mr_overalls··on The Khmer Rouge: Genocide in the Name of Utopia (2016)
I attended a university-based martial arts class in the late 1990s. A somewhat-elderly Asian lady (probably mid-50's) began attending classes and progressing through the ranks. She was kind of. . . well, a goofball. Transgressive sort of humor. Made jokes about people's girlfriends. Laughed through demos.

The only time I saw her utterly serious is when the instructor showed off some knife-defense techniques he learned at a seminar. She got a weird look on her face at the overly-styled techniques we were being show and very clearly said, "We did it like this in Cambodia." She grabbed the rubber knife from the sensei, seemingly teleported behind his back, clamped a hand over his mouth, and drew the knife across his throat. "So they no hear any noise," she explained. As a bunch of 20-something kids, we looked on in horror. She seemed to remember herself and looked embarrassed. Left early from class and never came back.

mr_overalls··on No More Coffee
According to Mayo Clinic, typical caffeine levels are:

Brewed coffee (8 oz): 96 mg Brewed black tea (8 oz): 47 mg Brewed green tea (8 oz): 28 mg

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-h...

It's worth noting that tea also contains theanine, in addition to caffeine. Theanine binds to glutamate receptors and increases serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and glycine levels in various areas of the brain.

It's worth noting that much of his work at the patent office related to questions about transmission of electric signals and electrical–mechanical synchronization of time, two technical problems that show up conspicuously in the thought experiments that eventually led Einstein to his radical conclusions about the nature of light and the fundamental connection between space and time.

mr_overalls··on Ask HN: Programs that wasted you 100 hours?
Exactly. I love the spirit and motivation behind Office Libre, but Excel and Word just _work_ for most basic tasks and an amazing number of corner cases. Open-source products just don't even come close.

The only tools people don't complain about are the ones that no one uses.

I've heard this in a variety of meditation & martial arts communities. I think it's is more of a straw man that various groups use to build up the importance of their own methods.
mr_overalls··on Nancy Pelosi Says House Will Pass Coronavirus Bill with Free Testing for All
> intent of the framers

The Framers were not omniscient, and the Constitution isn't a religious text. They allowed slavery, forbid women to vote, and held an 18th-century understanding of economics and science. While their design philosophy for our government is good to consider, we are not beholden to them to implement as they would have wished.

The most successful nations today - in terms of population health, happiness, and well-being - are Western European countries with strong social safety nets.

mr_overalls··on Did Trump Administration Fire the US Pandemic Response Team?
> it refers to the immoral fabrications and contextual transformations needed to maintain mass discontent with one individual person.

It's a bit amazing to me that we live in the same reality.

I can listen to Trump speak for perhaps 30 seconds because it's transparently in some new way that he is malignantly narcissistic, corrupt, and proudly uninformed about every subject he opines about. No "fake news" needed.

mr_overalls··on Age, Sex, Existing Conditions of Covid-19 Cases and Deaths
Exposure to a virus doesn't ensure infection - there is some probability involved, depending at least partially on the number of virus particles that you are exposed to, over what period of time.

Viral load is literally a numerical expression of the quantity of virus in a given volume. It is often expressed as viral particles, or infectious particles per mL depending on the type of assay. And a higher viral load often correlates with the severity of an active viral infection.

mr_overalls··on Corporate buzzwords are how workers pretend to be adults
This kind of language usage isn't limited to fitting in socially in the business world.

People use overly-elaborate language to appear intelligent or innovative, too. I once spent some time learning a martial art whose founder had replaced all of the standard names for movement and techniques with novel, quasi-technical-sounding ones.

"Multiple attackers" became "plural assailants", "breathing technique" became "respiratory enhancement". "Sparring" became "fisticuffs". Etc.

It was maddening, because he would correct students who slipped up and failed to use his terminology.

mr_overalls··on Artificial intelligence yields a powerful new antibiotic
I was on gear for more than a decade until a strange incident one morning made me quit.

I had started meditating after my workout for about 20 minutes - standard "following the breath" stuff from Zen/vipassana. I'd been doing this for about 5 months. And after a session one morning, I was brushing my teeth in the mirror. I still had a pump from earlier, and was looking at the front deltoid in my right shoulder jump around as I brushed.

And out of the blue, I was absolutely floored by the pointlessness of my workout regimen. I wasn't lifting for health - in fact, I was actually hurting myself in pursuit of a cluster of goals that revolved around a denial of reality.

Mainly, I was 1) raging against the natural aging of my body, i.e. if I'm strong enough, then clearly I'm not getting older. And 2), I was pursuing a shallow admiration from other people, i.e. if women are attracted to my muscular shell and guys are a little intimidated, then deep down, I'm not really this insecure guy who struggles with social anxiety, right? And 3), the physical body is just so ephemeral. We're only granted a few decades of life, and did I really want to spend all of my waking hours in a self-oriented optimization of the appearance of a muscle-suit?

These illusions just fell away for a few moments, and I couldn't pretend after that. After a few more weeks of my old routine, I tapered off the gear, cut my volume by like 2/3, and. . . lo and behold, had time for other hobbies. I started meeting people outside of the gym, started seeing a counselor for social anxiety, and generally started feeling like, I dunno, a more healthy human being again. I might wear a muscle-suit, but I am not completely identified/defined by it.

I don't wake up in the middle of the night with aching hips & shoulders anymore, only to guzzle a shake so my gainz won't catabolize because I've gone 4 hours without protein.

I still work out, but it's a more reasonable, balanced mix of strength training, cardio, mobility, etc. so that I can be a good dad for my two young kids. I might have gotten a late start on raising a family, but I'm putting my efforts into staying as healthy as possible for them, as well as for myself.

I can only hope that you look within yourself to see the real reasons for your obsession. Maybe your situation is different, but my life has utterly changed for the better since I addressed the baggage that was originally motivating me.

mr_overalls··on Early humans in Africa may have interbred with an extinct species: new research
In an intro-level anthropology class I took 20 years ago, we learned about the competing models of human evolution: Multiregional vs Out of Africa.

Perhaps they dumbed down the complexity for a bunch of freshmen, but I remember wondering then why some combination of the two wasn't possible.

It certainly looks like a mix of the two canonical models matches the data that is being revealed through genetics.

Generally, besides having a productive and globally-connected economy, a global leader will need to:

1) Function as a global policeman. Aside from serving domestic interests with this force projection, they will be expected to protect shipping lanes, offer humanitarian relief in emergency situations, etc. 2) Offer a stable currency of last resort 3) Export cultural values that are appealing to other countries

China has show little interest in any of these.

mr_overalls··on Tencent may have accidentally leaked real data on Wuhan virus deaths
There's speculation that the CCP is lying about the actual numbers of dead/infected due to 2019-nCoV, but this article is pure speculation based on a single screenshot.

mr_overalls··on What Makes the Hardest Equations in Physics So Difficult? (2018)
I did an undergrad in physics decades ago, and it pleases me to no end to see that someone else has made this observation. Especially when dealing with quantum weirdness, the advice of professors to focus "follow the math" always seem to gloss over the extensive interpretation (Copenhagen and otherwise) that gave context and meaning to the math & experimental results.

Despite being confined to the embassy while seeking safe passage to Ecuador, Assange met with Russians and world-class hackers at critical moments, frequently for hours at a time. He also acquired powerful new computing and network hardware to facilitate data transfers just weeks before WikiLeaks received hacked materials from Russian operatives.
