mpsprd··on micro – A Modern Alternative to nano
Ok I see. Its $EDITOR for people that dislike modal editors.
mpsprd··on A 100GW phased laser array for interstellar lightsail propulsion (2021)
>accelerating it via radiation pressure to 0.2𝑐 within a few minutes [7].

That probe must be made in unobtainium to handle that acceleration. For 0.2c in 5 minutes it's 20394G!

mpsprd··on micro – A Modern Alternative to nano
I wonder, who is this for?

I feel this kind of editor is for the sophisticated minimalist, used alongside a 60% fancy keyboard with ceramic key caps.

I see comments about this being good for "beginners", and I wonder what definition they are using. Make them use a basic graphical editor like gedit.

mpsprd··on Nintendo is trying to patent some broad Tears of the Kingdom mechanics
Wait, aren't patents on gameplay inapplicable? I thought this is why game clones are commonplace, so much that the term "x clone" entered the vernacular for video games.
mpsprd··on Show HN: Anonymize HN – a Chrome extension to anonymize Hacker News users
Tangentially, I always found the discussion flow on image boards interesting because of the "anonymous chorus" of replies.

It creates special patterns: cryptic references to spot non-initiates, people role-playing a straw man and replying to themselves, shunning people using confirmed user names, etc. There is jargon for all of this but it is too offensive for this venue.

mpsprd··on Ask HN: How do you handle tech use with your kids?
"treat" in the sense of it being a high sugar, high dopamine thing I want to avoid my children getting too used to. Not in the sense of giving something for good deeds.

Thinking about it, the concept of treat is more fitting for the parents than the kid.

mpsprd··on Ask HN: How do you handle tech use with your kids?
Heh, I am reading this with a nasty neck pain.

I spent a lot of time managing ergonomics on my work station (ergodox custom keyboard, single screen, raising desk, etc), but here I am looking down on my phone.

mpsprd··on Ask HN: How do you handle tech use with your kids?
That's really helpful, thank you. Focusing on the actual behavioural problems instead of "having x hours a week" does make sense.

Maybe I focus on this more because younger me was denied video games for many years, until I bought my own consoles/pc and got to "eat the whole cake".

I really don't want to reproduce that pattern.

mpsprd··on My Overkill Home Network
The single thing I am most envious in this setup is the little box giving symmetrical 1Gbps from the ISP. I wish fiber could grow in remote areas...
mpsprd··on Timelapse of Cigarettes Left in Soil for an Entire Year
This is why when I occasionally smoke, I prefer smoking small cigars. Its dried wrapped leaves. It will decompose fast and (to my knowledge) is not doped with combustion regulators; they will extinguish pretty fast if left alone, whereas a cigarette will cleanly burn all the way.

Another perk is how expensive they are compared to cigarettes, it's a natural counter to nicotine addiction.

mpsprd··on Homo sapiens declared extinct (1999)
I love these kind of short sci-fi stories.

In the same vein, it makes me remember the "love deaths robots" episode (V1E2) where robot tourists take a sightseeing tour in the human apocalypse.

mpsprd··on I went to 50 different dentists: almost all gave a different diagnosis (1997)
Doctors are technicians. Technicians with a large toolkit, but technicians nonetheless.

When you compare their behaviors to IT it all starts making sense.

mpsprd··on LK-99 is an online sensation but replication efforts fall short
Something exciting is happening, of course people want be informed as it evolves.

A similar example are election nights. People already voted, the result is in the box, we could simply wait and announce the result.

But seeing the numbers rise like an ongoing fight is going on makes for a more entertaining evening!

mpsprd··on LK-99 is an online sensation but replication efforts fall short
Any pessimistic/cautious take on a subject bringing excitement and hope for the future is going to be criticized because people want it to be true. This is just confirmation bias at play.

Considering the hype, I actually find HN comments relatively cautious and patient, this is a pseudonymous internet forum after all.

mpsprd··on Miyazaki’s Magical Food: An ode to anime’s best cooking scenes
Spirited away: One of the best and has all all the flavours of Ghibli, I recommend starting with it.

