mrarjen··on In-N-Out managers earn triple the industry average
I do think one of these managers could live in certain area's in SF without much worries.

But I agree if you will live in a 30 million mansion with a view over the city, you won't have enough as a manager.

mrarjen··on In-N-Out managers earn triple the industry average
A proper salary is one where the workers can live their lives without worries about money or having to work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

And 3 times the average for this kind of work in a place where 2 times the amount is the normal average is kind of crazy. And this should indeed not be an article to begin with but it is.

mrarjen··on In-N-Out managers earn triple the industry average
Welcome to the world where we talk about the company giving their employees a proper salary and benefits, because every other company of it's kind is unlikely to do so. Let's hope more companies follow eventually.

I heard good things of In-N-Out and ill likely visit one one day when I'm ever back in the states.

mrarjen··on Private landowners blocking access to public lands in the American West
I remember reading an article regarding this some time ago as well. It's mostly due to some new rule that when the public has been able to access private land for an amount of time unhindered the state can claim it their own. This has caused most to fence up in order to keep their land.

It's completely understandable, and this is mostly just Government trolling to land owners and causing inconvenient situations to the public wanting to access public grounds.

mrarjen··on Horrible doors on British trains (2010)
This is indeed quite bad... but it also reminds me of trains in NL, some have mid section doors that have the same layout as on the photo, with a lit up button that you need to press to open the door. Usually I'd see people try to pull the small handle for minutes on end just to give up and instead stand in the pathway.

Or other doors that have a automatic closing function and you need to pull a handle for it to open again. When entering the train, not everyone pulls the handle so it sometimes automatically closes when someone is in between the door. If nobody knows that they need to pull the handle this can take a while before the horde of people entering/exiting resumes moving again. (Especially hard on old ladies that get stuck :( )

mrarjen··on The Eastern Corner of Siberia Is the Coldest Inhabited Place on Earth
Apparently there aren't many jobs... but there is some tourism and I guess if you are born there you might stick around?

mrarjen··on 82% of Wealth Created in 2017 Went to the top 1%, says Oxfam
Correct, and in many countries with less income the cost of living is also scaled to this. So to get a perfect average the cost of living and income balances need to kind of be adjusted to reflect this...?

But then again the top few people who have a lot will earn so much more that they can barely even get rid of their fortunes. And that $32,000 isn't even enough in certain area's to have a house to live in and food security...

mrarjen··on List of oldest companies: Before 1300
Weihenstephan is still one of my fav breweries. Would be nice to see articles regarding how some of these companies managed to keep going for this long.
mrarjen··on How Bitcoin Compares to History's Big Bubbles
I just hope Bitcoin gets phased out to make way for a more stable front runner of cryptocurrency.
mrarjen··on Goldman Sachs Report Explores Use of Bitcoin as Currency
Don't think they will ever even consider using this as a currency themselves, it's but a routine paper on how people have attempted to use it as a currency in my opinion. The title is simply to drive more readers to the site.

Any Cryptocurrency used by banks or finance companies will be behind locked doors without public trading and no media will be involved if they are smart.

