous beat:" wasn't quite enough context to prevent lines from repeating themselves. I suppose these professional writers have better vision than I do if they think they can "take it to Netflix with a few edits". Maybe I'll try it again with ChatGPT.

The best AI written stories I've read have been in the character.ai chat rooms. The dialogue is amazingly natural. Just this morning I created a character of a disgraced syrup mascot out of two sentences from old advertisements. Auntie talked about noodling for catfish with a Gawr Gura bot until I was crying from laughter. Last week I made Gura talk with a "human" Mark Zuckerberg until I started hiccuping from laughter. Maybe it's my just my sense of humor.

Btw, did anyone else try to reproduce the results themselves prior to this tool? The PDF formatting was a little wonky so I tried seeing if anyone posted the plaintext prompts anywhere, only to find zero results on the internet. I'm thankful for the work being done here and will be following this closely. I wish I could have seen the plays live!

mwlp··on Gifaanisqatsi: A Random Koyaanisqatsi Generator
Awesome! Wasn’t aware this recording existed. I became a Glass fan after watching Leviathan (2014) featuring Akhenaten.

mwlp··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
In sophomore year of college, I came across a Japanese illustrator who sold sticker packs for messenger apps. I liked their art style a lot, to the point where I themed my entire computer setup (wallpaper/terminal/editor) around their work. Some friends and I worked on a project for an information retrieval class and their art continued to be a centerpiece for the website's theme, and we even jokingly snuck an image into our final paper.

As much as I loved their style, it seemed they rarely put out new content. A few weeks ago I trained a SD embedding on their work-- it was the coolest thing ever. I thought back to the class project, how I "stole" one of their artworks to use as the favicon. "Nobody outside this class will see this", I thought. But a pixel art anime girl wearing headphones was perfect branding for the app. "If I ever decide to publish this project, maybe I'll commission the artist for an official logo", I thought at the time. Now I wonder if I'd just use the SD embedding...

mwlp··on Whisper – open source speech recognition by OpenAI
Super impressive. I tested it on a Japanese streamer whose enunciation isn't exactly perfect and it did a decent job: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROiOU1scaNA

  [00:00.000 --> 00:06.500] Since the last one started, the number of times I've eaten has decreased.
  [00:06.500 --> 00:11.000] If I get too carried away with the last one, I'll get hungry and do it.
  [00:11.000 --> 00:14.500]  I don't have time to eat.
  [00:15.500 --> 00:18.000]  I'm going to eat now.
  [00:20.000 --> 00:23.000]  It's going to take about 10 minutes from here.
  [00:23.000 --> 00:31.000]  It's been a while since I've had my last meal.
  [00:31.000 --> 00:36.000]  I feel like I'm losing my女子力.
  [00:36.000 --> 00:39.000] I have to go back to my original self.
  [00:39.000 --> 00:44.000] I have to get ready and go to bed.
  [00:44.000 --> 00:46.000]  It's not good.
  [00:46.000 --> 00:51.000]  I've been drinking a lot lately, so I'm going home.
  [00:51.000 --> 00:53.000] I have to get my nails done this fall.
  [00:53.000 --> 00:54.000]  Halloween nails.
  [00:54.000 --> 00:57.000]  Halloween, Halloween, Halloween.
  [00:57.000 --> 00:59.000] I'm going to the beauty salon today.
  [00:59.000 --> 01:02.000] I'm going to get my nails done the day after tomorrow.
  [01:02.000 --> 01:10.000] I used to look at a lot of clothes, but I stopped looking at them.
  [01:10.000 --> 01:12.000]  I'm going crazy.
  [01:12.000 --> 01:22.000] My stomach's stopped in the middle of summer.
mwlp··on 1k True Fans? Try 100 (2020)
Rushia had five whales donating over $25k to her. I saw a Ninomae Inanis fan drop $30k in Ame's charity stream. Coco had fans that would use two or three alternate accounts to drop multiple $500 chats per stream.

