mwagstaff··on Why is it called Kent House?
Very random to see a post about my local station appear on the front page of HN.

If anyone wants a free iPhone app to check train times from Kent House (other stations are available, but may not be featured on HN), here's one Claude and I wrote:

mwagstaff··on Bluesky April 2026 Outage Post-Mortem
With my SRE hat on, dare I ask... could/should this have been picked up in testing?

And then normally there's a nice discussion about how production is very different to the test environment.

mwagstaff··on Hammerspoon
Can't live without Hammerspoon on Mac.

Can't live without AutoHotkey on Windows.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to both!

mwagstaff··on I built my own CityMapper
Unfortunately, I believe it's limited to TfL stations only (e.g. Overground) rather than National Rail.

Oh, and I should have mentioned that I'm also aware of this, but it's not free so automatically outside of my app development budget. :/

mwagstaff··on I built my own CityMapper
Very nice! I've also used the Rail Data Marketplace (terrible name) to build an app that uses the live departure board data (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/traintrack-uk/id6504205950), and it's great the data is freely available.

Whilst HN is on the case, does anyone know of an API (inside Rail Data Marketplace or elsewhere) that acts as a journey planner for UK national rail, i.e. you can input source + destination stations and it will output journey options?

mwagstaff··on UK demands access to Apple users' encrypted data
As a UK citizen, I'm hoping this is actually a backdoor effort by the US to hack into people's data rather then something our fine folks were pushing for.

Or at the very least, it's a starting point for negotiations around how best to stop bad actors without compromising user security.

mwagstaff··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
I have the earlier, smaller model of this, and it works well.

I've backed the new, bigger display, which should be shipping soon.

mwagstaff··on People hate the idea of car-free cities until they live in one
As someone who has worked in London for many years, the difference is amazing. Biking in the city is now enjoyable, and the air quality is (subjectively, even without the data) dramatically better.

There was an incredible resistance to the recently introduced ULEZ (Ultra Low Emissions Zone) expansion, but I'm incredibly grateful for the sake of my children, if nothing else, that it has been pushed through.

mwagstaff··on London mayor says Brexit has cost UK over $178B so far
Are you able to share any data to support that?
mwagstaff··on The Invisible Screen – An E-Paper Smart Display
I bought one of these a few months back. Excellent product, can definitely recommend.

Very simple, but very effective.

mwagstaff··on Icon Buddy – 100K+ Open Source SVG Icons, Fully Customizable
This is incredibly cool! :)

Hope you don't mind a very small feature request / suggestion... when viewing search results, it would be great if you could include a link to the parent collection for results (e.g. I see an icon I really like in the results, and want to know which collection it came from).

mwagstaff··on “Terrascope”: The possibility of using the Earth as an atmospheric lens (2019)
Great video, amazing science. This is the sort of project where you wish humanity could put aside its differences and collaborate to get it done, given its potential to fundamentally change the course of civilisation.

Maybe we can put ChatGPT in charge...? :P

mwagstaff··on We will not ‘walk out’ of UK, nor comply with any request to bypass encryption
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see where the bill explicitly recommends backdooring encryption?

The relevant paragraphs appear to be as follows, but the guidance looks quite vague...

257. The Government needs to provide more clarity on how providers with encrypted services should comply with the safety duties ahead of the Bill being introduced into Parliament.

258. We recommend that end-to-end encryption should be identifed as a specifc risk factor in risk profles and risk assessments. Providers should be required to identify and address risks arising from the encrypted nature of their services under the Safety by Design requirements.

mwagstaff··on Threeuk is blocking Tutanota
Slightly off topic, but I was with Three UK for a while. Reception was universally terrible, and trying to use mobile data was a joke.

This was in a small urban centre... called London. Would never, ever touch them again.

Back on topic, it seems that they are not using Bluecoat/Symantec Site review (which I suspect other providers do), which has the domain categorised correctly:

mwagstaff··on Network Rail Lifts and Escalators API
Anyone know if a lifts API exists for the tube and DLR? Can’t find anything obvious on the TfL site.
mwagstaff··on Show HN: Tired of mobile games with IAP and ads, I made No-Bullshit Games
Very nice :)
mwagstaff··on It's time to head back to RSS?
You can get RSS apps that will download the full articles for offline reading, including images.

I use Newsify with my Feedly account on the iPhone, and it’s perfect. Android clients are also available (sorry, can’t remember names).

mwagstaff··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2018)
Apple, Inc. | London | Full-time | Onsite

We're looking for an experienced SRE (Site Reliability Engineer) for the Apple Pay team in central London. More details here:

mwagstaff··on AnyBar: OS X menubar status indicator
+1 for Bitbar. Great tool, capable of displaying any console output in your menubar, so really easy to script in any language.
mwagstaff··on Kite – Programming Copilot
I tried Fish a while back, and liked it very much. Trouble is, I can't roll Fish out across a work server estate.

Well, I could. But then I probably wouldn't be at work much longer. ;-)

mwagstaff··on Kite – Programming Copilot
Agreed that this looks awesome. Seeing code completion and context sensitive help for running terminal commands (e.g. netstat), not just programming languages, was what made me hit the sign up button.
mwagstaff··on LinkedIn dark patterns, or why your friends keep spamming you to sign up for it
Fully agree with the article. Got caught out by the same nasty trick.

Unfortunately, LinkedIn serves a niche in the market for keeping in touch with ex work colleagues who you don't necessarily know well enough to connect with on Facebook. And to be fair, it's also a good way of getting a job nowadays.

If someone built a better intentioned, less spammy alternative, I think it would stand a good chance of succeeding.

mwagstaff··on Hammerspoon: A desktop automation tool for OS X
I love this tool. It's probably the closest thing (sorta) to AutoHotkey that exists for OSX.
mwagstaff··on Simpler syndication
Really cool work. Personally, I can really recommend Newsify as a top quality RSS reader on the iPhone. Great offline support, and it downloads the full articles with images as well.

Not affiliated, just a very happy customer.

mwagstaff··on Flux: A New Approach to System Intuition
Reminds me of Logstalgia, which was a cool log visualization tool for its time - http://logstalgia.io/
mwagstaff··on RobotJS – Node.js Desktop Automation
I hadn't heard of it before, and it does look potentially very powerful.

My only initial concern from reading the quick start (http://www.sikulix.com/quickstart.html) is the apparent requirements to use the "SikuliX IDE" for scripting...

mwagstaff··on RobotJS – Node.js Desktop Automation
Despite its many syntax quirks, AutoHotkey is an amazingly powerful tool for automating Windows keyboard and mouse input - I use it daily at work.

Having an equivalent tool on the Mac would be awesome, as I don't think anything in AutoHotkey's class exists right now...

mwagstaff··on Scrawl – A modern, cross-platform C#, VB.NET and JavaScript IDE
Looks nice but as a current Sublime user, I'd like to know about plugin support.

It may be because I'm only able to see the mobile site, but whilst I can see a mention of "themability", I can't see any mention of extensibility via third-party plugins.

mwagstaff··on GoJS: Interactive Diagrams for the Web
Looks nice. I also recommend taking a look at http://visjs.org (no affiliation, other than a happy user).
mwagstaff··on Holy Shit, I Interviewed the President
As a Brit, I feel that the BBC is considered pretty legitimate as a respected news source, despite being old and decidedly non-hip. They normally seem to report impartial facts, which works for me (but seemingly not the likes of Fox/MSNBC).

We also have shows similar to the Daily Show (e.g. Have I got news for you) which come along and take the mickey out of the news as well, just to be on the safe side.