Shorter: Totoro, great for kids with a short attention span, my toddler enjoyed it.

mpsprd··on Estimated U.S. deer population, 1450 to 2016
In Canada, the leading cause of death for deer is actually hunger/hardness of the winter.

mpsprd··on Comic Mono
I used to hate Comic Sans until a primary school teacher explained to me it was used because the "a" is exactly the way they teach how to write it.
mpsprd··on Show HN: Non.io, a Reddit-like platform Ive been working on for the last 4 years
It works well for content focused platforms. Booru type websites come to mind, they are famous for their excellent community tagging.

Danbooru even has community sourced translations overlaid to pictures.

mpsprd··on Royal Mail issues Warhammer stamps celebrating 40 year anniversary
It depends on your preferences.

For a l4d style horde shooter, vermintide 1&2

For a boomer shooter, the recent 40k boltgun is allegedly excellent

For tactical in the 40k realm the dawn of war 2 is great.

Space marine was a nice linear action game, worthwile on sale.

mpsprd··on Absinthe for Large Elixir Applications
As a by-product of my mixology hobby, I thought for a second this post was about Absinthe, the drink.

I was really curious about what Large elixirs meant in this context.

mpsprd··on Vasectomies rose after the end of Roe
It's interesting how vasectomy is normalized or shunned depending on culture.

In France, its taboo and doctors take this very seriously, they will try to protect the patient "against themselves"[0].

In Quebec, its extremely normalized and common. Most family men do it in their late thirties/early forties.

mpsprd··on Rarbg Is No More
I believe rarbg had many "official" torrents that they seeded. This must be part of their costs.
mpsprd··on The Sourdough Framework
This book got me into making my own bread, thank you hendricius!

Toughts I didn't take the time to put in an mr:

-The text is dense like a fruitcake. A bit of air would go a long way to make it more digestible. Sometimes long explanations on progressions are mixed in with key information, and it makes it hard to follow.

-I forget if I compiled it or used the pdf but by memory it was the default latex font, which makes the text look like a paper.

-Starter care and setup was the hardest for me to parse. Having bullets for key concepts would really help. The diagram helps but still has some ambiguity.

Even my grandma, impressed by my beautiful bread, adopted your technique :)

mpsprd··on Ancient Earth Globe
This is really interesting, but I have trouble enjoying it because the earth keeps spinning while I try to look at a specific part.
mpsprd··on Ancient Earth Globe
In hindsight, this is most probably a joke, but I still looked it up.

Earliest humans, Homo Habilis, appeared 2.4-1.4 Mi years ago.

mpsprd··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
You should point to the firebombing of Tokyo [0]

Arguably more destructive than Hiroshima.

mpsprd··on Bilingualism affords no general cognitive advantages: Study
My kid is barely 2yrs, so my plans for English immersion are still vague, but here goes:

- consuming all media in the original language instead of dubs

- kindergarten already does some bilingual exploration, she's a native English speaker

- Later on I intend to do an "English day" each week at home where we would only converse in English. From my personal experience, the best path to fluency is having no choice but to speak in a given language. I also want to create boundaries to prevent mixing the two languages.

About french children's book, I could send you a mail about it. Depending on the age of your kids "la courte échelle" has great stuff.

mpsprd··on Bilingualism affords no general cognitive advantages: Study
I'm curious about how french immersion works in English speaking Canada. It's something seen as "higher class"?

I live the mirror situation: french speaking young parent intending to make my child bilingual at a young age.

Here english is obviously seen as an edge and is studied a lot.

mpsprd··on Manipulative Consent Requests
GDPR kept tracking going on while putting the internet back in the age of pop up windows.
mpsprd··on US warship collides with tugboat in disastrous launch
>a Pentagon release ahead of the christening noted that Saturday’s “side-launch” would be the last at the Wisconsin shipyard, with follow-on ships being launched using a shiplift system.

Too bad. I always found side ship launches awe inspiring. Hurling gigantic and incredibly expensive masses of steel in the water to make a big show.
