mrgreenfur··on Consent-O-Matic – automatically fills ubiquitous pop-ups with your preferences
Hopefully this is handled in the upcoming eprivacy regulation that intends to move the opt-in choices from individual websites to the browser: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:52...
mrgreenfur··on Ask HN: What is the least obnoxious way to ask for cookie permissions?
Might as well press decline the , same behavior
mrgreenfur··on Ask HN: What is the least obnoxious way to ask for cookie permissions?
Actually not true, the regulation (eprivacy directive /pecr in uk) applies to all trackers including cookies, pixels, scripts, etc. if you can do with only “strictly necessary” across those then youre right.

Also consider visitors are used to these prompts, without one they may wonder: does this site follow the law?

mrgreenfur··on Ask HN: Why don’t web browsers answer cookie questions?
This is the goal of the gpc project: https://globalprivacycontrol.org/
mrgreenfur··on If everyone is verified, no one is verified
This reminds me of ssl certs: you can pay for a basic cert or one with identity verification. Most users don’t check identity verification but its super important. To prevent scams, not security per se. Twitter doesn’t even offer an id verification service: maybe for $50/yr they should confirm who the poster is and forbid imposters from poaching your name.
mrgreenfur··on Ask HN: Ways to make and old car safer?
How do i improve my windscreen? Its all scratched and makes driving night and direct sunlight annoying.
mrgreenfur··on Tell HN: Common Misconceptions About Cookies and Consent
"It is illegal in the EU (GDPR) and US (CANSPAM) to send promotional email to people who have opted out."
mrgreenfur··on Stripe releases Plaid-like project, Plaid CEO objects to process
I agree but what do you mean by " definition they must be stored reversibly-encrypted"?
mrgreenfur··on My Bose QC-35 II headphones burst into flames and left me with chemical burns
Yeah; I agree with you and am responding to the other poster who was ignoring the reality of OP to blame the victim.
mrgreenfur··on Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry?
Blanket on a smoker? Can you tell me about that? Never thought to use one but have heard of people making insulating jackets
mrgreenfur··on Amazon Says Labor, Fulfillment Costs May Wipe Out Holiday Profit
Yes, that is better because it is more competitive and gives other ecommerce a better chance to grow.
mrgreenfur··on The Law of Shitty Clickthroughs (2012)
This will work because the goggles and associated services are freely given away. Who would spend so much of their own money when they can have it for free with ads? /sarcasm
mrgreenfur··on “This guy is on every startup website”
Extra weird to use employees and notice only the attractive ones made it on the careers page… and if they leave and are still there etc etc
mrgreenfur··on The Fastest Path to the CEO Job, According to a 10-Year Study (2018)
Having a senior leadership position in “late 20s” sure seems like privilege and connections to me. Who cares about “sprints” when your family has all the benefits and the executive positions are the default.
mrgreenfur··on Spotify Box
If you have a computer why bother streaming it from the phone and just use the computer to stream it? This is why i have a blueos device at home
mrgreenfur··on Facebook knows Instagram is toxic for teen girls, company documents show
Agreed. SOME may behave this way, but without more info who are we to say that they "are predisposed" in general. Teenage years are very hard for tons of reasons mentioned above and the way people handle those stresses comes down to tons of factors, support systems, upbringing, context, culture, etc.

Facebook is immorally exploiting that stress.

mrgreenfur··on I Got a 'Mild' Breakthrough Case
It didn't imply, it defined the term 'mild' as hospitalization or use of oxygen. What are you mad about? The point was to give an anecdote to keep people aware of what a breakthrough is like.
mrgreenfur··on Millions Choose Simple Privacy Protection with DuckDuckGo
Do we need to keep linking to these marketing pages for DDG? I think by now this audience has heard of DDG.
mrgreenfur··on PM and EM Rules of Engagement
They are a CDP, customer data platform, that tracks user behavior so it can be distributed to various mar tech and analytics tools. Its a reasonable product and on most ad block lists for its tracking.
mrgreenfur··on Let’s Talk About Hot Tub Streams
Americans are still ashamed of sexuality and think it needs to be locked up. That said, it's clearly not 'just chatting' and probably belongs in a 'sexysexy' category.
mrgreenfur··on Breeze Keyboard
Love this site!! Thanks for linking! I considered making one like this but never had time. Always found it so hard to know whats been done in the mech keyboard area with so many home grown and low volume boards.
mrgreenfur··on Ask HN: What are the three most expensive tools/services that you use?
thank god it lasts only a few years, then it's disguised as 'real estate tax' (for public schools)
mrgreenfur··on What3Words: App used by emergency services under scrutiny
It sure does seem like two more steps complicated than lat/long with the only advantage that it's easier to say to someone else. Maybe if you're on a marine radio in a storm it's better? But with a smart phone, surely pressing the 'send gps coords' button is easier.
mrgreenfur··on Yayagram
Looks great, thank you for linking
mrgreenfur··on Buying a PC with Dell: My Journey into Hell
Is this what he bought? He didn't say the model or specs did he? It was very hard to read in these tiny sentences
mrgreenfur··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
Lots of comments here on the watch unlock, while the new privacy controls are requiring apps to ask for IDFA before it's given (and before you'retracked across apps with any identifiers). The MarTech industry is panicking to adapt and become compliant and there are estimates that it will drop ad targeting by ~75%. I see this as a huge win for privacy, if Apple actually enforces it (They have given no guidance on how this will happen).
mrgreenfur··on You Are Not ‘Behind’ (2016)
Totally agree. I also think this is mostly what religion is. "Wisdom" with some powerful rituals and family/social re-enforcement that tickles the same spot of the brain: tricks to get ahead from wiser people that know whats up.
mrgreenfur··on What I wish I knew before building a Shopify App
This is a great list, ill add in that there is no partner UI for billing obejects. If you lose a secret token then no one can access it, even though shopify has it on record and you have to beg the client to press uninstall.

Support is friendly and prompt but knows nothing about the apis.

mrgreenfur··on Justice at Spotify
Totally agree. Maybe spotify should look like an app store with fees in the 30% range at the top end (shopify/apple/steam). Their role is very similar: distribution and discovery. They probably could wi points giving better payouts per stream to smaller artists too, like steam does. Hopefully competition will force it down too (eg epic vs steam vs apple). We might need open access to back catalogues and not exclusive deals, but its a start
mrgreenfur··on Everything on Amazon Is an Ad
Those advertising categories are nearly identical to the product recommendations: both are collaborative filtering algorithms. Thinking that one framed as an as vs product suggestions seems naive to me. They fill the pages with more products to click with the best efficiency they can muster.
