mrgoldenbrown··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
That headline would be inaccurate. Persistent undo is different than cache. Cache implies a temporary copy of data whose actual existence is elsewhere. Persistent undo is advertised as persistent, not as temporary.
mrgoldenbrown··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
I think what the author was saying is "Nobody who actually uses wheelchairs asked for a crab chair."

Obviously someone commissioned these designers to dona crab chair.

mrgoldenbrown··on Show HN: The bottom 50% of U.S. households are short after essentials (BLS data)
Have you ever lived on Medicaid? It can be a full time job just trying to get coverage and then find a doctor who will take it.
mrgoldenbrown··on Codex on GPT6 Astra Low launched a rocket into space in Factorio Space Age 2.1
Lots of people in here asking how it was done. Heres what the linked page says:

>...made a mode in LUA for the game to expose an MCP server that allows the llm to play the game.

(Factorio has a very mature LUA based modding system )

mrgoldenbrown··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
My family's Pixels have all lasted physically long enough for Google to stop supporting them. My wife was annoyed when I told her she needed a new one because from her perspective there was nothing wrong with her existing one ( lack of security updates is not on her radar.)
mrgoldenbrown··on New type of dice guarantees no tie when deciding who goes first
From a site selling the dice: "With these dice all players will have an equal chance of ranking first, second, third and fourth. And only one roll is required."

Wikipedia distinguishes between "go first fair" and "permutation fair". I believe Harshbarger wanted to find permutation fair dice.

mrgoldenbrown··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
I think Gabe is an example of how you can stop at absurdly rich and still make your customers happy. The enshittification is only necessary to go beyond absurdly rich.
mrgoldenbrown··on Elon Musk: In 36 months, the cheapest place to put AI will be space [video]
Don't forget the various types of damaging radiation that will be pummeling your expensive and delicate GPUs.
mrgoldenbrown··on Elon Musk: In 36 months, the cheapest place to put AI will be space [video]
Musk was confident we'd have people on Mars by the end of 2026, so maybe he's assuming we'll put the data centers there?
mrgoldenbrown··on GCC steering committee announces AI policy
If the only way you know how to code is via LLM, it makes sense you would get defensive/ragey when someone discourages it.
mrgoldenbrown··on Jelly UI: Soft-body physics for native HTML form controls
Nor Firefox on Android.
mrgoldenbrown··on HeyVacay – Cut hotel prices 30-50% by fixing how OTAs mark up inventory
No information on site about how it works or why it's good. Just a sign up page.
mrgoldenbrown··on How we can reduce traffic congestion
Driving is currently subsidized in a variety of ways that hide it's true costs. Almost any effort to make driving's perceived cost closer to the real cost, including externalities, is a good thing.
mrgoldenbrown··on How little exercise can you get away with?
Exertion does not actually imply discomfort for everyone (maybe it does for you , I'm not in your body). I would argue most people dancing in a club are doing it because it's fun, not painful. Same with kids splashing in a pool, or anyone playing DDR or beat saber, etc. People have voluntarily exercised throughout history. Certainly it was easier when I was younger, and the endorphins overpowered any pain. I have to be more deliberate now in my old age but there are still plenty of non painful ways to move my body.
mrgoldenbrown··on I Wasn't Allowed Prompting ChatGPT During My Chalk Talk: This Is Discrimination (2025)
This is satire.
mrgoldenbrown··on Show HN: Chess-Inspired Roguelike
When you say play perfectly do you mean by exhausting all possibilities? Or is there some way to deduce ahead of time whether the RNG will put you in an impossible situation.
mrgoldenbrown··on Show HN: Chess-Inspired Roguelike
I would consider many scenarios impossible. How do you proceed when 2 bishops are on the same diagonal protecting each other? That was what I got after capturing the initial horse.
mrgoldenbrown··on Beyond All Reason (Free Total Annihilation Inspired RTS)
SC2 achieved this with balance patches - Blizzard paid close attention to the meta and when it got stale/boring, they adjusted things to keep games interesting and varied. They did their best to make this the case for low and high skilled players.
mrgoldenbrown··on I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle
Skynet becomes self aware. From T2: "The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th."
mrgoldenbrown··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
It's always BS IME.
mrgoldenbrown··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
Jetblue wouldn't let me talk to a human unless I agreed to pay $25.
mrgoldenbrown··on Codex for open source
Are you saying they aren't getting training data from you?
mrgoldenbrown··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
Did you manage/hire in a stack rank environment?
mrgoldenbrown··on The World Has Moved On
Those are the core sound bites, but recently conservative party actions don't support them.
mrgoldenbrown··on Adafruit receives demand letter from Fenwick legal counsel on behalf of Flux.ai
Or it could be completely innocent like they asked for a list of all adafruit designs, and flux.ai sent back a list of all designs including some private ones, because their filtering is broken.

Or in your pocket analogy , flux dropped their wallet on the ground and walked away, adafruit picked it up and yelled "hey bro you dropped this"

mrgoldenbrown··on Ernst & Young published cybersecurity report full of hallucinations
...>term for the inneficiency caused by chasing efficiency.

Penny wise, pound foolish? Measure twice cut once?

mrgoldenbrown··on Protestware for coding agents
You could skip all that scanning and just read the docs that explicitly tell you not to use it with AI tools.
mrgoldenbrown··on Show HN: Continue? Y/N: A 60-second game about AI agent permission fatigue
Yeah, the game seems to assert that the kill is safe to run because Claude told me it was safe. But that's the point, I'm not supposed to trust Claude.
mrgoldenbrown··on Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM
Ideally, schools shouldn't have to fix every social problem, but in practice, in modern day America, schools are stuck being the backstop. Schools shouldn't have to provide breakfast to kids, but they do because we keep cutting SNAP and other basic assistance programs. So schools need to pick up the slack, because you can't teach a kid if they're starving.
mrgoldenbrown··on Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM
In your vision how do you force the charters to accept a representative sample of students? Or do you not force them, and allow them to recruit the easy to educate kids and filter out the expensive kids?
