I believe the idea behind diversity initiatives is to ensure that the starting pool of 100 people is representative of larger demographics. Women make up ~50% of Carnegie Mellon's undergraduate computer science department (for instance). It's not like there's a dearth of qualified women.

You can't really legally work anywhere at 13/14 -- I would totally recommend involving yourself with open source communities, joining a hackerspace, or looking for tech-related non-profit organizations that are interested in volunteers. Google Summer of Code might be a good option for you!

It's true that there are a lot of variables when asking broad questions like what causes poor health, but it seems like the majority of the participants weren't of a lower-socioeconomic demographic, as indicated in the article.

The particular instance I was thinking of when writing my response was pretty blatant! I was around 15 or 16, and sitting on a public bench at the university I was taking classes at. A man sat down at an adjacent bench. He was literally turning his head 90 degrees to stare at me for minutes at a time, and whenever I would make eye contact he would immediately look straight ahead. He started inching towards my bench. I inched away. He tried to talk to me, and I politely excused myself and went to go study somewhere else.

I mean, there's a difference between looking at someone because they're talking or you're engaging in the meeting with them and staring directly at their boobs. I've been in situations where people are obviously gawping at me and it's incredibly uncomfortable and it's a much, much different experience than when they're idly looking around a conference room because they're bored.

Ah yes, I definitely want this company with a super-insecure app to handle my money. If they fix Snapchat's API vulnerabilities (from 2013!) maybe I'd consider it.

Was also exempted from one year of classes--currently doing something similar but with Art + CS. Definitely would recommend to anyone--more time to do research and such outside of your classes!

Stumbled upon HN when I was around 14-15 (took me a while to work up the nerve to make an account)! Had been fairly familiar with ESR's Hacker Manifesto at that point (probably found that at around age 11?), and I think I was searching for something related to that? I've been reading it fairly consistently since. Was and still am a fan of the interesting random links, though I've been enjoying the technical ones a bit more in my "old" age.

Hi! I just graduated high school, but spent most of my time hanging out in research labs at a university. If you happen to live close to a public university/college, I would recommend seeing if you can take classes (some states in the U.S. allow for students to take university level classes for free, don't know what the policies are for where you live!) or working with some of the labs. High school is horribly dull, but if you find a way to make it work for you, it can lead to larger opportunities and allow for you to build up a CV/resume while enjoying teenager-y things like school clubs/sports.

That being said, I didn't realize that YouTube was funding original channels! I'm reminded of the talk Dan Harmon (creator of the television series "Community") gave regarding the death of television/the Internet as a new platform for stories [1]. The majority of people already consume television shows on the internet, I'd love to see a larger shift towards an internet-only tv series model.

I think the point was less to be politically correct and more to personalize the game towards his daughter. He seems to really care about video games and wants to create the best possible experience for his daughter so that she can share that love. A large part of video games is basically pretending to be the character you're controlling, and a three year old girl who renamed the character after herself is generally going to pretend to be herself.

Over-exercising addiction actually has serious consequences on people's health, as it causes stress fractures that are often exacerbated by them trying to "power through it". That being said, few people actually have this sort of problem, and one shouldn't avoid the gym simply out of fear of becoming addicted.

A good friend of mine hangs out with the 7x7 cube champion of the United States. He plays with various different kinds of Rubik's cubes, and from what I gather cubing can also get rather addicting.
