mrbigbob··on Private employers added just 77,000 jobs in February, far below expectations
how about instead of complaining about a comment you disagree with you actually post a counter argument. Id like to see one actually.
mrbigbob··on Self-Hosting a Firefox Sync Server
Something similar to Firefox Sync is Floccus. If you only need bookmark and tabs sync it looks straightforward in setting up

mrbigbob··on Microsoft cancels leases for AI data centers, analyst says
Maybe its time we stop seeing housing as an investment and more of a place to shelter oneself from the elements. One of the core pillars of survival
mrbigbob··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
This isnt a dig at you but something i have noticed over the last few weeks. People keep saying X/Y wont be able to do something because of rules, laws, requirements and i have to keep reminding people rules/laws are only as good as those willing to enforce them
mrbigbob··on How to Store and Dry Your 3D Filament: Full Guide
curious what brand storage box are you using ?
mrbigbob··on OpenWrt 24.10.0 – First Stable Release
For those that may not be aware if you are interested in the Flint 2 but havent purchased yet Glinet is releasing the Flint 3 soonish (they have a product page up saying coming soon). Not much is known about it other than it will be wifi 7 compatible

mrbigbob··on Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong
you do know how they "ramp up" right? All the big ones hire thousands of temp holiday workers then let them go shortly after. do you think they are going to hire thousands of full time workers for these roles. most of them since the pandemic have enjoyed record profit from already increasing shipping rates. this would be a perfect excuse for them to do it more

Nothing more American than the government attempting to kill competition so multi billion dollar corporations can get richer

mrbigbob··on The console wars are over and nobody won
Ive been a pc gamer for a little of 2 decades and this is one of the best times to be a PC gamer. Production costs of video games have ballooned so much that both Microsoft and now even Sonys exclusive are coming to the PC because they simply cannot sustain games that are exclusive to just 1 console. Granted Microsoft has not been hostile to PC gaming for a while now but i never thought id see the day Sony would port some of their exclusives onto the PC
mrbigbob··on A three month review of kagi search and the orion web browser (2024)
No, $10 a month is not expensive. However, the problem is the amount of products and services that in the past you could buy once or buy and if you wish to upgrade to the next version you had to pay again have become less and less and subscription services have skyrocketed.
mrbigbob··on Meta scrapped factcheckers because systems were 'too complex'
From the article linked: "The 40-year-old billionaire said that, starting in the US, Meta would “get rid of factcheckers and replace them with community notes similar to X” "

You are right this does not apply to Europe where you guys have strict laws that you actually enforce. But here in the US heaven forbid that the "Free" market has any sort of regulation that might make multi billion/trillion dollar companies have to work a little harder to not destroy the lives, health, or environment of our countrymen.

This is just the beginning and i sadly dont see it getting any better for several years. Large companies will have more free reign to do what they please in the US even more so than the current status quo

mrbigbob··on Hoarder: Self-hostable bookmark-everything app
If people are interested it was featured hear on HN a day or two ago but Obsidian released an extension called Obsidian Clipper that can save webpages in markdown format. https://github.com/obsidianmd/obsidian-clipper
mrbigbob··on Buying a TV in 2025? Expect lower prices, more ads, and an OS war
the closest thing to a dumb TV are "commercial displays" that are designed for business signage, etc. sadly some of those now are even coming with OS's in them so if you are interested in going that route be careful what you purchase
mrbigbob··on We all took the DVD boom era for granted
i dont think its that people dont care about quality but they simply have never experienced a better alternative.

an example would be i game on my computer and for years i had a 60Hz monitor and it wasnt til 2020 i upgraded to 144Hz monitor. it is night and day difference in feel that i can never go back to a monitor under 120Hz

mrbigbob··on Review of Mullvad VPN
Mullvad did away with port forwarding about 1.5 years ago. https://mullvad.net/en/blog/removing-the-support-for-forward.... If im not mistaken its not your ability to download the torrents that is effected but your ability to really upload the torrents. If you belong to a private tracker with a strict seeding to downloading ratio i would use another VPN service for that
mrbigbob··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
It mentions using this as a computer interface but wouldnt prolonged use eventually open up the blood brain barrier?
mrbigbob··on RebrickNet – Lego Part Detector
Another neat app if you have an iphone is Brickit which scans a large pile of your lego pieces and gives you build ideas.