mrarjen··on Simone Giertz makes a living creating shitty robots (2016) [video]
Pretty much the same amount of text as the gz article then. I find her video's rather inspiring showing what is possible with robots and also how they are incomprehensibly useless in most ways for tasks that are not laid out perfectly for them.
mrarjen··on World without antibiotics
I was thinking this as well. It seems rather promising as a partial replacement at first. Hope that this will offer solutions to the antibiotics problem long term.
mrarjen··on A Vast, 430-Year-Old World Map
Love how it got Frisa correctly down as a bunch of man made hills sticking out of the water.
mrarjen··on Observable Universe contains 10x more galaxies than previously thought (2016)
Just imagine all the stuff that's not giving off light or anything observable by us at this time. Rogue planets and what not should be everywhere no?
mrarjen··on Why the U.S. Spends So Much More Than Other Nations on Health Care
Depends if the "tribute" or taxes payed are actually returning to the people in the form of services like roads or schools, fire department all those things. If not, and a rich guy gets most of it just to get more rich then yea, I'd see why people would see this as a scam and criminal behavior.
mrarjen··on Why the U.S. Spends So Much More Than Other Nations on Health Care
It will show in details regarding the price/payment here (Netherlands) Beats getting unexpected extra costs suddenly added for me personally... and in Amerika when eating out you even have to pay part of the salary for the staff afterwards...
mrarjen··on Why the U.S. Spends So Much More Than Other Nations on Health Care
Taxes would be a whole of a lot better if they didn't let you pick all the products and then during payment add the % of tax on top of it! Just include it in the price!
mrarjen··on The Failed War on Drugs
In my opinion it's best to legalize drugs to the point where people are educated about it's use. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvRQKXtIGcK1yEnQ4Te8hWQ

And when they feel they need help getting off the drugs they can go to any clinic or government point to help them get clean and back on their feet. This has proven quite successful in any country that has done this so far.

mrarjen··on Why can’t San Francisco’s tech culture solve the city’s social problems?
Some fancy EU type regulations would help quite a bit I think. Too bad, helping people is not in the interest of earning money.
mrarjen··on A type of semi-transparent polymer that can be mended at room temperature
Yes think of something more in the lines of Plexiglas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poly(methyl_methacrylate)

The video is down here, looks almost like a gooey liquid how it melts back together... http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201712150041.html

mrarjen··on China’s Plan to Keep Sand from Swallowing the World
Would like to see them try and do this, get the ground a bit more fertile and planting native grasses perhaps to get it going somewhat? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpTHi7O66pI
mrarjen··on Inside the Home of Instant Pot
Been using a rice cooker for some years now, it's already a huge step up from cooking it in a pot. And it seems almost nobody uses rice cookers here (NL). Fun fact, people from Asian countries are rather unlikely to know how to cook rice in a pan.

I'll very likely get one of the IP's, as cooking ribs and other slow cooked meats do take a lot of time now, and pressure cookers are like playing with a bomb.

mrarjen··on People Don't Get the Link Between Meat Consumption and Climate Change (2016)
I mean the bio meat market for example. Here (netherlands) any bio product is more expensive on average, and the cheaper non bio products are cheaper, so guess what meats are consumed more?
mrarjen··on People Don't Get the Link Between Meat Consumption and Climate Change (2016)
If it's more expensive the less eco friendly ways of making meat will be consumed instead.
mrarjen··on People Don't Get the Link Between Meat Consumption and Climate Change (2016)
Yea because taxing carbon will magically get rid of it! \o/
mrarjen··on People Don't Get the Link Between Meat Consumption and Climate Change (2016)
Correct, I think it would be more effective having this change on a production level where farmers and scientists possibly work together to make meat production more sustainable by for example beter utilizing and extending grass lands in barren regions. Trick is to not make the meat more expensive...
mrarjen··on Crypto is not cryptocurrency
Seems accurate to me, but people will be too lazy to type all of that every time.
mrarjen··on The Science of Addictive Junk Food (2013)
Just have a look at the daily consumption recommendation of energy drinks, you can't even drink the whole can without going far over the daily limit. And I guess for n/a, you could go for "1/20 pizza" or less?
mrarjen··on SpaceX raises another $100M
Exactly, been thinking this for years now. It's scary how fast a company can grow too big to actually do anything remotely new or change a small thing to save itself. Same actually how SpaceX came to be, stop tossing away perfectly fine rockets.
mrarjen··on A deal that let hundreds of IS fighters and their families escape from Raqqa
Only sources on this I can find is that in a way the US created ISIS by bombing a whole lot of civilians in the region and thus fueling an uprising. Nothing concrete regarding the SAS or Special Forces training them.
