mrfusion··on Show HN: Featureform – An open-source Feature Store for ML
I’m not quite getting it. Would you be willing to explain it using a toy example?
mrfusion··on MIT engineers fly first-ever plane with no moving parts (2018)
I believe people have found ways to reduce drag with lasers and microwaves so you might be on to something.

It could be a new type of scram jet, right? A normal jet engine has to slow down supersonic air to subsonic to combust it which is inefficient.
mrfusion··on MIT researchers propose Brazil-sized fleet of “space bubbles” to cool the Earth
We should consider using this on Venus or mercury.
mrfusion··on Extreme temperatures in major Latin American cities could be linked to 1M deaths
I’m a huge climate person. I come from ancestors that laid down the early climate change work. But This methodology seems kind whacky. I think this kind of thing hurts our credibility in the long run.
mrfusion··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't
I remember an interview with a startup where I couldn’t figure out what their product was and they got more and more annoyed with my questions.

I ended up with something with the cloud.

mrfusion··on Energy crunch concerns lead Japan’s government to call for reduced AC use
Besides that you actually want your unit to struggle a little in order to have enough run time to control humidity.

It’s actually a problem if you have an overpowered system.

mrfusion··on Energy crunch concerns lead Japan’s government to call for reduced AC use
I found tower fans are a game changer. They are fairly quiet and move a lot of air.

I prefer them to ceiling fans plus no installation and you can keep them when you move.

mrfusion··on Ask HN: What tone to use in code review suggestions?
> "Extract this to a separate function please"

This sounds really bad. Even if you’re their boss. You’re dealing with professionals and part of that is considering their input.

I’d start with the assumption that they know what they’re doing and might have had a good reason and phrase it from there. Even if not true it sets the right tone of respect.

mrfusion··on What's New in Python 3.11?
Why not just use multi processing?
mrfusion··on AI-guided robots are ready to sort recyclables
GOOD Point by my wife! Why can’t we have a blower on a belt to accomplish most of the sorting? Plastics blow one way and glass stays on the belt. Throw in a magnet and make eddy currents to trap metals.
mrfusion··on What Copilot means for open source
How about any company that’s worried about it’s code being copied submits a copy for copilot to check against. If copilot generates any of that code it just doesn’t output it.
mrfusion··on My awakening moment about how smartphones fragment our attention span
What are some good ones that work for common people?
mrfusion··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
I’ve never used it but I imagine it would help a lot with the programmers equivalency of writers block.
mrfusion··on One-liner for running queries against CSV files with SQLite
How smart is SQLite at detecting column types from Csv data?

I once wrote a Python script to load csv files into SQLite. It had a whole hierarchy of rules to determine the data type of each column.

mrfusion··on Meta VR prototypes aim to make VR 'indistinguishable from reality'
Do you still need a Facebook account?
mrfusion··on Effects of moderate alcohol on fasting insulin and insulin sensitivity (2002)
You’d think there would be a plausible hormesis explanation for the benefits of moderate alcohol intake.

Lots of systems in the body work this way. Eg we grow our muscles by literally damaging them and having them grow back stronger.

mrfusion··on Why does science news suck so much?
FYI it’s actually all news. It’s just that you know some science and recognize it more there.
mrfusion··on Ask HN: Have you had success with improving your reading speed?
IMO it’s not a good idea. I feel like I hurt my reading comprehension and enjoyment by learning speed reading techniques.

Now the temptation is always there to speed up on a few paragraphs and it’s hard not to.

mrfusion··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
But that 10kw isn’t going directly into your house. The attic is designed to vent the air and let that hot air escape.
mrfusion··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
Thanks. But I’m trying to figure out how they do that.
mrfusion··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
Could this be useful in electric cars? I know they spend a lot on heating the cabin.
mrfusion··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
What’s the breakthrough on the tech old level? What did they discover?
mrfusion··on Probiotics can support the effect of antidepressants
How to find the best probiotics?
mrfusion··on US Army deploys its first floating solar array
If you space them out enough you wouldn’t have huge areas of no sun. It would emulate an ecosystem of water under shade trees. Shade actually attracts a lot of biodiversity.
mrfusion··on Tesla sends untrained employees to work on cars as service becomes problematic
Welcome to the culture war?
mrfusion··on Barriers to Business – How cities can pave a path to entrepreneurship
Whatever happened to “Hey, I have some apples, would you like to buy them?” “Yes, thank you!” That’s as complicated as it should be to open a business in this country.

- Ron Swanson, Parks and Recreation

mrfusion··on The first high-yield, sub-penny plastic processor
Would it be possible to 3d print with this? That could be a game changer.
mrfusion··on Glucosamine significantly reduces risk of lung cancer and lung cancer mortality
Good advice in general but it’s worth reading to see what confounders they tried to correct for. There’s still information to be gleaned.

This part caught my eye:

> A stronger association between glucosamine use and decreased lung cancer risk was observed in participants with a family history of lung cancer when compared with those without a family history.
