msiyer··on Tech Companies Are Deleting Evidence of War Crimes
Is this really a technology problem? Are we so naive that we believe these things were not happening in the past?

This problem cannot be solved in the consciousness we currently exist in.

The people running the world and those who ought to run it are entirely different.

msiyer··on Boeing Believed a 737 Max Warning Light Was Standard
This is "crime against humanity" level of corporate bullshit. I think, they saved a lot of money by neglecting thorough testing. Also, like in all large corporates, they have n number of departments with terrible infighting and consequentially poor communication.
msiyer··on Welcome to Shanghai, the capital of the future
Agree totally. Intelligence without wisdom is a recipe for disaster.
msiyer··on Gold worth billions smuggled out of Africa
>> Many of these resource-rich countries are politically unstable and lack the infrastructure to attract legitimate foreign investment

This is by design.

msiyer··on Breach at IT Outsourcing Giant Wipro
Google, Facebook, CIA, Pentagon... all have been hacked.

> All the great people are immediately hired by the company they’re actually working for, so they’re always left with the mediocre and terrible.

By "great people" I assume you mean the best talent. I assume you also mean that corporate politics (bootlicking, backstabbing, parasitic behaviour...) has no role to play in these hirings.

msiyer··on Julian Assange Deserves First Amendment Protection
You make me laugh. You are either naive or a troll.
msiyer··on Julian Assange Deserves First Amendment Protection
>> if you're so huffy about war crimes, why do you pay your taxes? because doesn't that make you complicit?

No, because I do not have a choice. If I refuse, the system will use violence against me.

msiyer··on Julian Assange Deserves First Amendment Protection
You sound like an agent of the system. The authoritarian mindset is the reason why the whole system is so violent and morally bankrupt.
msiyer··on Fat, Not Meat, May Have Led to Bigger Hominin Brains
Poisons in very low quantity are used to treat diseases. Could it be that Ayurveda uses milk to treat the imbalance of the "doshas"?

As a food, Ghee was used so very sparingly that it was almost not used at all. We cannot compare the quantities we consume today with those before the Dairy Revolution.

msiyer··on Fat, Not Meat, May Have Led to Bigger Hominin Brains
How can bone marrow be one of the first human foods? Humans had to learn the use of tools first to access bone marrow. Humans needed a better brain to figure out how to create and use tools.

Also, predators are very intelligent. They can and will break open bones. Domestic dogs do that. Hyenas are renowned for their bone-crushing abilities.

Bone marrow is not the only source of fat. There are plenty of plant-based foods rich in fat

msiyer··on Facebook 'mistakenly deleted' years of Mark Zuckerberg's old Facebook posts
Their famous interview process picks only the best and the brightest in the cosmos, but these geniuses cannot perform proper backups of data in a company whose bread and butter is data?

What a load of bullshit.

msiyer··on KDE Usability and Productivity: Week 63
Plasma 5 is my Desktop Environment on all machines capable enough to handle it. Xfce for all others.

I love the configurability and theming capabilities. Dolphin, Okular and Spectacle are just incredible. I do not use Discover at all.

On Arch Linux, I have had no troubles in the past 5-6 months. The quality is pretty high.

I thank the KDE/Plasma community for enriching the world with their contributions.

msiyer··on Kdenlive: an open-source video editor
www.pitivi.org is a very good video editor. All videos on my YouTube channel (Two-wheel Therapy) are edited using Pitivi.

It is simple, so am I.

I use Arch Linux as my OS.

msiyer··on Colin O’Brady Completes Crossing of Antarctica with Final 32-Hour Push
This model is good.

To me, the whole point of doing something like this is that there is no point. It matters, at the moment, to the guy doing it and that is all that matters.

A couple of years back, I rode my motorcycle for 18 hours with only fuel breaks. 8 hours of the ride was in 40+ degree Celsius heat and the next 10 hours I had to endure the monsoons. I loved the whole experience. What did I gain from it? In the grand scheme of things, nothing. Will I do it again? Yes, already planning another trip.

