mrmetanoia··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
I hadn't read about this concept - it's interesting.

It was really heart breaking coming up in the hacker culture of the late 80s through the 90s, then seeing the potential of "Don't be evil" Google, when it became clearer and clearer that no, hackers hadn't penetrated the capitalist class it was more the other way round. The only "disruption" was a set of new levers for the bankers, handed over freely by people eager to join them.

mrmetanoia··on Windows Control Panel set for deprecation
Why is it quite clear to you? You can't just refute people's valid concerns over loss of functionality and deprecating something while advocating a replacement without feature parity by saying 'it's quite clear to me' - you sound ridiculous.

To your last point about how it will change at a rapid pace, when has MS done this for something for advanced users? I don't believe rapid development of Settings is going to kick into gear because of this because that seems not at all like the Microsoft we deal with today, they move very slow on power user features while going full speed on integrating "AI" and various junk in my menu bar - why would you believe Settings will be a priority?

mrmetanoia··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
This really hurts to think - that so many people are only doing the decent thing because of consequence :(
mrmetanoia··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
I struggle also. I love that PA comic! I often tell my wife when we get someone who starts throwing in Rocket League, "you wouldn't do this if you walked down to the park for a pickup game of basketball - nobody would ever play with you again. you would look like a moron." and maybe that's it. there's no meaningful consequence? It's sad though to think so many people are only being compelled to do the decent thing to avoid consequences and eschew decent behavior as soon as they enter a consequence free zone? Just breaks my heart really, because I thought we did these things for fun lol
mrmetanoia··on Artificial intelligence is losing hype
Yeah I think there's an empty marketing driven hype that will die off, but I think we're going to start to see it continue to integrate into peoples real life workflows and competition's going to heat up in delivering more consistently reliable results.

with regard to art AI, I think the debates are going to die off and the artists and people making stuff are going to just keep doing that, and some of them will use AI in ways that will challenge people in ways good art often does.

mrmetanoia··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
I've mentioned this in other comments, but I sat in with my nephews on a Roblox session, then stayed after to check things out on my own. There's an astounding number of adults on that platform saying some of the most horrible things.

The games are like you say, and there's some that are indeed the model of what I expected: games that kids and amateurs made with their tools. Car jump games. Simple platforming. Basic shooters. But then there are games that seem like they're some dark pattern mobile devs side projects lol Games where you do nothing but collect stuff or pets and there's lots of gratification devices happening and suddenly there's just a literal pay wall. Just the worst of f2p gambling addiction built right into player built roblox games over and over and over again.

But on to the adults, my favorite example was joining a 'shooter' game that was really just a shooting gallery of sorts but it had voice chat enabled and wtf there's some eastern european accent going off on gay people and talking about how the targets should have sombreros so 'we' can shoot "lazy" Mexicans.

That experience was replicated through a few games and I just wrote Roblox off completely as infested with people trying to help kids find hate based ideologies or get them addicted to gambling. I warned their mother, she didn't listen til she got her credit card stolen.

mrmetanoia··on China's manufacturers are going broke
I regularly read The Economist and it is not a flawless outlet but it does not and has not attempted to perpetuate any sort of collapse narrative about China. Individual opinion pieces with negative outlooks based on current global market context? Perhaps, but an overarching narrative of collapse just doesn't exist.
mrmetanoia··on X ordered to pay €550k to Irish employee fired after yes-or-resign ultimatum
My German co-workers have the healthiest relationship with work in the company because it seems they feel empowered to set boundaries. I often wonder if it's a commonality in Germany? It doesn't seem like perfection, they complain about things too, but it seems healthier to a degree from this vantage.

And it's amazing how much nonsense they don't have to deal with just because The business will make the Americans do it so as to avoid a works council hassle :P I'd like a works council that makes my management pause before they load me up with extra work on top of my normal tasks.

What's sad is the people who get frustrated by the German's not having to deal with the bullshit and instead of thinking "we should have that!" they think "They should NOT have that!"

humans are weird.

mrmetanoia··on Interviewing the Interviewer: Questions to Uncover a Company's True Culture
It's like they've started applying that 'value based' pricing bullshit to salaries.
mrmetanoia··on Banks Are Now Accused of Cheating Customers Billions
Yeah, it's a bit of a war of attrition.
mrmetanoia··on Tom Cruise is dangerous and irresponsible (2005)
I agree, it seems like experience varies. I fixate quite thoroughly on things for decent stretches. ADHD is a slight misnomer because I don't have an attention deficit, I have selective intense attention. It appears as a deficit because I can't control the focus and if I'm not working on what someone watching me thinks I should they think "that guy can't focus!" In reality, I'm exceptionally focused on something else and without my medication, the odds of me redirecting that focus are almost zero.

If it weren't for the need to occasionally comply for work etc, "ADHD" would be pretty neat and fun. Being mercurial and intense can be isolating, though.

I get interested, I seek out the most direct and as far as I'm able to gauge, best information related to the task I'd like to complete and I consume as much as I can about it until it's done or I'm bored. Or something else takes the intensity. I can juggle 2-3 intense interests at a time, this helps keep them going longer as I'll shift from one to the other if I hit a wall.

mrmetanoia··on Tom Cruise is dangerous and irresponsible (2005)
I wouldn't get stuck on it. Scientology is in LA for the movie stars, Tom Cruise is a movie star that got sucked into Scientology, because they like to recruit movie stars. I wouldn't pass that burden on to the whole city of the Olympics.
mrmetanoia··on Study shows that tacking the “AI” label on products may drive people away
The advertisements for co-pilot during the Olympics were laughably bad. An attempt at the sentimental and way overplayed trope of people using search/apps interwoven with touching life moments. In this one though, it was all a bunch of sports related achievements they had to really stretch to tie back to co-pilot. Someone using it to make a chart tracking heart rate - like I'd put any health data in that thing.