I imagine them being faceless streamers does more to ease their anxiety than their fabricated persona. But my imagination doesn't come with a p-val so guess you'd have to ask them.

mwlp··on Ask HN: Where should I buy my next book?
Love Kinokuniya. What stationary do you get? I got some Tomoe River from Kino once upon a time and wasn’t impressed. I’m a big fan of MUJI but they don’t stock that so I normally settle for Rhodia when Michael’s has it on sale.

mwlp··on Embrace the Grind
Consider looking into a prescription for Jornay. It's taken at night and kicks in ~10 hours later, and will normally last me the entire work day. I've tried just about everything, using Ritalin for the longest, and I've found Jornay to be the least intrusive when it comes to my attitude, diet and work.
mwlp··on A record label bringing Iranian music to the world
I've been wanting to visit Iran ever since I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2LEgowbzSc , where a guy tells the story of him riding a Honda C90 through the country.
mwlp··on Daft Punk Break Up
When I was young, I would often visit my neighbor's house to play with legos or watch stop-motion lego videos on YouTube. One day I went over and his older sister was hosting a party where her and her friends all watched Interstella 5555. I don't think I've had a more culturally mind-melting experience since then.

I didn't rediscover Discovery until Tiesto's "Louder Than Boom" in a Tap Tap Revenge brought me into the world of electronic music. While many genres fell in and out of my taste growing up, electronic (and eventually French House in particular) never once faded. I'm infinitely thankful for Daft Punk and their art which has long been and will long be my chosen soundtrack for life.

mwlp··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
I've been working on a new version of [my iMessage bot](https://github.com/inculi/Sue) recently. Previously it was using Applescript handlers on Sierra, now sqlite calls to iMessage's chat.db (I have to give credit to another bot, [Jared](https://github.com/ZekeSnider/Jared) for help in this area).

I get latest messages with:

```
SELECT handle.id, handle.person_centric_id, message.cache_has_attachments, message.text, message.ROWID, message.cache_roomnames, message.is_from_me, message.date/1000000000 + strftime("%s", "2001-01-01") AS utc_date FROM message INNER JOIN handle ON message.handle_id = handle.ROWID WHERE message.ROWID > #{rowid};
```

and their attachments with:

```
SELECT attachment.ROWID AS a_id, message_attachment_join.message_id AS m_id, attachment.filename, attachment.mime_type, attachment.total_bytes FROM attachment INNER JOIN message_attachment_join ON attachment.ROWID == message_attachment_join.attachment_id WHERE message_attachment_join.message_id >= #{rowid};
```

where rowid is the max rowid from the previous search, and attachments with null mime_types get ignored (YouTube previews, etc). Sending through Applescript still.

mwlp··on Review: Lamy Safari (2008)
I'm a big fan of Lamy's design and quality. A pair of Al-Stars got me through HS and Uni.
mwlp··on Philosophy as Math-Like Thinking
I had similar thoughts after finishing an engineering ethics course. Everything is an argument. Strong arguments often demonstrate their superiority over alternatives. The more dimensions the problem context has (or, of course, the more alternatives), the more difficult this becomes. Luckily, arguments can usually be abstracted to ethical frameworks or philosophical traditions.

Sometimes these wrappers are easier to reason about. Sometimes, if the problem context is a foreign government's pending social credit system whose design and implementation is clouded by deceit and unknown consequences, all we can do is turn to Aristotle and ask, "[How] can we teach others to be good citizens?"

---

Don't take philosophy for the math-like thinking. Take math for that. Take it for the cool readings, discussions, and qt existentialist girls rarely found in compilers.

mwlp··on Keyboard with Trackpad for iPad Pro
I recently purchased a Ducky One 2 SF [1], which has built-in mouse functions. After remapping caps lock to Fn: left pinky + wasd for movement, q left click, e right click, r/f scroll. The default tracking speed is low, but thankfully iOS lets you change that. Configuring accessibility stuff to hide by default, you get a “mouse” when you need it and a pretty good keyboard when you don’t.

Other features: USB-C connector. It let me swap windows/alt-option so the command key is in the right place. Light weight plastic, but it’s Ducky so it still feels well built. Surprisingly, the silent red switches bottom-out quieter than my MacBook keys.

I leave you with my PgDn macro: sleep snug, smug.
