mrtimo··on SAP Graph: API Sandbox on preview
Agree, although I feel like I never fell out of love. Honest question, why has excitement waned? Or has it?
mrtimo··on Apple acquires Dark Sky
Came here searching for alternative. Didn't find one in the comments so I did some probing. Open Weather Map looks like a decent alternative to Dark Sky: https://rapidapi.com/blog/dark-sky-vs-openweathermap/
mrtimo··on Clayton Christensen has died
I heard Clayton Christensen speak at an "honors dinner" my freshman year of university in 2000. I asked him what interesting things he did when he was a university student. He said he would get together with his friends once a week - and each would take 10-15 minutes to present the most interesting thing they had learned that week.

He also organized a university wide book club - including making books available at designated tables in the cafeteria, and hosting the author for a speaking event. "Guns Germs and Steel" was popular at the time, and he used that as an example of the type of book they would read.

Everyone knows about the Disruptive Innovation, but he also wrote "Disrupting Class" on how disruptive innovations would change universities/education - and put some out of business. On this vein he founded the Christensen Institute [1] a non-profit (in Redwood City, CA). I don't know a ton about it, but I've really enjoyed the research/ideas posted on their blog over the years!

Some here have posted about his faith. I've always thought it was bold that he had a four page PDF on his personal website [2] about his faith [3].

mrtimo··on Tiananmen Square: China minister defends 1989 crackdown
Neither were blocked.
mrtimo··on Tiananmen Square: China minister defends 1989 crackdown
I'm reading this thread while in a hotel a block away from the square in China (not on VPN, because that has not been working due to political events). Of course the BBC article is blocked. The thirtieth anniversary of the event is tomorrow.

Interesting that HN is not blocked.

mrtimo··on How Zapier Reached $35M ARR
Any guesses as to when they will be acquired and by whom? I'm wondering to myself if the founders are interested in this... I'd like to see the product grow, so I hope not!
mrtimo··on A map of publicly available fruit trees, mostly in Slovakia
This is incredible. Works in my city in Washington state very well! Does not have raspberries or other berries, however.
mrtimo··on Using old laptop batteries to build homemade powerwalls
Honest question, I thought they were 3.6 volt cells?
mrtimo··on We're learning more about the craving that fuels self-defeating habits
Thanks. This was brilliant! At first I was annoyed by the interviewer, but she made some great analogs with her comments!
mrtimo··on Launch HN: Solve (YC S17) – We Save International Travelers Hours of Time
T-mobile (Post-paid) has free international data and SMS... works in 100s of countries. No extra cost. This is the sole reason I am a customer.

The data is slow, but definitely good enough. It is good enough to use google hangouts to call phones back in the states.

mrtimo··on CityBikes: bike sharing networks around the world
Just spent 3 weeks in 6 cities in China. Ofo and Mobike seems to be the biggest bike share companies. There is also a company that makes electric bikes (with hub motor) available for bike share.

How they work: 1. Pay a deposit (99 RMB for Ofo, 299 RMB for Mobike) and register 2. Scan the QR code to unlock the bike -Mobike will unlock automatically- Ofo will send a pin to your phone that you can use to unlock the bike. 3. When you are done, just lock up your bike (rear wheel) and leave it anywhere.

In Shanghai it was common to see incensed security Guards dragging bikes off premises. Bikes definitely do clutter up precious walking space.

Fellow teacher here, what method (tools) do you use to teach SQL via SQLlite?
mrtimo··on I'm at Fog Creek, and we're introducing Gomix
I found this post with examples of things recently built with gomix quite illustrative: https://medium.com/gomix/what-can-you-build-on-gomix-557e380...
mrtimo··on Show HN: Javvy – A fun way to learn Java on iOS and Android
I teach a beginning Java course at the university. I told my students to install your app... Apparently it's not free after a point... if you need testers, I have 40 students that are available.

mrtimo··on Ask HN: What are the most beautifully written tutorials for beginners?
OP here. Thanks for all the great comments. This is becoming a good resource. Here is a list of tutorials that I had my undergrad students do. Some are from MSDNA... https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hNliZd6kp1YBfDKQucnK8cV0...
mrtimo··on Winamp 2 in HTML5
I remember telling my 10th grade US History teacher about Winamp. He installed it on his classroom computer - he and I were a bit embarrassed when it played "Really whips the llama's ass" for a few students to hear. Good memories!
mrtimo··on Meteor hits 1.0

mrtimo··on Amazon releases new Kindle products
totally agree. maybe amazon is actually trying to make a profit?
mrtimo··on The Awful Reign of the Red Delicious
Red delicious are actually quite good right after they are picked.

Perhaps the reason why we don't like Red delicious is the 'paradox of choice'. 40 years ago, there were perhaps 4 varieties of apples on average in a grocery store, today perhaps 9 or 10. Perhaps with the sweeter, crispier apples brought by advances in Agri-tech the Red Delicious has become lackluster in comparison.

mrtimo··on Apple – Live – September 2014 Special Event
Chinese finally went away at 10:30
mrtimo··on State Incentives Bringing SpaceX Commercial Launch Facility to Texas
I lived in Cameron County 11 years ago. One of the poorest counties in the USA. The joke down there is, "I love living here because it is so close to the United States!"

Most people in the USA don't realize how far south texas goes. This place is 6 hours south of Houston and 4 hours south of San Antonio. Nice to see this investment made! Excited to go back and visit.

mrtimo··on Paw – HTTP and REST API Tester for Mac
on the page, I can't see anything in the "code generation" section
mrtimo··on Show HN: Ratatouille is an app to share your extra food
Not trying to hijack, but I'm working on a complimentary idea, that is much less developed. See the MVP: http://producebuddy.com

It is an app that updates weekly with the sale prices of fruits and vegetables in your area (currently phoenix only). This will be most useful for Walmart price matchers -- which is actually a surprising number of people.

mrtimo··on Hackathon Starter – Boilerplate for Node.js web application
signed up for your beta, was a bit confused there was no confirmation of sign up (email, or web) as it just returns to the homepage.