Then you have Google writing letters for your children or showing how their camera AI integrations can help you live a lie. Frankly I'm glad to see data showing consumers are turned off.

Oh! And then for the executives they have Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba talking about data security and productivity.

mrmetanoia··on Burning Man is struggling to sell tickets
Bloomberg writing about whether or not you've peaked is peak been peaked awhile ;)
mrmetanoia··on Türkiye Bans Roblox
My nephews were into it. I tried to play with them and there were not a ton of real games. Some fun like driving maps people had made just to crash and jump ramps, some shooting gallery things. The thing that concerned me was the amount of games that were obvious gambling type stimulation. Games where you do nothing but collect coins or points to get a shot at a pet or piece of loot, but then block access after a few free hits with a timed wall that could be removed for robux.

The other thing that concerned me was the amount of adults there just to 'play' i joined a shooting 'game' (just a bunch of stuff to shoot and guns laying around) and there was voice chat included and some guy with an eastern european accent making homophobic jokes and talking about how someone should add lazy mexicans as targets. Not uncommon online, but roblox I had at one time thought was trying to be a childrens platform, boy was I wrong.

I let my SIL know she might want to keep them off that or be present whenever they play. She did not listen until one of my nephews stole her credit card and used it to buy a bunch of crap online.

mrmetanoia··on Baron who revived Olympics believed they were a religion of perfection and peace
This kind of ignorance serves no one but hate mongers.
mrmetanoia··on Baron who revived Olympics believed they were a religion of perfection and peace
We need more things that connect the world this way, but they only work if you can set aside the cynicism a bit or at least see the good and the bad and enjoy the good when appropriate and try to fix the bad when appropriate. It's been genuinely fun watching this year and just enjoying the competition and surrounding celebration and coverage.
mrmetanoia··on GTA 3 is being ported to the Sega Dreamcast
"...helping us stick it to the PS2..."

Cool project, but what an inane concept.

mrmetanoia··on Can reading make you happier? (2015)
one of my college English professors would say 'reading makes your soul grow big,' something he said he heard from a friends dad. it's stuck with me.
mrmetanoia··on The U.S. wanted to knock down Huawei. It's only getting stronger
It also just seems unnecessarily hostile as a headline - the US banned/sanctioned them after seemingly valid security concerns. It wasn't like they just said 'hahaha let's knock down Huawei!' Nobody likes to have to replace a vendor ;)

I'd speculate someone somewhere at these Chinese companies has to be thinking like Dr. Evil's henchmen after turning his empire into legit successful businesses worth more than the evil schemes he cooks up.

"ugh do we have to put backdoors in, they're gonna figure it out eventually and we're already making money, what's the point of this again? Down with our enemies or something?"

mrmetanoia··on Australia starts peanut allergy treatment for babies

mrmetanoia··on Lewis Lapham has died
Loved his writing and curation. 89's a good run, but I'll miss him being around.
mrmetanoia··on Hosting the Olympics has become financially untenable, economists say
Was it a disaster? My wife and I thought it was lovely and pretty cool.
mrmetanoia··on The New Internet
Wouldn't the point be they're an indecent, possibly bad, actor by default since they're a business at all rather than just creating or contributing to protocols/standards to resolve the issues their product relies on to exist? The only way they could be a good actor is if they're using the money from their sales to fund that initiative with a plan to obsolete themselves.

I suppose if you follow that thread though a lot of businesses just shouldn't exist except for fulfilling the need they fill for the sake of those in need.

mrmetanoia··on Ask HN: I built a Yubikey-based domain controller. Is it sellable?
Yes
mrmetanoia··on Ask HN: I built a Yubikey-based domain controller. Is it sellable?
I was about to say this sounds like our on prem PAM setup which is integrated with our idp - or some mixture of things folks are asking about. Seems like this is something largely solved regardless of how it's being done, but maybe we're all missing something. Or maybe his implementation is just that slick.
mrmetanoia··on Shape of Motion: 4D Reconstruction from a Single Video
I liked Cloud Atlas, I should watch it again. It was weird and ambitious.
mrmetanoia··on Why Americans aren't having babies
I just don't think I'd be all that happy as a father. I feel like I'm in a constant struggle to claim as much time as I can for things that aren't paid work and sleep that interest me, and a kid has never been on that list of interests so I don't want to have one and then resent it consuming more of my time.

I just like to think and make stuff while I listen to music, I don't want to be responsible for picking a child up or dropping it off or feeding it. And, I'm not particularly concerned with how long we perpetuate our human nonsense.

I don't hate life, but I don't know that I'd have picked it for myself and I don't feel strongly about forcing it on anybody else.

mrmetanoia··on CrowdStrike broke Debian and Rocky Linux months ago
I agree - and in that case I'd bet a lot of Linux and open source etc is written by professionals to some degree that's likely significant.
mrmetanoia··on Global IT outage shows dangers of cashless society, campaigners say
the lack of privacy at a business isn't a problem baked into cash. cash helps solve that problem because I don't need to go to a place of business to use it. It can be exchanged anywhere in reasonable amounts, and I don't have to deposit it I can just keep it and use it.

my wife and I always keep some cash on hand in case of some sort of problem with the card, or tap device etc. never had my cash declined because a computer thought some other purchases that afternoon looked suspicious.