Life seems pointless to me. I just try to have some fun along the way.

msiyer··on Nassim Taleb on why IQ is baloney
Human brain is a technological marvel. We know too little about it to measure its properties accurately. IQ tests do measure "something", but it does not give us a useful picture.

Analogy: We can use an electron as a wave or as a particle, but have very little understanding of what they truly are.

msiyer··on Plastic Water Bottles, Which Enabled a Drinks Boom, Now Threaten Industry
No solution that involves plastic is a solution.

Plastics can cause diseases by contaminating the food and drinks they contain. Let us keep this aside for a moment.

Recycling\reusing requires a lot of infrastructure and political will. This may work well in Western nations. What about the third world? I can assure you it will not. Third world polluting the waterways will have consequences for Western nations too. Pollution may begin as a local problem, but it always becomes global sooner than later.

msiyer··on Johnson and Johnson knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its Baby Powder
Exactly. Nobody is surprised. I have asked my coworkers many times to stop using these poisons on their kids. They do not listen. They do not care. One reply that I often listen to is:

"Everything has pesticides in it. If we start caring about these things, we may as well stop living."

Well, I did what I could. The consequences are yours to bear.

msiyer··on Fragmentation Is Why Desktop Linux Failed [video]
First impression is the...

DE being the first thing a common user interfaces with, it holds a very important position, in my opinion. KDE and Gnome are very different w.r.t design principles, hence the polarization and debate. KDE and Xfce are not so different. I like Gnome, but have no use for it.

I agree with all else.

Also, I think, a real "free market" would resemble Linux ecosystem. No monopoly, small players and lots of choices. However, if we wish to compete in "real world", we need to do something similar to what you say.

msiyer··on Fragmentation Is Why Desktop Linux Failed [video]
Considering what KDE has achieved with Plasma 5, I am really happy. I use Plasma 5 on all my machines that are capable enough to handle it. Gnome 3, consequently, has never found a place. On old machines, I use Xfce only. Xfce is, in no way, for the masses. Plasma 5 could easily be the Desktop Environment that everyone loves, if they continue to improve.

I have helped people migrate from Windows to Plasma 5. They loved it. However, getting\installing software and general system management is still not straightforward enough. We also need system management tools that are solid. No terminal gymnastics at all for the common user on distros targeted at the masses.

Flatpak is all cool, but we need core user-space applications to be standardized. LibreOffice, for example, needs to become the industry standard office-suite. How can we achieve that? People I know just do not want to move away from MS Office. Even government agencies invest heavily in MS Office. This might just be the most important impediment.

I think, the Linux ecosystem shows us what a real "free market" looks like. Lots of small players and no monopoly. People love choices and they have. You want a minimal Window Manager, you got many to choose from. You want a full-blown Desktop Environment, you are spoilt for choice. Not a bad thing in an ideal world, but...

msiyer··on FreeBSD 12.0 is now available
My 10 year old Dell XPS M1330 with Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 and 4 GB RAM with original HDD still running strong, had 11.2 installed on it. I just finished updating it to 12.0 release without any issues. I have only good things to say. I use Xfce. The filesystem is ZFS.

A while back, I took a snapshot of /root and installed Gnome 3. It was too big for my laptop. I rolled back. The snapshot and rollback were amazingly fast.

I find FreeBSD more cohesive. I have not tried it on modern devices, but my experience with it on my decade old laptop and VMs is extremely positive.

A similar cohesiveness is achieved only when I handcraft my Arch. Maybe, it is just the feeling.

msiyer··on Facebook accused of striking 'secret deals over user data'
Actually nothing wrong at all. Organizations also become kind-of living entities and self-preservation becomes paramount.

Nature maintains balance because it is not invested in the future of any species in particular. Nature cannot be manipulated emotionally. No psychological tricks work.

Society is supposed to play the same role. However, society delegates this responsibility to an elected few. Neither the society nor the elected few are immune from manipulation at different levels.

Summary: The governing system has to be unemotional, like Nature. In such a system, anti-competitive (or any other type) behaviors may yield results in short-term, but over a period of time, such a system becomes a great leveler.