mrbigbob··on Apple may stop producing Vision Pro by the end of 2024
the vision pro should have been released as devkits only. allowed at least 12 months of app developement and then released a pro and base headset for around $1,000. also im sorry but the whole external screen so you can see someones eyes was a waste and added unnecessary weight and price to an already bloated price point

i believe apple can make a compelling mixed reality headset but they need compelling apps and very few are going to develop if the platform is over $2000 in my opinion

mrbigbob··on King vs. Kubrick: The Origins of Evil (2020)
the movie does show the house is haunted. when danny gets attacked by the woman in the room and at the very end of the movie when shelly duvall is running around the house and shes all of those people and the skeletons in the lounge area. although i do admit it took me a while before reading the book to realize that they all werent having mental breakdowns. the movie definitely could have been a little clearer there
mrbigbob··on Show HN: PurePlates – A Recipe Scraping iOS App
An app to possibly look at is Tandoor Recipes. https://github.com/TandoorRecipes/recipes
mrbigbob··on BorgBackup 2.0 supports Rclone – over 70 cloud providers in addition to SSH
I remember reading quite a few years ago about people working to get Borg to work with windows. Has there been any recent progress with that?
mrbigbob··on BorgBackup 2.0 supports Rclone – over 70 cloud providers in addition to SSH
Another fairly good gui for Borg is Pika Backup. https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/pika-backup
mrbigbob··on 18 Months with a Framework 13
In july Framework mentioned they were replacing the webcam going forward and the new webcam should be shipping by now (they originally said august) https://frame.work/blog/framework-laptop-13-deep-dive---a-la...
mrbigbob··on Meta cancels high-end mixed reality headset after Apple Vision Pro struggles
it still baffles me how Apple decided to release the Vision pro as an actual consumer product and not use this generation as just dev. kits and release a successor to the vision pro and have a cheaper one based on on the mobile chips too in 1 to 1.5 years
mrbigbob··on Make Firefox Private Again
ive found in the not too distant past that sometimes playing DRM content on librewolf to staight not work. For instance playing spotify will straight not work but will work fine in firefox
mrbigbob··on Windows Control Panel set for deprecation
when it comes to some of the network interface/ sound settings i dont even bother with looking in the new settings section
mrbigbob··on Windows Control Panel set for deprecation
can someone explain to me why Microsoft is so incredibly slow in implementing what i see as relatively simple changes? it reminds me of everyone begging microsoft for tabs in file explorer and they finally did it... after close to 15 years!

they have said they are going to depreciate the control panel for at least 7 years and it still isnt done. I dont understand how a company this size moves to slow in implementing what seems to be fairly straight forward things

mrbigbob··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
I remember reading an article from MIT earlier this year where they deposited metallic particles into adhesive of an id tag and registered the unique dispertion of the metallic particles as a way to verify a genuine or fake product https://news.mit.edu/2024/tiny-tamper-proof-id-tag-can-authe...
mrbigbob··on Some Florida cities are living off red light cameras
i honestly dont mind red light cameras per say (do think people should have the right to challege them bc technology isnt perfect all the time) but i absolutely loathe speeding cameras

not that i speed much but i have witnessed too many accidents where a person is going the speed limit (maybe 5MPH over) and they quickly slam on the brakes and go 15 MPH under while the car behind them rear ends them

mrbigbob··on Creating My Own Linux-Based Smart TV
im in the same boat as you. i have a roku currently talking to my jellyfin server running on my pi and a few months ago roku decided there needed to be more adds and it really has killed what little speed the roku had to begin with

definitely eyeing an apple 4k tv and getting a lifetime subscription to the infuse player

mrbigbob··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
i dont think apple is too concerned with the end user using a 3rd party store but the large companies having the ability to host their app on a 3rd party store sidestepping apples fee entirely. thats what truely scares them.
