mpsprd··on Rue de l'Avenir
I think you're right, I misremembered the source. Reading online it's called the "robot series" and Asimov says he borrowed it from Heinlein.
mpsprd··on Rue de l'Avenir
Asimov introduced me to this concept in I robot.

In his version there were multiple levels of speed for entry/exit of transit so the main highways were going really fast.

IIRC it required some dexterity to use and sounded a bit dangerous...

mpsprd··on Meta to charge for ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe
To me your selection is reversed.

If you hate ads so much you're prepared to pay fb to get rid of it, I don't believe you're one to click on them.

mpsprd··on The Enhanced Game – Sports, without drug testing
I agree with you, the higher the level, the more athletes will destroy their bodies in the process.

My critism is about actively encouraging said destruction via promotion of stimulants. It's already bad as it is.

mpsprd··on The Enhanced Game – Sports, without drug testing
This website ignores the big problem with enhancement medication: the health of participants.

A future where there is an incentive to juice up athletes as much as possible is a recipe for disaster.

mpsprd··on Using Goatse to Stop App Theft
This made me nostalgic of the old ytmnd days
mpsprd··on K3s – Lightweight Kubernetes
Can this tool help to simplify self hosting implems? K3s was recommended to me to replace my personal pile of systemd units starting docker compose configs and manual reverse proxy configs.

Im am completely oblivious to how k8s works.

mpsprd··on How China's “debt traps” work
This article makes me think about "tofu-dreg projects" [0]

Poor quality construction work prevalent in mainland china. If you look for content with this keyword, you will find jaw dropping videos of constructions workers bending or breaking "rebar" with their hands, Owners chipping away concrete in high-rise buildings like its sand, etc.

Of course some of this can be propaganda, but considering it has a local name, there must be truth to it.

mpsprd··on Rhythm 0
I remember this being "exposed" in the Tate modern in London.

This piece of art is the one that made me acknowledge and appreciate modern art. It really makes you undestand the value of context and performance.

mpsprd··on Willingham sends Fables into the public domain
IANAL obviously, but nothing now stops me from selling T-shirts, figurines and lunchboxes of fable with my own drawings/designs. Any such sale is money not in DC pockets.
mpsprd··on Willingham sends Fables into the public domain
The point is to hurt DC financially in reprisal.

Also, characters from fable came from the public domain, so it's a logical conclusion from the point of view of the author.

mpsprd··on Willingham sends Fables into the public domain
>it cannot be resold

He covered it.

mpsprd··on Stable Audio: Fast Timing-Conditioned Latent Audio Diffusion
>where quality is not important, like in games

I don't believe that's a good example. Video game music is an important part of the gaming experience, but its often taken for granted or overlooked.

mpsprd··on Ask HN: What's your seniority, location and notice period?
In Canada its the same. I lived in France for a while and it was 2 months, it was quite the shock.
mpsprd··on How to make a synthetic diamond (2009)
I disagree. As someone who doesn't own jewelry, I must admit nothing blings like diamond.

Go to the London tower and look at the crown jewels. It's jaw dropping.

It's of course a way of displaying your wealth, but it also reflects and scatters light in an incredible way.

mpsprd··on Touch Pianist
Funnily enough, I found gymnopédie #1 harder to play, even if I actually already played on the piano. Its like if muscle memory of actual piano was fighting it.
mpsprd··on The Decomposition of Rotten Tomatoes
you sample bad reviews from users and read them. You can most of the time filter it out the classic noise:

-Pretentious watchers hating on summer blockbuster movies

-Political things and review bombs

About your specific example Steam comes to mind, they have a great review timeline feature that allows to filter out review bombs.

mpsprd··on The Decomposition of Rotten Tomatoes
Agreed, but you can infer a lot with it.

My favourite way of judging movie quality is checking what kind of movie goers hate it and why.

mpsprd··on A look inside a Sharia Courtroom
I'm absolutely not trying to say say its not messed up. I was trying to say that these (horrible) practices do not characterize Afghan culture itself as they are pervasive in the world. I don't think this is whataboutism.

Honestly re-reading myself I now think of many cultures where it was never an occurrence, so I don't really agree with myself anymore. Thank you for making me rethink it.

mpsprd··on A look inside a Sharia Courtroom
Pederasty was practiced in many cultures. It's indeed messed up but I wouldn't say it's peculiar to Afghanistan
mpsprd··on Glove80 Ergonomic Keyboard
Columnar patterns are painful to muscle memory.

I personally use an ergodox I built, and I will never type fast like I can on a staggered layout. I also had to fix a typing mistake (I typed c with my index on staggered, and it became 'b')

In the end it's the split that saved my wrists. I believe everyone should type on one, whatever the model.

mpsprd··on Confessions of a Netflix DVD Dead-Ender
You answered your own question at "it costs them money".

They cannot afford it, they are an eternal growth company. They will optimize their revenue until they attain total enshittification.

mpsprd··on The boiling frog of digital freedom
here in Canada with returnable bottles, you actually buy the bottle container with a cover, but if you return it they buy it back from you.
mpsprd··on The technical merits of Wayland are mostly irrelevant
It needed extra work to get copy paste working in vim. Since then I think nvim natively supports it.
mpsprd··on The technical merits of Wayland are mostly irrelevant
The last time I played with Wayland:

* It broke screen sharing things

* It removed X forwarding

* It made my copy-paste life more complicated

* It made steam ui ever slower

Were these points fixed? what is the current usability of Wayland on these fronts?

mpsprd··on E-bike industry blames consumers for fires to undermine right to repair laws
Companies fighting against right to repair is an ecological disaster.

I take pride in repairing everything at home, and god I hate how hard they try to stop me.

The hypocrisy of our societies that want us to consume "ecology products" and associated marketing infuriates me. Just stop buying things!

mpsprd··on Austin company unveils humanoid robot
Mu guesses:

* A lot of engineering in low skill labor infrastructure is already designed around humans

* More marketable to the mainstream

* Less intimidating than a giant steel arm for other workers

mpsprd··on It’s-a-no-longer me: Charles Martinet steps down as Mario’s voice
if I remember well, the documentary High Score produced by Netflix had a great section on how he got the part. He also voices the documentary.