For example, even with all our progress and monopoly over earth's resources, we are just one great flood away from going back to stone age.

msiyer··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
Please read the definitions clearly. How can an animal product be vegetarian? Does it even make sense?

Ovo-vegetarianism = eggs + vegetarian food. This is certainly not eggs = vegetarian.

msiyer··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
Eggs are not vegetarian.
msiyer··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
I am not surprised at all. I am from India. Most people I knew in my childhood were vegetarians. I knew a few wrestlers who practiced in the "akhadas" of Varanasi. Big guys, all "Hanuman" devotees, celibates (Brahmacharis) and vegetarians. Sushil Kumar the wrestler, Olympics medal winner, is a vegetarian: https://www.petaindia.com/blog/sushil-kumar/

EDIT: People are getting triggered left and right. Man, this is the truth in the East. We were\are mostly vegetarians. Only recently did we start eating western food. Only recently did we see people getting terribly obese and chronically sick.

msiyer··on Type 2 diabetes: NHS to offer 800-calorie diet treatment
Raw fruits are what I feed her. No vegetables at all. I started giving her some steamed potatoes recently. Bananas have become her staple food.
msiyer··on Type 2 diabetes: NHS to offer 800-calorie diet treatment
My mother suffered Type-2 diabetes for almost 20 years. I put her on an extremely strict raw food diet three months ago and stopped injecting insulin. Her fasting blood sugar level is now in the 90-110 mg/dL range. I now give her some steamed potatoes also.

I too follow the same diet to give her company.

Elimination of oil, sugar and dairy has helped, I believe. She is a vegetarian, so flesh was never in the picture. I do not have to restrict calories with raw food. Eat as much as you can.

No juicing, however. That is a totally not allowed.

msiyer··on Twilight of the Taj Mahal
> Almost any economy where buying is expensive, renting works out cheaper.

Cheaper than buying. In the short term, maybe.

You make property ownership look like slavery while renters seem to be just enjoying the ride.

If it is so hard and unrewarding to build rental properties it seems landlords are just addicted to losing money.

msiyer··on Twilight of the Taj Mahal
Income tax is ridiculous. Especially in India with the stats I presented.

How exactly are tenants getting the better end of the deal? It is the tenenat who:

- pays the rent which is arbitrarily high and increases every year thereby offsetting the puny salary hikes

- bears the burden of excess tax because the landlord refuses to pay taxes on money earned from rent

- has nothing to show for the money spent in rent

- loses a large part or whole of the "security desposit" when shifting.

Taxes are high because a minister decides to charter a plane and fly thousands of miles to meet another minister for 30 minutes. Taxes are high because when they meet they decide to exchange bouquets that cost tens of thousands of rupees. I can go on and on...

msiyer··on Twilight of the Taj Mahal
> You salary is taxed at 35% effectively

This is what is directly visible. Less than 3% of the population pays income tax while tax is deducted at source for the salaried class:

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/why...

If you dare to save, the interest earned is taxed. If you try to spend, the spending is taxed - buy a house or a car or a motorcycle, all luxury items by Indian government's standards, you are taxed heavily. The bribes collected by the government officials increase the tax burden. By the way, bribes are now expected and people refusing to take or give are looked down upon: https://www.deccanchronicle.com/nation/current-affairs/21111...

All this while the mega rich are enjoying tax breaks.

> rent seekers who will push for a 10% increases Y-o-Y unless

The landlords are fleecing tenants. However, it is the tenants' responsibility to make sure the landowner pays tax: https://www.livemint.com/Money/hfutqMoI7miJYiIidCNV4M/If-mon...

msiyer··on Twilight of the Taj Mahal
The monument is being neglected. The current government has an attitude which is very similar to ”not invented here" whereby anything not created by Hindus is not to be valued: https://www.firstpost.com/india/yogi-adiyanath-govt-in-uttar...

Hinduism is not a religion like Islam or Christianity. People in India behave as if it is. Our past was glorious. It, however, cannot guarantee a similar future unless people wake up.
