mrarjen··on The Internet runs on free and open source software and so does the DNS
Bayer these days and yes, avoid like the plague for nothing good will come of it.
mrarjen··on Terpstra Keyboard
Can confirm, usually misunderstood too.
mrarjen··on Amazon to display tariff costs for consumers
Flipping from discount everything store to monopolistic price gauging power house.
mrarjen··on Berkshire Hathaway’s stock price is too high for Nasdaq computers
With all the weird structures of stock lending and synthetics going around, I believe it's been extremely valuable for Buffet to keep it as it is for all these years.
mrarjen··on Rolls-Royce plans mini nuclear reactors by 2029
Personally I'm all for having mini reactors if it means we can generate reliable energy with minimal pollution. Anything that helps reduce emissions should be considered.

But this would need to be a fail save type of reactor and with a clear plan(s) all the way down to how the waste is handled till it's no longer active.

mrarjen··on “This is why I use ad blockers and a pi-hole server”
Ads have gotten to the point I'm once again getting the feeling I'm on IE with 80% of the page blocked by toolbars. But this time it's ads and video's blocking any content I want to consume.

Blockers are a valuable thing to simply be able to read or watch anything on most sites now a days. I also happily pay for proper media, but not when you complicate this by blocking parts of this action with ads to begin with.

mrarjen··on Amsterdam’s canal houses have endured for 300 years
This is mainly the case in the cities, other area's offer more space that is similar to other countries.

Also Amsterdam is the peak of tiny spaces here. Single bedroom 25 m2, with shared toilet/kitchen for sale can cost you €100.000,- easily.

mrarjen··on New study: The advertising industry is systematically breaking EU law
It's not proven yet I guess? But then again, the big companies keep saying they don't record/listen to voice commands for assistants either.

But the reports of third party companies suddenly having access to this data (for quality improvement purposes) tells another story.

Also my YouTube keeps suggesting videos for any show my phone is near when it plays.

mrarjen··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
Also lack of initiative by many 1st world countries, hopefully there will be plenty of new technologies developed in the coming years that reduce or capture carbon.

But with current developments this will be far too little too late and it will be a rough ride forward.

mrarjen··on Calm Technology
Wish my Sony headphones had this for when switching modes or battery low indications. Currently it will mute all sound and speak in a voice regarding what is going on with limited info, instead of some clear beeps. Get to the point tech!
mrarjen··on British woman revived after six-hour cardiac arrest
This is actually what happens, seen some articles pass by where people simply could not live with the burden.
mrarjen··on America’s largest milk producer files for bankruptcy
Other non white milk type products, like milk based drinks with fruit flavors, protein drinks or breakfast replacement options.
mrarjen··on America’s largest milk producer files for bankruptcy
> "accelerated decline in the conventional white milk category."

Overall it's not looking like people are drinking less milk, they simply want more variety and this company seems to be having a hard time in all area's from Walmart to slowly upcoming alternative milk replacers.

Seems also in part they haven't innovated enough in new types of product to draw more customers.

mrarjen··on Heavy-lift ship lifts entire cruise liner out of the water [video]
Would be fun to calculate what is required for the dock to actually flip, the scale of it is huge, so you would see it coming a mile away no?
mrarjen··on Heavy-lift ship lifts entire cruise liner out of the water [video]
Thanks for that! Now I'll have sweaty palms going past the equator in airplanes.
mrarjen··on Heavy-lift ship lifts entire cruise liner out of the water [video]
Likely in some way also to do with the amount of moving parts and it's complexity, not saying the dry dock is simple, but compared to many "invisible" and prone to break parts due to dependence on one another, code can be quite harsh.

When one section of the dock doesn't work it won't suddenly flip upside down as could be the case for code.

mrarjen··on Every American Car Brand Is on the Bottom Half of CR's Reliability Rankings
I'd ague that Japan's quality is a bit better than EU but also depends on what food you are used to. Mainly healthy options wise I think Japan stands out even more.
mrarjen··on 404 Page Not Found
I'm already happy not half the page is ads on this one, but yes you get ripped right out of reading and it instantly comes off as a cheap site.
mrarjen··on Popular Local News Sites in the US and Canada Are Fake
It's still Buzzfeed, but on wikipedia they do state some of these numbers.

Not even sure advertisers mind at this point?

mrarjen··on Lego to open 160 new stores as other toy retailers suffer
Not saying it's nice, but these are things a company like Lego needs to do, or risk losing trademarks on the iconic block type... I looked at the examples and they do show similarities to their IP so they need to sue or risk losing their own rights.

For the SW Lego sets, Disney will be sure to take a big cut of that increased prices on the product. Can't really blame Lego for that either. I can't say for sure regarding quality, this might be a thing?

mrarjen··on Phones that secretly listen to us are a myth
Then how do they explain the third party company with audio recordings from Facebook?

Plus sending full audio recordings to a server would be somewhat odd, isn't collecting key words converted in text and sending that a lot more plausible?

mrarjen··on Flawed Algorithms Are Grading Millions of Students’ Essays
Reminds me of the plagiarism checker they had at my partners university, they would check identical words on specific subjects... Meaning every word in any order, so naturally there is a high % of overlap not only with quotes but also the words used regarding the subject, the teacher would take this literally as "you did not write this yourself" if 10% of words would be similar.

Don't think anyone passed that class.

mrarjen··on ‘Deepfakes’ Trigger a Race to Fight Manipulated Photos and Videos
Something even reaching mainstream media is already too far down the line, making the tools to nip this in the bud before it reaches mainstream would be quite valuable in my opinion.
mrarjen··on ‘Deepfakes’ Trigger a Race to Fight Manipulated Photos and Videos
Most people cant't even see that the Onion is satire... Half baked fakes are already far more difficult to spot.
mrarjen··on My Roommate's Tik Tok Fame Made My Life Hell (2018)
That part about him marking everything with sharpy ink and glitter would have been nice for when I had my roommate from hell. I once dried myself off with a towel to half way discover some other traces of matter I didn't want to see... I tossed the towel.
mrarjen··on How does one appear in the Google News carousel?
>"We require fresh content in all sections of the edition

This explains perfectly why I'm seeing horribly outdated news as if it was submitted hours ago on my pixel google news feed feature... They most likely just slap a different time stamp on articles to make them seem "fresh"

Proper news is a scarce resource.

mrarjen··on Elon Musk Unveils Boring Co's First Tunnel
First thing I noticed, why is there a loose hanging cable on the side of the tunnel, plus how will a slightly taller car fit? Seems there is plenty of work still to be done.
mrarjen··on Valve discontinues the Steam Link
They will continue to support it apparently, so no need to switch yet, unless you want to expand it beyond just Steam.

But a Pi will likely not run it as well tbh, always notice some lag, where with the Steam link it's buttery smooth.

mrarjen··on Companies struggling to fill jobs 'should try paying more,' Fed's Kashkari says
These things always remind me of two things.

Only wanting young employees with many years of experience, and that time the Dutch government tried to get unemployed people to work in the green houses. They got hundreds of people on buses, drove them to the green houses "look how wonderful it is to work here", a few million investment later, two people started working there. Both because this was a good way to meet others, and they didn't mind getting a lot less money if they took the job over government payment.

mrarjen··on Blue Apron lays off more workers
Exactly, the only advantage that these meal services can possibly offer is perhaps a streamlined way to get ingredients that are less likely sold by supermarkets.

Then again that would be a rather niche market.
